Tarnów Voivodeship

Tarnów (Polish pronunciation: [ˈtarnuf] ) is a city in southeastern Poland with 105,922 inhabitants and a metropolitan area population of 269,000 inhabitants. The city is situated in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship since 1999. From 1975 to 1998, it was the capital of the Tarnów Voivodeship. It is a major rail junction, located on the strategic east–west connection from Lviv to Kraków, and two additional lines, one of which links the city with the Slovak border. Tarnów is known for its traditional Polish architecture, which was influenced by foreign cultures and foreigners that once lived in the area, most notably Jews, Germans and Austrians. The Old Town, featuring 16th century tenements, houses and defensive walls, has been preserved. Tarnów is also the warmest city of Poland, with the highest long-term mean annual temperature in the whole country.Companies headquartered in the city include Poland's largest chemical industry company Grupa Azoty and defence industry company ZMT. The city is currently subdivided into 16 districts and is a member of the Association of Polish Cities (Związek Miast Polskich).

The Cathedral Basilica of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Polish: Bazylika katedralna Narodzenia Najświętszej Maryi Panny w Tarnowie ) also called Tarnów Cathedral is a religious building belonging to the Catholic Church and is located in the city of Tarnów in the European country of Poland.It is a Gothic church, rebuilt in later periods. The building has three naves with an elongated chancel and west tower added that one rises 72 meters. It is a cathedral dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary from 1783 and Basilica since 1972. In the oldest part of the church was built at the current location of the city in 1330. It was visited by Pope John Paul II in 1987.

The Diocese of Tarnów (Latin: Dioecesis Tarnoviensis) is a Latin diocese of the Catholic Church in Poland. According to Church statistics, it is the most religious diocese in Poland, with 72.5% weekly Mass attendance.

New Synagogue (Polish: Nowa Synagoga, Nowa Synagoga w Tarnowie) was the largest synagogue in Tarnów, Poland. It was built from 1865 to 1908, with the long period of construction due to lack of funds. The synagogue was set on fire by the Nazis in November 1939. The fire lasted three days but the building did not collapse; it was blown up instead.

State Higher Vocational School in Tarnów (Państwowa Wyższa Szkoła Zawodowa w Tarnowie) – a public, vocational type university, created on the basis of the Council of Ministers of 19 May 1998 as the first university in Poland of a new type of vocational educating undergraduate and engineering. The university operates under the Act of 26 June 1997 on higher vocational schools (Ustawa z dnia 26 czerwca 1997 roku o wyższych szkołach zawodowych), the statute and other regulations issued on its basis.

The Tarnów train station bombing was a deadly bombing carried out by a German saboteur two days before the start of World War II in Europe. The attack took place in the city of Tarnów in Poland of the interwar period, ahead of the joint invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. The time bomb planted by the secret agent exploded inside the station on the night of 28 August 1939, killing 20 people and wounding 35 others.The population of Tarnów in 1939 was around 40,000. The busy train station of Tarnów Główny (Tarnów Central) was located on the railway line connecting two major agglomerations in southern Poland, Kraków to the west and Lwów to the east. Trains passed through Tarnów carrying thousands of travelers. The threat of imminent conflict with Germany added to the awaiting crowd many army reserve soldiers ordered to report to their units, as the international situation worsened day by day. The dense traffic was halted abruptly at 11:18 p.m., when a time bomb left by a German saboteur, Anton Guzy, exploded in the waiting hall. Twenty people at the station died instantly. It has been argued by commentators that the world war had just began.

Tarnów County (Polish: powiat tarnowski) is a unit of territorial administration and local government (powiat) in Lesser Poland Voivodeship, southern Poland. It came into being on January 1, 1999, as a result of the Polish local government reforms passed in 1998. Its administrative seat is the city of Tarnów, although the city is not part of the county (it constitutes a separate city county). The county contains seven towns: Tuchów, 16 km (10 mi) south of Tarnów, Żabno, 14 km (9 mi) north-west of Tarnów, Wojnicz, 15 km (9 mi) south-west of Tarnów, Radłów, 13 km (8 mi) north-west of Tarnów, Ryglice, 20 km (12 mi) south-east of Tarnów, Ciężkowice, 26 km (16 mi) south of Tarnów, and Zakliczyn, 25 km (16 mi) south-west of Tarnów. The county covers an area of 1,413.44 square kilometres (545.7 sq mi). As of 2006 its total population was 193,549, out of which the population of Tuchów was 6,501, that of Żabno 4,271, that of Wojnicz 3,404, that of Ryglice 2,784, that of Ciężkowice 2,378, that of Zakliczyn 1,556, and the rural population was 176,059 (including approximately 2,800 for the population of Radłów, which became a town in 2010).

Gmina Tarnów is a rural gmina (administrative district) in Tarnów County, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, in southern Poland. Its seat is the city of Tarnów, although the city is not part of the territory of the gmina. The gmina covers an area of 82.81 square kilometres (32.0 sq mi), and as of 2006 its total population is 23,060.

Saint Martin's Peak (Polish: Góra Świętego Marcina) (384 m above sea level) is a hill located southeast of the center of Tarnów, Poland, partly inside the city's administrative boundaries. It forms the northern edge of the threshold of the Carpathian foothills.

Tarnowiec [tarˈnɔvjɛt͡s] is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Tarnów, within Tarnów County, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, in southern Poland. It lies approximately 6 kilometres (4 mi) south of Tarnów and 76 km (47 mi) east of the regional capital Kraków.The village has an approximate population of 3,500.
