Mickley Green

Whepstead is a village and civil parish in the West Suffolk district of Suffolk in eastern England, located south of Bury St Edmunds. Once the property of Bury Abbey it became a possession of the Drury family at the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century. Whepstead Church is dedicated to St Petronilla the only such dedication in England. In 1870–72, John Marius Wilson described Whepstead in his Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales like this: "WHEPSTEAD, a parish, with a village, in Thingoe district, Suffolk; 4½ miles SSW of Bury-St. Edmunds r. station. It has a post-office under Bury-St. Edmunds. Acres, 2,670. Real property, £4,281. Pop., 677. Houses, 140. The property is much subdivided. Plumpton House is the seat of W. R. Bevan, Esq. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Ely. Value, £600.* Patron, A. R. Steele, Esq. The church is good; and there are an endowed school with £35 a year, and charities £50"Hamlets in the parish of Whepstead include Melon Green, Mickley Green and Stone Cross Green. There is one pub in Whepstead called The White Horse, which is a free house built in the 17th century.A community centre is located on the B1066 Bury St Edmunds to Hartest road. It is managed by the local community and is regularly used for activities including keep fit, carpet bowls, and the cricket club.

Hawstead is a small village and civil parish in the West Suffolk district of Suffolk in eastern England. It is located 5 kilometres (3 mi) south of Bury St. Edmunds between the B1066 and A134 roads, in a fork formed by the River Lark and a small tributary. The place-name 'Hawstead' is first attested in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it appears as Haldsteada. The name is thought to mean 'a place of shelter for cattle'.Hawstead Place, previously the seat of the Drury family, is now a farmhouse. Sir William Drury was sheriff and knight of the shire for Suffolk. Lady Drury's Closet (also known as the Hawstead Panels), now in Christchurch Mansion in Ipswich, is a series of painted wooden panels of early 17th-century date. They originally decorated a painted closet adjacent to a bedroom in Hawstead Place. It is believed they were made for Anne Drury, Lady Drury, wife of Sir Robert Drury, who died in 1624. Lt Col Edward Robert Drury, son of Rev Sir William Drury, was the first General Manager and President of the Queensland Bank of Australia now the National Australia Bank; he named his Queensland home 'Hawstead' in 1875.

The Church of Our Lady Immaculate and St Joseph, otherwise known as Coldham Cottage is the oldest continuing Roman Catholic church in Suffolk. It is in Bury Road, Lawshall and is part of the Diocese of East Anglia. It is in the Catholic parish of Bury St Edmunds. In 1998, it was designated as a Grade II Listed Building.The church is located in Bury Road near the entrance to Coldham Hall. From the time of the Reformation the history of the Catholic Mission had been closely linked to the Rookwood family and Coldham Hall. The hall itself is in the neighbouring parish of Stanningfield but the main entrance gatehouse, the avenue and the present church are in Lawshall.

Ickworth is a small civil parish, almost coextensive with the estate of the National Trust's Ickworth House, in the West Suffolk district of Suffolk, eastern England, 2.3 miles (3.7 km) south-west of Bury St Edmunds. The population of the parish was only minimal at the 2011 Census and is included in the civil parish of Lawshall.

Brockley (not to be confused with Brockley Green, 8 miles (13 km) southwest in Hundon parish) is a village and civil parish in the West Suffolk district of Suffolk, England. Brockley parish includes the hamlets of Pound Green and Gulling Green. According to the 2001 Census parish population was 281, and increased to 312 at the 2011 Census. The village is situated approximately 7 miles (11 km) south of Bury St Edmunds and 9 miles (14 km) north of Sudbury on the B1066. Also it is 2 miles (3 km) north of Hartest. A small hamlet is recorded in Domesday as "Brochola" or "Broclega": the name originates from 'woodland clearing by a brook'. Mill Road marks the location of a former post mill which was demolished in 1930. East of B1066 is Willow Tree Farm (now Britton's Farm) (farthest out) with a small chapel (halfway to B1066). West of B1066 is Mile Farm (now Long's Farm) with the Pumping Station farthest west. Brockley Hall and St Andrew's Church are still around 1 km north of the village. St Andrew's dates from medieval times but was renovated in 1866. It is a Grade II* listed building. Brockley Hall is Grade I listed.There have been no public houses in the village since the 1980s, although before then there had been two: the Fox and Hounds and The Six Bells. A blacksmith used to be next door to the pub. A shop, and petrol station closed some years ago.Brockley Cricket Club started over 60 years ago and supports three teams playing in local leagues, a midweek team and a youth programme. The village also supports an indoor bowls club that has enjoyed some success in the past.

Lambs Lane is a nucleated settlement in the civil parish of Lawshall in the Babergh district in the county of Suffolk, England. In addition to Lambs Lane, the settlement includes The Glebe, Shepherds Drive, Windsor Drive, Churchill Close and Rectory Corner. Melford Road is partly within Lambs Lane and Golden Lane is to the west of the settlement. Lambs Lane is located between Harrow Green, which it almost abuts, and Brockley to the west, and is around one and a half miles off the A134 between Bury St Edmunds and Sudbury.

Horringer, formerly also called Horningsheath, is a village and civil parish in the West Suffolk district of Suffolk in eastern England. It lies on the A143 about two miles south-west of Bury St Edmunds. The population in 2011 was 1055.

Harrow Green is a hamlet in the civil parish of Lawshall in the Babergh district in the county of Suffolk, England. It is located between Lambs Lane and The Street and is just over a mile off the A134 between Bury St Edmunds and Sudbury.

Coldham Hall is a Grade I listed building, built in 1574, that is located in the parish of Bradfield Combust with Stanningfield in Suffolk. The Hall is very close to the village of Lawshall, and part of the Coldham estate is located within this parish.

Hay Wood, Whepstead is a 10.4-hectare (26-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest west of Whepstead in Suffolk.This ancient wood on poorly drained boulder clay has coppice trees of small-leaved lime and field maple with an understorey of hazel. Flora include wood spurge, herb Paris, ramsons and early purple orchid.The site is private land, with no public access.

Horringer Court Caves is a 3.8-hectare (9.4-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest on the southern outskirts of Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk.This site has over 500 m (1,600 ft) of chalk mines, with five grilled entrances, which are used by bats for hibernation. They have been the subject of research since 1947. The main bats using the caves are Daubenton's, but other species include the very rare barbastelle, which have been recorded eight times in 36 years.This site in the grounds of a hotel is private property.

Hardwick House was a manor house near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, owned by Sir Robert Drury, Speaker of the House of Commons, of Hawstead Place. It was subsequently purchased in the seventeenth century by Royalist Thomas Cullum, a former Sheriff of London. Experts in Suffolk county history as well as noted authorities in antiquarian and botanical matters, the Cullum family of eight successive baronets authored works on the county and its fauna and flora. Sir Thomas Gery Cullum, a Charterhouse graduate, medical doctor and member of the Royal Academy and the Linnean Society, was a well-regarded author on science and botany.
