Morzine

Montriond (French pronunciation: ​[mɔ̃tʁijɔ̃]; Arpitan: Meûryan) is a commune in the Haute-Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France. It is just north of the ski resorts of Morzine and Avoriaz in the Portes du Soleil ski resorts area. Just east lies Lac de Montriond, a small lake. Montriond's village centre features a small supermarket, ski/outdoors retailer and several restaurants as well as a tourist information office and a Mairie.

Lac de Montriond is a lake at Montriond in the Haute-Savoie department of France. It has a surface area of 32 ha. There is a circular path around the lake and several restaurants next to the D228 access road (which connects Montriond to Les Lindarets). In Winter the lake surface frequently freezes over and the immediate area surrounding the lake experiences extremes of cold due to the topology of the surrounding area blocking most sunlight during the coldest months of Winter.

La Côte-d'Arbroz is a commune in the Haute-Savoie department and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of eastern France.

Les Gets (French pronunciation: [le ʒɛ]) is a commune in the Haute-Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France. The village's first single-person chair lift was opened in 1938 with the first chair lift on Mont Chéry in 1954.

Essert-Romand is a commune in the Haute-Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France. Bordering the winter skiing resort town of Morzine, Essert-Romand is a popular location for holiday homes and ski chalets which are largely unused outside the winter season. There is a small active farming community, farming mainly sheep and goats.

Col de Joux Plane (el. 1691 m.) is a high mountain pass in the Alps in Haute-Savoie, France, linking Morzine with Samoëns. The climb has been featured several times in the Tour de France cycling race

Col de la Joux Verte (el. 1760 m.) is a high mountain pass in the Alps in France. Both roads to it come from the resort of Morzine, allowing a round trip to be made. The ski station of Morzine-Avoriaz is nearby, which hosted Tour de France stage finishes in 1975, 1977, 1983, 1985, 1979, 1994, and 2010.

Les Portes du Soleil (literally "The Doors of the Sun") is a major skisports destination in the Alps, encompassing thirteen resorts between Mont Blanc in France and Lake Geneva in Switzerland. With more than 650 km of marked pistes (claimed by the lift companies; an independent expert measured about 426 km ) and about 200 lifts in total, spread over 14 valleys and about 1,036 square kilometres (400 sq mi), Portes du Soleil ranks among the two largest ski areas in the world (the other being Les Trois Vallées). Almost all of the pistes are connected by lifts – a few marginal towns can be reached only by the free bus services in the area. The highest elevation accessible on skis is 2260 m (Pointe de Mossettes) and the lowest is 930 m (Abondance Village). As with many other Alpine ski resorts, the lower slopes of the Portes du Soleil have snow-making facilities to extend the ski season by keeping the lower slopes open during the warmer months. The name Portes du Soleil originates from the 1,950-meter-high pass of the same name, connecting Morgins to Les Crosets.

Avoriaz (French: [avɔʁja], Franco-Provençal: [aˈvɔʁja, aˈvɔʁi]) is a French mountain resort in the heart of the Portes du Soleil. It is located in the territory of the commune of Morzine. It is easily accessible from either Thonon at Lake Geneva or Cluses station on the A40 motorway between Geneva and Chamonix. Either way one follows the D902, Route des Grandes Alpes, to Morzine and then the D338 running from Morzine to Avoriaz. Snow chains are often necessary. Avoriaz is built on a shelf high above the town of Morzine, which is among the pioneering towns of skiing with its first lifts dating back to the early 1930s. Today Avoriaz is one of the major French ski destinations catering for all standards of skiing and ranks among the top snowboarding destinations of the world. Apart from snow-based pursuits, Avoriaz is also a centre for trekking, golf, VTT (mountain biking) and other outdoor activities during the summer. Cars are forbidden in Avoriaz. The resort is designed to be fully skiable. Other transport around the resort includes horse-drawn sleighs and snowcats during winter. One of the principal owners of Avoriaz is the tourism and real estate development company Pierre & Vacances, whose founder, Gerard Bremont, took an active part in building the station.
