Herz-Jesu-Kirche

St. Leonhard (German: [saŋkt ˈleːonhaʁt], in Germany [z-]) is the 2nd district of the Austrian city of Graz. It is located in the east of the city along the Leonhardbach and stretches south to the St. Peter City Cemetery. It borders the district of Geidorf to the north, Ries and Waltendorf to the east, Jakomini to the south and Innere Stadt to the west. The postal codes of Ries are 8010 and 8016. Within the district are situated the catholic churches of St. Leonhard (first mentioned in 1361) and Herz Jesu (Jesus heart - finished 1887), as well as the Protestant church Heilandskirche.

The University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, also known as Kunstuniversität Graz (KUG) is an Austrian university. Its roots can be traced back to the music school of the Akademischer Musikverein founded in 1816, making it the oldest university of music in Austria.

The Medical University of Graz (Med Uni Graz) is a medical university in Austria that has been in existence since January 1, 2004, and has been a part of the Karl-Franzens University of Graz as a medical faculty since 1863.

The Institute for Applied Information Processing and Communications (IAIK) is part of the Faculty of Computer Science and Biomedical Engineering at the Graz University of Technology (TU Graz). IAIK is concerned with aspects of computer security and information security. Current focal points are set on design of new cryptographic algorithms, implementation of cryptographic algorithms and protocols in hardware as well as in software, network security, e-Government, and trusted computing. IAIK conducts applied research into these areas, fostering a holistic view of the aspects of computer and information security. Teaching activities closely follow the latest developments in IAIK’s research fields. The activities of IAIK are led by Stefan Mangard after Reinhard Posch abdicated in 2019. The Akademisches Gymnasium is a coeducational gymnasium grammar school located in Graz, Styria, Austria. Founded in 1573 by Charles II, Archduke of Austria, it is the oldest secondary school in Graz.

The Mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II in Graz was constructed beginning in 1614 under the patronage of Archduke Ferdinand II of Habsburg, who later became Holy Roman Emperor. It was intended to serve as a dynastic burial site and as a symbolic monument associated with the Catholic Counter Reformation in Inner Austria. During Ferdinand II’s reign, the Habsburg monarchy pursued policies that strengthened Catholic influence following the territorial and religious advances made by Protestantism in the region. In this context, the mausoleum was conceived as both a family crypt and a representation of religious and dynastic authority. According to scholarly research, Ferdinand II decided in 1614 to establish a burial site in Graz that would reflect both ecclesiastical and dynastic significance. He entrusted the planning and construction to his Italian court artist, Giovanni Pietro de Pomis. The project involved architects and sculptors over several decades and included elaborate Baroque decoration. The completed structure has been described by scholars as a "triumphal monument of Catholicism" and a "symbol of the Counter Reformation" in Inner Austria, reflecting its historical and religious significance during that period.
