Green Island, New Zealand

The Diocese of Dunedin is one of the thirteen dioceses and hui amorangi (Māori bishoprics) of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia. The diocese covers the same area as the provinces of Otago and Southland in the South Island of New Zealand. Area 65,990 km2, population 272,541 (2001). Anglicans are traditionally the third largest religious group in Otago and Southland after Presbyterians and Roman Catholics. Description of arms: Gules between a cross saltire argent, four starts argent on the fess point a Bible. In 1814 the Gospel first preached in Aotearoa at Oihi, Northland by Anglican missionary Samuel Marsden, in 1841George Selwyn consecrated and appointed Bishop of New Zealand (including Polynesia and Melanesia). In 1843 the first Anglican missionaries to come to Southland and Otago were Tamihana Te Rauparaha and Matene Te Whiwhi. In 1852 Rev. John Fenton arrives in Dunedin; he was the first Anglican priest to settle south of Lyttleton. In 1856 when the Diocese of New Zealand was subdivided, Southland and Otago were included in the Diocese of Christchurch. In 1866 Henry Lascelles Jenner selected and ordained by the Archbishop of Canterbury “into the office of a Bishop of the United Church of England and Ireland in the colony of New Zealand”, with the intention that he be Bishop of Dunedin. In 1869 the Diocese of Dunedin formed from the Diocese of Christchurch. The first meeting of Dunedin's synod rejected Jenner's claim to the See 1871 Samuel Nevill enthroned as 1st bishop of Dunedin. The Bishop of Dunedin's cathedra is at St. Paul's Cathedral, Dunedin. The diocese has a total of 33 parishes. The adaption of "Local Shared Ministry" has been a strategy by which local people are ordained to serve in a parish which cannot afford to support full-time professional clergy. The diocese includes Anglo-Catholic, broad and Evangelical parishes.

On 8 August 1979, a major landslip occurred in the Dunedin, New Zealand suburb of Abbotsford. It was the largest landslide in a built-up area in New Zealand's history, resulting in the destruction of 69 houses – around one sixth of the suburb – but no fatalities.

Abbotsford is a suburb of the New Zealand city of Dunedin. It is located to the west of the city centre.It is Immediately to the north of Green Island, and separated from it by State Highway 1 and South Island Main Trunk Railway (opened to Green Island in 1874). Abbotsford is an entirely residential suburb with virtually no retail or service sector of its own – for these it relies on Green Island.

Sunnyvale Park is a multi-use sports venue in Dunedin, New Zealand. It is located immediately to the west of Abbotsford in Sunnyvale, near Green Island, and is bounded by Main South Road, Dunedin Southern Motorway and Abbot's Creek, a tributary of the Kaikorai Stream.The park is currently used primarily for football (soccer), being a former home ground for Otago United in the New Zealand Football Championship, as well as local club side Green Island. Sunnyvale Park has also been a first-class cricket venue.

Burnside is a mainly industrial suburb of the New Zealand city of Dunedin. It is located at the mouth of a long valley, the Kaikorai Valley, through which flows the Kaikorai Stream. This valley stretches to the northeast for 3.5 kilometres (2.2 mi). Burnside is 5.5 kilometres (3.4 mi) to the southwest of the city centre, close to eastern end of the much larger suburb, Green Island. Other suburbs located nearby include Concord, immediately to the southeast and Kenmure further up Kaikorai Valley. Burnside is separated from the central urban area of Dunedin by the large ridge which surrounds the city's heart. This ridge is part of the crater wall of the long-extinct Dunedin Volcano. The ridge lies immediately to the east of Burnside, with the main pass over it, the saddle of Lookout Point, lying 0.8 kilometres (0.50 mi) to the east.

Concord is a small residential suburb of the New Zealand city of Dunedin. It is southwest of the city centre. It lay on State Highway 1 until the construction of the Dunedin Southern Motorway in the 1990s, but is now bypassed by traffic from central Dunedin. The former Main South Road is now largely reduced to a narrow one-way street leading down from Lookout Point, virtually a long slip-road from the start of the motorway, though it is still two-way through Concord itself, and serves (along with Stevenson Road, which it becomes) as an important link road to Corstorphine and Calton Hill.

Blackhead is a promontory on the coast of Otago, New Zealand. It lies within the city limits of Dunedin, some 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) southwest of the city centre. The promontory extends some 500 metres into the ocean, and rises to a height of a little over 100 metres (330 ft). Māori names for Blackhead include Te Wai o Tinarau (the waters of Tinarau) and Makereatu (to leave a seed).The area of coast to the east of Blackhead is rugged and steep, with many cliff prominences. The tourist attraction of Tunnel Beach lies in this area, 3 km from Blackhead. To the west, the coast is more low-lying with beaches. The community of Waldronville is located here, some 1500 metres from Blackhead, close to the mouth of the Kaikorai Stream. A beach under the shadow of the quarry, Blackhead Beach, is a popular local surfing spot.Geologically, Blackhead formed around a peripheral vent of the Dunedin Volcano about 10 mya, the eroded and long-extinct remains of which form the ridge of hills surrounding Otago Harbour. Notable features of Blackhead relating to its origins include basalt columns, similar to those located at Second Beach, several kilometres to the east. Some of these are readily viewed by the public, such as the series of columns at the western end, which are accessible from Waldronville and Blackhead Beaches. Many of the more spectacular formations, such as the "Roman Baths" and "The Docks" are much harder and more hazardous to access, as they lie on the seaward side of the outcrop. Another feature which is equally difficult to access is Caversham Cavern, one of the largest sea caves on the Otago coast.

