Brockley, Suffolk

Hartest is a small village and civil parish in the Babergh district of the English county of Suffolk. It is located halfway between Bury St. Edmunds and Sudbury on the B1066 road in the Glem valley. Brockley is two miles north. The village of Hartest dates back to before 1086 and features in the Domesday Book. The name 'Hartest' is thought to mean either 'Stag Hill' or 'Stag Wood'. It is claimed that there are no other villages, towns or cities in the world of the same name.The village is centred on the large village green, fringed by an array of brightly coloured cottages, the village hall or institute, the medieval All Saints church and the Crown public house, formerly Hartest Hall the local landowner's seat. There is an annual fete held on the village green at the end of August each year.Running east of the village centre is Hartest Hill, the steepest in Suffolk.Former Special Envoy for the Archbishop of Canterbury and Islamic Jihad Organization hostage, Terry Waite lives in the village.

Somerton is a civil parish in the Babergh district of Suffolk in eastern England. Somerton is split into two smaller villages: Upper Somerton with a population of approximately 50 and Somerton with a population of about 20. Upper Somerton is at the top of one valley and has St. Margaret's Church, a phone box and post box. Somerton is at the bottom of the same valley and has only a post box. The villages comprise rural houses and farms with some council houses. Its nearest villages are Hartest, Brockley and Hawkedon. There was once quite the rivalry between Hartest and Somerton, and a giant stone found in Somerton was stolen by Hartest and rolled down the valley where it still sits on their village green.The nearest town is Bury St Edmunds or Sudbury.

Boxted is a village and civil parish in the Babergh district of Suffolk, England. Located around 8 miles (13 km) north of Sudbury, in 2005 it had a population of 120. From the 2011 Census the population was included in the civil parish of Somerton. According to Eilert Ekwall, the meaning of the village name is place where box grow. The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book, at which time it had a population of 25.

Rede is a village and civil parish in the West Suffolk district of Suffolk in eastern England. Its location is situated South East of Chedburgh. In 1887 Rede was described as being "7 miles S[outh] W[est] of Bury St Edmonds, 1224 ac[res], pop[ulation] 224".Its population in 2011 was 131 residents according to the Census taken in that year.The institutional history of Rede explains that it has always been a place of housing for agricultural workers, craftsmen and the lower class in general. It is thought that the name "Rede" originates from a mercer from London, William Rede who was granted the manor and advowson of nearby medieval site of Beccles.Great Wood Hill, the highest point in Suffolk, is around 1.7 km (1.1 mi) west of Rede.

Whepstead is a village and civil parish in the West Suffolk district of Suffolk in eastern England, located south of Bury St Edmunds. Once the property of Bury Abbey it became a possession of the Drury family at the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century. Whepstead Church is dedicated to St Petronilla the only such dedication in England. In 1870–72, John Marius Wilson described Whepstead in his Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales like this: "WHEPSTEAD, a parish, with a village, in Thingoe district, Suffolk; 4½ miles SSW of Bury-St. Edmunds r. station. It has a post-office under Bury-St. Edmunds. Acres, 2,670. Real property, £4,281. Pop., 677. Houses, 140. The property is much subdivided. Plumpton House is the seat of W. R. Bevan, Esq. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Ely. Value, £600.* Patron, A. R. Steele, Esq. The church is good; and there are an endowed school with £35 a year, and charities £50"Hamlets in the parish of Whepstead include Melon Green, Mickley Green and Stone Cross Green. There is one pub in Whepstead called The White Horse, which is a free house built in the 17th century.A community centre is located on the B1066 Bury St Edmunds to Hartest road. It is managed by the local community and is regularly used for activities including keep fit, carpet bowls, and the cricket club.

Ashen Wood is nearby where the parish gallows were located.

Hay Wood, Whepstead is a 10.4-hectare (26-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest west of Whepstead in Suffolk.This ancient wood on poorly drained boulder clay has coppice trees of small-leaved lime and field maple with an understorey of hazel. Flora include wood spurge, herb Paris, ramsons and early purple orchid.The site is private land, with no public access.

Lambs Lane is a nucleated settlement in the civil parish of Lawshall in the Babergh district in the county of Suffolk, England. In addition to Lambs Lane, the settlement includes The Glebe, Shepherds Drive, Windsor Drive, Churchill Close and Rectory Corner. Melford Road is partly within Lambs Lane and Golden Lane is to the west of the settlement. Lambs Lane is located between Harrow Green, which it almost abuts, and Brockley to the west, and is around one and a half miles off the A134 between Bury St Edmunds and Sudbury.

Hawkedon is a village and civil parish in the West Suffolk district of Suffolk in eastern England. Located around 7 miles (11 km) south-south-west of Bury St Edmunds, the parish also contains the hamlet of Thurston End, and in 2005 had a population of 120. The majority of the village is classed as a conservation area.

Harrow Green is a hamlet in the civil parish of Lawshall in the Babergh district in the county of Suffolk, England. It is located between Lambs Lane and The Street and is just over a mile off the A134 between Bury St Edmunds and Sudbury.

The Church of Our Lady Immaculate and St Joseph, otherwise known as Coldham Cottage is the oldest continuing Roman Catholic church in Suffolk. It is in Bury Road, Lawshall and is part of the Diocese of East Anglia. It is in the Catholic parish of Bury St Edmunds. In 1998, it was designated as a Grade II Listed Building.The church is located in Bury Road near the entrance to Coldham Hall. From the time of the Reformation the history of the Catholic Mission had been closely linked to the Rookwood family and Coldham Hall. The hall itself is in the neighbouring parish of Stanningfield but the main entrance gatehouse, the avenue and the present church are in Lawshall.
