The Harmelen train disaster, on 8 January 1962, was the worst railway accident in the history of the Netherlands. Harmelen, in the central Netherlands, is the location of a railway junction where a branch to Amsterdam leaves the Rotterdam to Utrecht line. It is common at high-speed junctions to avoid the use of diamond crossings wherever possible – instead a ladder crossing is employed where trains destined for the branch line cross over to the track normally employed for trains travelling in the opposite direction for a short distance before taking the branch line. The accident happened 18 months after the Woerden train accident, the derailment of a British furlough train nearby. Previously the Weesp train disaster of 1918 had been the worst railway disaster in the Netherlands.

Houtdijken is not a statistical entity, and the postal authorities have placed it under Kamerik. The hamlet was first mentioned in 1307 as In Hofdijc, and means "parcel of land on a dike". The name was later reinterpreted as hout (wood). Houtdijken has no place name signs. In 1840, it was home to 243 people. Nowadays it consists of about 20 houses including a retirement home with 12 apartments.

The Leidse Rijn (Dutch for "Leiden's Rhine") is a canal in the province of Utrecht, Netherlands. It was dug since the Middle Ages when the meandering old Rhine course silted up. The Leidse Rijn has a length of 13 km. Towns along the Leidse Rijn are De Meern and Harmelen. While still in Utrecht city the Leidse Rijn crosses the Merwede Canal and the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal. It is the continuation of the Kromme Rijn (Crooked Rhine) through the moat system of Utrecht. The canal ends in Harmelen. There it connects to the Oude Rijn, which eventually flows into the North Sea at Katwijk aan Zee. The canal gives its name to the Utrecht neighborhood of Leidsche Rijn.

The village used to be a separate municipality, until it merged with Woerden in 2001. Before the merger the municipality of Harmelen had about 8000 inhabitants.

Teckop is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It is a part of the municipality of Woerden, and lies about 6 km northeast of Woerden. Teckop was a separate municipality from 1817 to 1857, when it was merged with Kamerik.Teckop is not a statistical entity, and the postal authorities have placed it under Kamerik.The hamlet was first mentioned between 1280 and 1287 as teykincoep, and means "concession of Teyke (person)". Teckop used to have place name sign, however they have been removed. In 1840, it was home to 161 people. Nowadays, it consists of about 40 houses.

Kockengen is a village in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It is a part of the municipality of Stichtse Vecht, and lies about 11 km northeast of Woerden. The name of the village is a reference to Cockaigne, a medieval fictional land of plenty.Until 1989, Kockengen was a separate municipality. From then until 2011 it was part of the municipality of Breukelen.

Laag-Nieuwkoop is a hamlet in the Dutch municipality of Stichtse Vecht. Between 1815 and 1942, Laag-Nieuwkoop was a separate municipality, consisting of the village, the nearby hamlets of Gieltjesdorp, and Zuideinde (the south end of Portengen). The hamlet was first mentioned in the 14th century Nieucoop, and means "the lower new part of a concession". Laag-Nieuwkoop is not a statistical entity, and the postal authorities have placed it under Vleuten. The hamlet does not have place name signs. In 1840, it was home to 89 people. Nowadays, it consists of about 25 houses.

Kamerik-Houtdijken is a former municipality in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It existed from 1818 to 1857, after which it merged with 's-Gravesloot, Kamerik-Mijzijde, and Teckop, to form the new municipality of Kamerik.During that time, it had about 620 inhabitants, in three polders: Kamerik-Teylingens, Groot-Houtdijk, and Klein-Houtdijk. This included the village of Oud-Kamerik, the hamlet Houtdijken, and half of the village of Kamerik.

Portengen is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It is located in the municipality of Stichtse Vecht, 1 km (0.62 mi) northeast of Kockengen. Portengen was a separate municipality from 1818 to 1857, when it was merged with Breukelen-Nijenrode.The hamlet was first mentioned in 1217 as Britannien, and is a reference to Brittany, France. It started as a peat excavation colony during the 11th and 12th century. The hamlet of Portengensebrug is an enclave within Portengen. In 1840, Portengen was home to 55 people.