Fairfield is a suburb of Dunedin, New Zealand. Fairfield lies in rolling hill country, close to the slopes of Saddle Hill and Scroggs Hill. The name Fairfield was originally given as a descriptive name by early European settler William Martin to his farm property, located close to where the town now stands.Under the 1989 local government reforms, the city of Dunedin and its surrounding region was grouped into a territorial authority called Dunedin City. Under this system, Fairfield is officially an outer suburb within this territorial authority. Until 2000, Fairfield was located on State Highway 1, but is now on a bypass of the Dunedin Southern Motorway. Fairfield is situated about 11 km (7 mi) west-southwest of the Octagon, Dunedin's city centre. As of the 2013 New Zealand census (delayed from 2011 due to the 2011 Christchurch earthquake), Fairfield had a population of 2,379 – an increase of 5.0% from the population of 2,275 in the 2006 census. Fairfield accounts for 2.0% of the total Dunedin City territorial authority population.The local primary school is Fairfield School.

Tunnel Beach is a locality 7.5 kilometres (4.7 mi) southwest of the city centre of Dunedin, New Zealand. Located just south of St Clair, Tunnel Beach has sea-carved sandstone cliffs, rock arches and caves. Beyond the beauty of the rugged sandstone cliffs, its claim to fame is the tunnel down to the beach that a local politician, John Cargill, son of Captain William Cargill, had commissioned for his family in the 1870s. Local legend says that one or more of Cargill's daughters drowned while swimming at the beach, but there is no truth to this story.The tunnel itself is rough-hewn, and still shows the marks of the hand working which created it. Originally a simple slope, concrete steps were added when it was opened to the public in 1983. Access to the beach is via the DOC Reserve, and is open year round. The track is a popular walking excursion. It descends from 150 metres (490 ft) above sea level at its start, a short distance off Blackhead Road, winding for some 1200 metres to the top of the tunnel close to a natural sea arch. The tunnel descends 72 steps to the beach, and is dimly naturally lit. Note that the path down is steep and can be very slippery following wet weather.

Waldronville is a coastal settlement on the Pacific Ocean coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Established in the 1950s as a commuter settlement, it is located 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) to the southwest of Dunedin city centre, and lies within the city's limits. Waldronville was developed by Bill Waldron, when he purchased the McCraws farm in the early 1950s, initially for 200 houses. In the mid-1970s, two other streets were added to the southwest of the settlement. In the mid-1990s, Friendship Drive and Wavy Knowes developments were added to the northeast. The township of Brighton lies 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) to the southwest of Waldronville; the tiny settlement of Westwood lies halfway between Brighton and Waldronville. Waldronville is located close to the Kaikorai Lagoon, an expanse of water at the mouth of the Kaikorai Stream protected from the ocean by a sandbar which stretches inland almost as far as the Dunedin suburb of Green Island, 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) to the north. The lagoon is part of a research project aimed at establishing a national estuarine monitoring protocol. The actual island which shares the suburb's name lies 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) offshore to the south of Waldronville. The Island Park Recreation Reserve is a protected area between the village and coast. The rocky outcrop of Blackhead is located to the east of Waldronville. A major quarry is located at Blackhead, mining basalt for road metal. There are hexagonal basalt columns at Blackhead, similar to those further to the east at Second Beach. Many of Waldronville's streets are named after World War II-era aircraft. The settlement is connected to Brighton and Taieri Mouth to the southwest via a coastal road; in the other direction the road stretches to Green Island. A narrow rural road runs past the quarry and on past Tunnel Beach, connecting with Dunedin's main suburban street system at Corstorphine. Green Park Cemetery, one of Dunedin's main cemeteries, is located close to Waldronville (at 45°55′40″S 170°23′10″E). Dunedin's only permanent motor racing circuit, Beachlands Speedway, is located close to the southern end of Waldronville.

Island Park Recreation Reserve is a coastal reserve in Waldronville, just to the southwest of Dunedin, New Zealand. The Kaikorai Stream and Westwood Recreation Reserve lie to the west. The reserve was established in 1977, coming into effect in 1978.

Fairfield School is a Primary and Intermediate school in Dunedin, New Zealand. The school was established during the late 19th century in the suburb of Fairfield by William Martin. It is situated on Sickels Street near the Dunedin Southern Motorway. The school has restricted enrolment to a limited geographical zone to reduce class sizes.
