Axel is a city in the southwest Netherlands. It is located in the municipality of Terneuzen, Zeeland, about 31 km southeast of Vlissingen. Axel received city rights in 1213.

Overslag is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Terneuzen, and lies about 36 km southeast of Vlissingen. The village was first mentioned in 1542 as "ten Overslach", and means place where goods could be transferred. It was located where the canal from Axel and canal from the Belgian Wachtebeke were closed together. It is a border village which is cut in two by the Netherlands-Belgian border. In 1547, the Sassevaart was dug and Overslag become obsolete for the transfer of goods. The parish church is located on the Belgian side. During World War I, it was not possible to completely shut the border and the Wire of Death, a lethal electric fence, ran through the village.Overslag was a separate municipality until 1970, when it was merged with Axel.

Spui is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Terneuzen, and lies about 27 km southeast of Vlissingen. The village was first mentioned in 1549 as "ter Zouter Speye", and refers to a type of discharge lock.In 1941, the association building was converted into a Reformed Church. In 1974, it was no longer used, and has been converted in a Masonic lodge.

The Moerbeke Sugar Factory was a beet sugar factory in Moerbeke, Belgium. The factory was last part of Iscal Sugar, a competitor of Raffinerie Tirlemontoise. In 2008, the factory was shut down and later completely demolished.

It is sometimes unofficially called Moerbeke-Waas (Dutch pronunciation: [ˌmuːrbeːkə ˈʋaːs]) to distinguish between this place and Moerbeke in Geraardsbergen. The municipality comprises the town of Moerbeke proper, and part of the Dutch-Belgian village Koewacht. In 2021, Moerbeke had a total population of 6,619. The total area is 37.80 km².Moerbeke was known very well for its sugar refinery. It is thought to have been the hometown of William of Moerbeke, who as Bishop of Corinth produced a new translation into Latin of the works of Aristotle, including certain which had been rediscovered from Arab sources, in the late 13th century. Unique is the political situation: since 1847 the liberal party has an absolute majority. The current mayor is Robby De Caluwé. The previous mayor was Filip Marin. The aldermen are Pierre De Bock, Marc Fruytier, Thierry Walbrecht, Sarah Poppe and Rudy Van Megroot (all Open Vld). Wachtebeke (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈʋɑxtəbeːkə]) is a municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises the town of Wachtebeke proper, and a smaller town: Overslag. In 2021, Wachtebeke had a total population of 7.769. The total area is 34.53 km2.The current mayor of Wachtebeke (as of 2012) is Rudy van Cronenburg. The Langelede is a small canal and corresponding residential street in the town. The neighborhood is slowly migrating from a poor agricultural environment towards a higher middle-class residential area. In Wachtebeke lies the provincial park Puyenbroeck

Sluiskil is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Terneuzen, and lies about 27 km southeast of Vlissingen. The village was first mentioned in 1839 as Sluiskil, and means "exit canal of the sluice". The village is located on the Ghent–Terneuzen Canal where there used to be a trench to the Axelse Gat. Sluiskil is a canal village which developed along the Ghent-Terneuzen canal. Factories were constructed on the east side in the early 20th century. Between 1960 and 1968, the canal was widened and a part of the west side was demolished. Sluiskil was home to 109 people in 1840.The Catholic St Antonius of Padua Church was built between 1900 and 1901 to replace the monastery church of 1897 which burnt down in 1900. It is a single-aisled church with a ridge turret. It was modernised in 1962. In 2015, the Sluiskiltunnel opened as a replacement of the bridge over the canal. The bridge averaged 23 opening a day and used to cause large traffic jams.

Zelzate (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈzɛlzaːtə]) is a municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality only comprises the town of Zelzate proper. In 2021, Zelzate had a total population of 13,124. The total area is 13.71 km2.Zelzate is divided into two parts by the Ghent–Terneuzen Canal. There is a concrete drawbridge and a tunnel to connect the two sides. Zelzate is known for the nearby polluting industry, which makes it the village with the lowest air quality in the country. Recently ArcelorMittal Ghent (Sidmar) made a major investment which resulted in an emission decrease of 90%.
