First Avenue is a station on Pittsburgh Regional Transit's light rail network. The station is part of the light rail's Downtown Pittsburgh free zone, and passengers embarking here may travel for free to any of the other stations within the zone (Steel Plaza, Wood Street, Gateway, North Side and Allegheny). The station was a new addition to the light rail system in 2001, located in the PNC Firstside Complex, just before the tracks dip into the subway tunnel. It was opened on November 16, 2001 to provide better access to the southern quarter of downtown, which includes city and state government offices, major office buildings such as Oxford Centre and the Grant Building, downtown educational facilities such as Point Park University, Duquesne University and the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, and the many smaller office structures that mark this area of the Golden Triangle. It cost $6.7 million to construct.

Allegheny County Office Building located at Ross Street and Forbes Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was built from 1929 to 1931. It was added to the List of Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation Historic Landmarks in 2002.

The former Jones and Laughlin building is located at 200 Ross Street in the Downtown neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Built in 1907 in the Jacobean Revival architectural style, the building served as the headquarters of the Jones and Laughlin Steel Company from its construction until 1952 and currently holds offices for various governmental agencies in the City of Pittsburgh. It was designated a City of Pittsburgh Historic Landmark in 2020 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2021.

The Try Street Terminal (now "Terminal 21 Apartments", a luxury loft-style apartment building) in the Central Business District of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is former 1921 freight terminal and warehouse designed in the "commercial utilitarian" style. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.In 2011, the building and its streetscape were featured in the music video Black and Yellow.

The Allegheny County Courthouse in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is part of a complex (along with the old Allegheny County Jail) designed by H. H. Richardson. The buildings are considered among the finest examples of the Romanesque Revival style for which Richardson is well known. The complex is bordered by wide thoroughfares named for city founders James Ross (Ross Street), John Forbes (Forbes Avenue) and James Grant (Grant Street). The current building, completed in 1888, was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976. Richardson later referred to it as his "great achievement".

Greater Pittsburgh is a populous region centered around its largest city and economic hub, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The region encompasses Pittsburgh's urban core county, Allegheny, and six adjacent Pennsylvania counties: Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Washington, and Westmoreland in Western Pennsylvania, which constitutes the Pittsburgh, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area MSA as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau. As of the 2020 census, the Greater Pittsburgh region had a population of over 2.37 million people. Roughly one-fifth of the entire population of Pennsylvania resides within the region. The core city, Pittsburgh, has a population of 302,971, making it the second-largest city in the state. Over half of the region's population resides within Allegheny County, which has a population of 1.24 million and is the second-largest county in the state.

The old Allegheny County Jail in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is part of a complex (along with the Allegheny County Courthouse) designed by H. H. Richardson. The buildings are considered among the finest examples of the Romanesque Revival style for which Richardson is well known. The jail was built by the Norcross Brothers between 1884 and 1886 (the year of Richardson's death), and the courthouse was finished in 1888 under the supervision of Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge. The two structures are linked across Ross Street by a "Bridge of Sighs" (so called for its similarity to the famous bridge in Venice, Italy). Additions were made 1903–1905 by Frederick J. Osterling. In 1892, anarchist Alexander Berkman was held here awaiting trial for the attempted murder of industrialist H. C. Frick. In 1902, condemned brothers Jack and Ed Biddle escaped from the jail with the aid of the warden's wife. (The 1984 film Mrs. Soffel, based on the incident, includes shots of the jail exterior.) The jail and courthouse were added to the List of City of Pittsburgh historic designations on December 26, 1972. They were added to the List of National Historic Landmarks on May 11, 1976. A new jail opened in spring 1995, and the original jail now houses the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas Family Division.

The Grant Building is 40-story, 147.8 m (485 ft) skyscraper at 310 Grant Street in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The building was completed and opened on February 1, 1929 at a cost of $5.5 million ($86.8 million today). The Art Deco building's facade is built with Belgian granite, limestone, and brick. It was famous for a radio antenna that rose roughly 100–150 feet (30–46 m) from the roof of the tower and had an aviation beacon that spelled out .--. .. - - ... -... ..- .-. --. .... or P-I-T-T-S-B-U-R-G-H in Morse Code. The beacon could be seen as far away as 150 miles (240 km) on clear nights. A smaller version of the beacon, still flashing out the name of the city remains to this day, although malfunctions with the relay switch caused it to spell "P-I-T-E-T-S-B-K-R-R-H", and eventually "T-P-E-B-T-S-A-U-R-G-H" before being repaired on July 27, 2009.The tower on the roof also served as the broadcast antenna for radio station KDKA Pittsburgh which made the first commercially licensed radio broadcast on election night of 1920. At 7:00 AM on its 14th birthday (February 2, 1934), the radio station inaugurated new studios on the Grant Building's third floor. Huntington National Bank, which operates a branch inside the tower, owns the signage rights, giving them two signs in the Pittsburgh skyline alongside Centre City Tower where Huntington has their Western Pennsylvania headquarters.

The U.S. city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was home to a "small, but busy" Chinatown, located at the intersection of Grant Street and Boulevard of the Allies in Downtown Pittsburgh where only two Chinese restaurants remain. The On Leong Society was located there. According to the article, "... the first Chinese community in Pittsburgh developed around Wylie Avenue above Court Place," according to a 1942 newsletter of the American Service Institute of Allegheny County. The Chinatown spread to Grant Street, and then "... to Water Street and then spread out to Second and Third avenues."

The Demmler Brothers Warehouse is a historic building in Downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The building began as a three-story livery stable constructed in 1889–90 by the Pittsburgh Transfer Company. In 1904, it was sold to the Demmler Bros. Company, a hardware and sheet metal business. Demmler Bros. added two floors to the building around 1907, followed by an adjoining annex in 1925. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2026. The 1889–1907 section of the warehouse is a five-story, six-bay Romanesque Revival style brick building on a stone foundation. The ground floor has an arcade with three large arched openings—originally entrances for horses and carts—and one small arched doorway. The annex is a five-story Commercial style building with an asymmetrical stepped parapet concealing a stair tower.

The Pittsburgh City-County Building is the seat of government for the City of Pittsburgh, and houses both Pittsburgh and Allegheny County offices. It is located in Downtown Pittsburgh at 414 Grant Street, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Built from 1915-17 it is the third seat of government of Pittsburgh. Today the building is occupied mostly by Pittsburgh offices with Allegheny County located in adjacent county facilities. It also contains a courtroom used for the Pittsburgh sessions of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania.
