The Mississippi State Hospital (MSH) is a psychiatric facility operated by the Mississippi Department of Mental Health. It is located in the unincorporated community of Whitfield, Rankin County, Mississippi, along Mississippi Highway 468. The 350-acre (140 ha) campus is 15 miles (24 km) southeast of Jackson, between Jackson and Brandon. Historically many people referred to the center as "Whitfield," after the community in which it is located.

The Central Mississippi Correctional Facility (CMCF) is a Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) prison for men and women located in an unincorporated area in Rankin County, Mississippi, United States, between the cities of Pearl and Brandon. The 171-acre (69 ha) prison was, for a period of time, the only state prison to hold female prisoners in Mississippi, in addition to minimum and medium security male offenders. It operates as the female death row of the state.The prison is in proximity to the state capital of Jackson.The prison houses the Receiving and Classification Unit (R&C), where most prisoners entering the MDOC system are held before going to their permanent unit assignments. Most male inmates who are sentenced to MDOC by the courts or who are returned to MDOC as parole violators, probation violators, intensive supervision program (ISP) violators, earned release supervision (ERS) violators, and suspension violators are placed at R&C. All women inmates who are sentenced to MDOC by the courts or who are returned to MDOC as parole violators, probation violators, ISP violators, ERS violators, and suspension violators are placed in 1A or 2B at CMCF. Male death row inmates do not go to CMCF; they are transferred from county jails and immediately go to the Mississippi State Penitentiary, the location of the male death row.MDOC states that CMCF was "designed to provide aesthetics along with security."

Greenfield (also Green) is an unincorporated community in Rankin County, Mississippi, United States.The settlement is named for S. Green, an early settler. Greenfield had a post office from 1891 to 1935.An early railway line, owned by the Jackson & Brandon Railroad & Bridge Company, was built through Greenfield in the 1830s. The line is currently owned by the Kansas City Southern Railway.

WFQY is a classic hip-hop radio station, licensed to Brandon, Mississippi and serving the Jackson, Mississippi area. From July 2019 to June 2020, WFQY has been simulcasting WJMF-LP (87-7 The Bridge). The station began as WRKN in the late 1960s as a country station. Longtime owners were Roy and June Harris. For a short time the station had a 1950s-based oldies format and also had a country gospel format for while. In later years it simulcast its sister station WRJH 97.7 FM with a Southern Gospel format. After WRJH was sold, WRKN AM continued to operate with a Southern Gospel format. After the retirement of the owner the station emerged as an affiliate of the "Real Country" network with classic country with call letters WZQK. On May 19, 2008, WZQK (Real Country 970) switched from classic country to all-sports. And the station's call letters became WJFN. WJFN also operates a 99-watt low-power translator at 99.1 FM—W256BL—located in Jackson, but is licensed to Ridgeland, Mississippi. On April 5, 2012, WJFN changed its call letters to WFQY and on April 20, 2012, WFQY changed its format to classic hip hop, branded as BDay 99-1. In July 2019 (after brief period of silence), WFQY resumed broadcasting, but was actually simulcasting WJMF-LP. In June 2020, classic hip-hop returned to WFQY.

The Pearl High School shooting was a school shooting that occurred on October 1, 1997 at Pearl High School in Pearl, Mississippi, United States. The gunman, 16-year-old 11th grade student Luke Woodham (born February 5, 1981), killed two students and injured seven others at the school after killing his mother at their home earlier that morning.

WJNT (1180 AM) is a radio station licensed to Pearl, Mississippi. WJNT is currently owned by Alpha Media through licensee Alpha Media Licensee LLC and its sister stations are WJMI, WKXI-FM, WOAD, WRKS, and WJQS. All six stations have shared studios which are located in Ridgeland, a suburb of Jackson, while the transmitter tower for WJNT is located in Pearl. WJNT broadcasts a news/talk format with mostly syndicated talk shows such as Brian Kilmeade, Mark Levin and Laura Ingraham. WJNT operates at 50,000 watts during the day, 10,000 watts during critical hours and 500 watts at night.

In addition to Brandon, the district serves most of Rankin County, including the communities of Florence, Flowood, Pelahatchie, Puckett, Richland, Sandhill, and Star.
