East Winch Common

East Winch is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. The village is located 4.9 miles (7.9 km) south-east of King's Lynn and 34 miles (55 km) west of Norwich.

East Winch railway station was at East Winch, Norfolk, England on the line between King's Lynn and Swaffham. It closed in 1968. The signal box from the station lay derelict until it was later salvaged by the Mid-Norfolk Railway for use at Thuxton level crossing where it has since been restored and in working use from 2010 onwards.

Freebridge Lynn Rural District was a rural district in Norfolk, England from 1894 to 1974.It was formed under the Local Government Act 1894 based on the Freebridge Lynn rural sanitary district, and was named after the Freebridge Lynn hundred. It covered an area to the east of King's Lynn. It was reduced somewhat in 1935 when under a County Review Order, the civil parishes of Gaywood and North Lynn became part of the borough of King's Lynn. In 1974, the district was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972, and became part of the West Norfolk district.

Docking Lynn Rural District was a rural district in Norfolk, England from 1894 to 1974.It was formed under the Local Government Act 1894 based on the Docking rural sanitary district. It covered an area south and east of Hunstanton. The only changes to its boundaries during its 80 years of existence were caused by a series of expansions of Hunstanton Urban District (1902, 1925 & 1928). In 1974, the district was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972, and became part of the West Norfolk district.

West Bilney is a village and former civil parish on the A47 road, 32 miles (51 km) west of Norwich, now in the parish of East Winch, in the King's Lynn and West Norfolk district, in the county of Norfolk, England. In 1931 the parish had a population of 188. Its church is dedicated to St Cecilia.

Ashwicken is a small village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Leziate, in the King's Lynn and West Norfolk district, in the county of Norfolk, England. The village sits on the B1145 King's Lynn to Mundesley road around 5 miles (8.0 km) east of King's Lynn. In 1931 the parish had a population of 117. On 1 April 1935 the parish was abolished and merged with Leziate.The village name means 'At the specialised-farm', with the later addition of 'ash-tree' or a personal name.Ashwicken is the site of a shrunken medieval village, one of around 200 lost settlements in Norfolk. The remains of the village were visible as earthworks near to Ashwicken Hall but were partly destroyed by ploughing in the 1990s. The hall was surrounded by a medieval moat which was filled in during the 19th century.The parish church, which is dedicated to All Saints, dates from the medieval period. It was restored during the 19th century and is a Grade II* listed building.

Pentney Priory was an Augustinian priory at Pentney in the district of King's Lynn and West Norfolk, Norfolk, England. The ruins of the priory, mostly comprising the flint-built gatehouse, are Grade I listed.The Priory was founded c.1130 by Robert de Vaux and dedicated to the Holy Trinity, Blessed Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene. In 1468 Walter Hart, Bishop of Norwich, united Pentney with Wormegay Priory with the consent of both establishments, Wormgay becoming a cell of Pentney. Pentney Priory was finally dissolved in 1537 as part of the Dissolution of the Monasteries under King Henry VIII. Prior Codde, prior at the time, was awarded a pension of £24 and appointed warden of the Hospital of St Giles, Norwich.The property was granted to Thomas Manners, 1st Earl of Rutland in 1538/9 and ultimately became incorporated into Abbey Farm, which now occupies the site. Stone from the Priory has been used in Abbey Farm and its outbuildings on the site, as well as other buildings in the village of Pentney. In 2012 English Heritage granted £200,000 for emergency repairs to the crumbling masonry.

Pentney is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk, located about 8 miles (13 km) south east of King's Lynn placing it about halfway between King's Lynn and Swaffham on the A47 road. It covers an area of 10.39 km2 (4.01 sq mi) and had a population of 387 in 184 households at the 2001 census, increasing to 544 at the 2011 Census. For the purposes of local government, it falls within the district of King's Lynn and West Norfolk. It is in the valley of the River Nar, a tributary of the River Great Ouse. The age of the village is unknown, but it dates at least to the 3rd or 4th centuries CE, from which time there is evidence of a Romano-British local pottery industry. A Roman road and settlement in Pentney ran close to the river Nar The name suggests that Pentney was at one time an island: one theory for the etymology is Penta's / Penda's Island, from the Anglo-Saxon Pendan-ig, the ig being equivalent to Old Norse ey = island (Pentney is on drained waterlands).

Bilney railway station was located on the line between East Winch and Narborough and Pentney. It served the village of West Bilney, and closed in 1866.

Leziate, Sugar and Derby Fens is an 87.9-hectare (217-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest east of King's Lynn in Norfolk.These fens have extensive heaths and areas of wet acidic grassland, and there are smaller areas of damp woodland and species-rich calcareous grassland. There are many ant-hills on Derby Fen.There is public access to the fens, which are in three separate areas.

Blackborough Priory was a Benedictine monastic house in Norfolk, England, about 5 miles or 8 km south east of King's Lynn. The Ordnance Survey map shows the remains of fishponds nearby, which may have been for the use of the monastery.

Bawsey is a 2.6-hectare (6.4-acre) geological Site of Special Scientific Interest east of Kings' Lynn in Norfolk. It is a Geological Conservation Review site.This site has Quaternary till, unsorted glacial sediments, with a depth of up to five metres. It is separated from the main East Anglian till sheet, and it is the type site for the Bawsey Calcareous Till.The site is private land with no public access.
