Charmant Som is a mountain in the French department of Isère, rising to 1,867 metres (6,125 ft) in the Chartreuse Mountains in the Alps. It is made up of limestone, but its relief is less pronounced than that of the surrounding mountains, which is why it is covered with alpine meadows, the origin of its name. These have been occupied and tended by shepherds since the Middle Ages. They are accessible via a road built between the two world wars from the Col de Porte to 200 metres (660 ft) below the main summit. The road leads to two buildings serving as inn, chalet and cheese dairy. The mountain is part of the Chartreuse Regional Nature Park, a Natural area of ecological, faunal and floristic interest (ZNIEFF by its acronym in French) and a Natura 2000 zone. These protected areas are designed to preserve biodiversity. However, they are also ideal for hiking, speleology (which began to develop in the 1960s, followed by skiing in the late 1970s), cycling, climbing and paragliding.

Grande Chartreuse (French: [ɡʁɑ̃d ʃaʁtʁøz]) is the head monastery of the Carthusian religious order. It is located in the Chartreuse Mountains, north of the city of Grenoble, in the commune of Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse (Isère), France.

The Dauphiné (UK: , US: French: [dofi'ne]) is a former province in southeastern France, whose area roughly corresponded to that of the present departments of Isère, Drôme and Hautes-Alpes. The Dauphiné was originally the Dauphiné of Viennois. In the 12th century, the local ruler Count Guigues IV of Albon (c. 1095–1142) bore a dolphin on his coat of arms and was nicknamed le Dauphin (French for 'dolphin'). His descendants changed their title from Count of Albon to Dauphin of Viennois. The state took the name of Dauphiné. It became a state of the Holy Roman Empire in the 11th century. In 1349, the Dauphiné was transferred from the last non-royal Dauphin (who had great debts and no direct heir) to the future king of France, Charles V, through the purchase of lands. The terms of the transfer stipulated that the heir apparent of France would henceforth be called le Dauphin and included significant autonomy and tax exemption for the Dauphiné region, most of which it retained only until 1457, though it remained a province until the French Revolution. Dauphin of France remained the title of the eldest son of a king of France and the heir apparent to the French crown until 1830. The historical capital is Grenoble and the other main towns are Vienne, Valence, Montélimar, Gap and Romans-sur-Isère. The demonym for its inhabitants is Dauphinois.

Saint-Laurent-du-Pont (French pronunciation: [sɛ̃ loʁɑ̃ dy pɔ̃]) is a commune in the Isère department in southeastern France. It was the site of the Club Cinq-Sept fire, which killed 146, in 1970.

The canton of Chartreuse-Guiers is an administrative division of the Isère department, eastern France. It was created at the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015. Its seat is in Saint-Laurent-du-Pont.It consists of the following communes:

The Col de la Ruchère is a mountain pass located at 1,407 m above sea level, in the township of Saint-Christophe-sur-Guiers in the Chartreuse Mountains between the Riondettes meadow at La Ruchère and the Grande Chartreuse monastery. This pass is only accessible by foot: from the south, fully wooded, 2 hours 30 minutes walk from Correrie at the entrance of the silence zone of the monastery; from the north, overlooking a pasture, 1 hour 30 minutes walk from the hamlet of La Ruchère or from its northern winter sports resort area.

Parc Naturel Régional de la Chartreuse (Chartreuse Regional Nature Park) is a regional nature park located in the region Rhône-Alpes between Chambéry, Grenoble and Voiron, on the border of the departments of Isère and Savoie. It is based on the massif de la Chartreuse and covers an area of 76,700 hectares with a population of about 50,000. The park was established in 1995.

The Grand Som is a mountain of the Chartreuse Mountains in the French Prealps, in Isère, France. It has a long ridge, unevenly sharp, overlooking the Petit Som (1,772m), the Col de la Ruchère northwest and the Grande Chartreuse monastery below the cliffs. The summit has a cross and two relief tables. It lies in the Parc Naturel Régional de la Chartreuse.

Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse (French pronunciation: [sɛ̃ pjɛʁ də ʃaʁtʁøz]) is a commune in the Isère department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in southeastern France.It is located in the Chartreuse Mountains, to the north of the city of Grenoble. The Grande Chartreuse, the head monastery of the Carthusian order is located in Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse.

The Club Cinq-Sept fire was a major blaze at a nightclub just outside Saint-Laurent-du-Pont, Isère, France, on Sunday, 1 November 1970. The fire claimed the lives of 146 people, almost all of whom were aged between 17 and 30. The scale of the disaster shocked the country. Subsequent official enquiries revealed a catalogue of shortcomings, oversights and evasions with regard to fire safety at both local and département level. Criminal charges were brought against a number of people; some received suspended jail sentences.

La Grande Sure is a mountain in the French department of Isère, rising to an altitude of 1,920 meters in the Chartreuse mountain chain, in the Alps, overlooking the Pays Voironnais. Located on the western border of the mountain chain, it is composed of Fontanil limestone. It can be climbed from the eastern side via the Charmette mountain pass via the Grande Vache mountain pass, or from the Placette mountain pass via the western side, which is more strenuous and has a higher difficulty. This mountain is part of the Chartreuse Regional Nature Park as well as a natural zone of ecological, faunistic and floristic interest. The species of the chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) is particularly present in steep parts of the alpine tundra.

The Col de Porte (elevation 1,326 m (4,350 ft)) is a mountain pass situated in the Chartreuse Mountains in the Isère department of France, between Le Sappey-en-Chartreuse to the south and Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse to the north. It sits on the D512 between Grenoble and Chambéry, and prior to 1998 was often crossed in conjunction with the Col du Cucheron and the Col du Granier.To the east is Chamechaude, the highest summit in the Chartreuse Massif. There is a small ski resort situated near the col.
