Overslag is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Terneuzen, and lies about 36 km southeast of Vlissingen. The village was first mentioned in 1542 as "ten Overslach", and means place where goods could be transferred. It was located where the canal from Axel and canal from the Belgian Wachtebeke were closed together. It is a border village which is cut in two by the Netherlands-Belgian border. In 1547, the Sassevaart was dug and Overslag become obsolete for the transfer of goods. The parish church is located on the Belgian side. During World War I, it was not possible to completely shut the border and the Wire of Death, a lethal electric fence, ran through the village.Overslag was a separate municipality until 1970, when it was merged with Axel.

In 1927, part of the original municipality was already annexed to Ghent. On 1 January 1965, it was merged into Ghent.It is situated near the canal that connects the cities of Ghent and Terneuzen, which puts Mendonk in the middle of an industrial area.

Zelzate (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈzɛlzaːtə]) is a municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality only comprises the town of Zelzate proper. In 2021, Zelzate had a total population of 13,124. The total area is 13.71 km2.Zelzate is divided into two parts by the Ghent–Terneuzen Canal. There is a concrete drawbridge and a tunnel to connect the two sides. Zelzate is known for the nearby polluting industry, which makes it the village with the lowest air quality in the country. Recently ArcelorMittal Ghent (Sidmar) made a major investment which resulted in an emission decrease of 90%.

It is thought to have been the hometown of William of Moerbeke, who as Bishop of Corinth produced a new translation into Latin of the works of Aristotle, including certain which had been rediscovered from Arab sources, in the late 13th century. Unique is the political situation: since 1847 the liberal party has an absolute majority. The current mayor is Robby De Caluwé. The previous mayor was Filip Marin. The Moerbeke Sugar Factory was a beet sugar factory in Moerbeke, Belgium. The factory was last part of Iscal Sugar, a competitor of Raffinerie Tirlemontoise. In 2008, the factory was shut down and later completely demolished.
