Veľká Fatra

Ostredok (1,596 m above sea level) is the highest hill of the Great Fatra, at the same time in the National Park Veľká Fatra. It lies in the main ridge of the mountain. It has two peaks, the main southern (1,596 m above sea level) and a few meters lower north (1,593 m above sea level). The peaks are luminous, providing an undisturbed circular view. The slopes of Ostredok are smoothly modeled, steep, in winter there is a danger of avalanche dropping. The 49 km long Great-Frontier Highway is marked by the red tourist sign marked with a red tourist mark. [1] In Slovakia there are up to six hills called Ostredok. [2] [3]

Tlstá (meaning fat in Slovak) is a mountain in the Bralná Fatra part of the Greater Fatra Range, measuring 1,373.3 m (4,506 ft). It is located over the Turiec Valley, rising steeply nearly 1,000 m (3,300 ft) above the valley bottom. It has rugged slopes with many rock spires and rock terraces under the grass-covered summit. With its well-preserved forests, rare plants and many karst caves in the massif, the mountain and its surrounding area were declared a National Nature Reserve in 1981, covering an area of 30.66 km2 (11.84 sq mi). Together with the opposite Ostrá Mountain and Gader Valley beneath them, they create one of the most valuable and picturesque parts of the Greater Fatra Range.

Borišov is a mountain in the Greater Fatra Range in Slovakia measuring 1,508.5 m (4,949.1 ft). Its summit is deforested, covered in grass. On the southern side there is one of the largest avalanche slopes in Slovakia. The Borišov National Nature Reserve protects a well-preserved primeval mountain forest on the northern side of the mountain. In the saddle between Borišov and Ploská is the Chata pod Borišovom (transl. Chalet under Borišov), open year-round.

Ploská is a mountain in the Hôlna Fatra part of the Greater Fatra Range in Slovakia measuring 1,532.1 metres (5,026.6 ft). It lies on the main ridge, to South it continues to Ostredok and Krížna mountains, to the North it divides into the lower western Turiec Ridge (Slovak: Turčianský hrebeň) and higher eastern Liptov Ridge (Slovak: Liptovský hrebeň). It is unique by its large flat grass covered summit, the slopes are dangerous in winter because of frequent avalanches which have claimed many lives.

Turecká (Hungarian: Török) is a village and municipality in Banská Bystrica District in the Banská Bystrica Region of central Slovakia.

Staré Hory (Hungarian: Óhegy) is a village in the Banská Bystrica Region in Central Slovakia. It is situated in the Staré Hory Mountains, between the Veľká Fatra and Low Tatra mountain ranges. As of the end of 2019, the village had a population of 555. The copper deposits in the vicinity of the village were exploited as early as 2000–1700 BC. The stone tools used by prehistoric miners have been found both in Staré Hory and the nearby village of Špania Dolina. However, the name of the village was mentioned for the first time in 1536. In the 16th century, a smelting plant was built there. After the mining industry declined, the main economic activity shifted from the production of copper and charcoal to making bobbin lace. Merchants from Staré Hory were selling bobbin lace all over Austria-Hungary. A natural spring with a statue of Virgin Mary near Staré Hory is a traditional place of pilgrimage. There is also a Baroque church, originally built in the 15th century, situated in the village. This church dons the status of a minor basilica as classified by the Roman Catholic Church, the Basilica of the Visitation.

Dolný Harmanec (German: Klein Hermans, Unter Hermanetz; Hungarian: Alsóhermánd) is a village and municipality of the Banská Bystrica District in the Banská Bystrica Region of Slovakia. It has a population of 204 people.

Harmanecká Cave or Harmanec Cave (Slovak: Harmanecká jaskyňa, Hungarian: Hermándi barlang) is a stalactite cave in Central Slovakia. It is located on the northern side of the Kotolnica massif in the Staré Hory and Kremnica mountain ranges and south of the Veľká Fatra mountains. The closest villages are Harmanec and Dolný Harmanec; Banská Bystrica is around 16 km south east of the cave. It is formed from Middle Triassic dark-grey Gutenstein limestone with an estimated age of 220 million years. The entrance to the cave is situated at an altitude of 821 m and 260 m above the bottom of the Harmanec valley.

Harmanec (Hungarian: Hermánd) is a village and municipality in Banská Bystrica District in the Banská Bystrica Region of central Slovakia.

Upper Hungary is the usual English translation of Felvidék (literally: "Upland"), the Hungarian term for the area that was historically the northern part of the Kingdom of Hungary, now mostly present-day Slovakia. The region has also been called Felső-Magyarország (literally: "Upper Hungary"; Slovak: Horné Uhorsko). During the Habsburg–Ottoman wars, Upper Hungary meant only the northeastern parts of the Hungarian Kingdom. The northwestern regions (present-day western and central Slovakia) belonged to Lower Hungary. Sometime during the 18th or 19th century, Upper Hungary began to imply the whole northern regions of the kingdom. The population of Upper Hungary was mixed and mainly consisted of Slovaks, Hungarians, Germans, Ashkenazi Jews and Ruthenians. The first complex demographic data are from the 18th century, in which Slovaks constituted the majority population in Upper Hungary. Slovaks called this territory "Slovensko" (Slovakia), which term appears in written documents from the 15th century, but it was not precisely defined and the region inhabited by Slovaks held no distinct legal, constitutional, or political status within Upper Hungary.
