Willingale, Essex

St Andrew's Church is a redundant Anglican church in the village of Willingale, Essex, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building, and is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. The church stands less than 50 yards (46 m) from the adjacent church of St Christopher, and shares its churchyard.

In 1931 the civil parish had a population of 95.Since 1946 the village has been part of the civil parish of Willingale. The village name is believed to be derived from Shellow, meaning a bend in the river, and the Beaulieu family. The village church, dedicated to St Peter and St Paul, is no longer in use as such, having become a private dwelling. Shellow Bowells is mentioned by Bill Bryson in Notes From A Small Island and Paul Theroux's The Kingdom By The Sea. It is referred to as Shallow Bowells in Part Five of Random Harvest by James Hilton.

The hamlet is within The Rodings group of civil parishes, and is 9 miles (14 km) west from the county town of Chelmsford. The village of Beauchamp Roding is less than 1 mile (1.6 km) to the north, and Fyfield 1.5 miles (2.4 km) to the south. The River Roding flows through Birds Green, and feeds three lakes for angling at the northeast of the hamlet.

Norton Heath is a hamlet in the High Ongar civil parish, and the Epping Forest District of Essex, England. The settlement is at the northeast of the parish and on the north side of the Harlow to Chelmsford A414 road.

Royal Air Force Chipping Ongar or more simply RAF Chipping Ongar is a former Royal Air Force station located 2 miles (3.2 km) northeast of Chipping Ongar; about 20 miles (32 km) northeast of London. Opened in 1943, it was used by both the Royal Air Force (RAF) and United States Army Air Forces (USAAF). During the war it was used primarily as a bomber airfield. After the war it was closed in 1959 after many years of being a reserve airfield. Today the remains of the airfield are located on private property being used as agricultural fields.

According to the 2001 census it had a population of 427, increasing to 481 at the 2011 census. The parish includes Abbess Roding, Beauchamp Roding, and Berners Roding, three of The Rodings, the hamlet of Birds Green, and the small settlement of Nether Street. The parish was formed in 1946 when the three parishes merged.

The settlement is at the north of the parish, and less than 1 mile north from the A414 Harlow to Chelmsford road. In 1961 the civil parish had a population of 187. The village is situated on the B184 road, and approximately 3 miles (5 km) north-east of Chipping Ongar, 7 miles (11 km) east of Harlow and 8 miles (13 km) west of Chelmsford. The River Roding flows south through the village. Fyfield Mill is 180 yards (165 m) below Willingale Road at the south of the village. The watermill, which sits at the head of a mill pond on the River Roding, dates to the late 13th century and is a Grade II listed building.Fyfield Hall on Willingale Road is the oldest inhabited timber-framed building in England. The house dates chiefly to the mid–13th century, contains an aisled hall dated 1140, and is Grade I listed.
