Lac de Montriond is a lake at Montriond in the Haute-Savoie department of France. It has a surface area of 32 ha. There is a circular path around the lake and several restaurants next to the D228 access road (which connects Montriond to Les Lindarets). In Winter the lake surface frequently freezes over and the immediate area surrounding the lake experiences extremes of cold due to the topology of the surrounding area blocking most sunlight during the coldest months of Winter.

Montriond (French pronunciation: ​[mɔ̃tʁijɔ̃]; Arpitan: Meûryan) is a commune in the Haute-Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France. It is just north of the ski resorts of Morzine and Avoriaz in the Portes du Soleil ski resorts area. Just east lies Lac de Montriond, a small lake. Montriond's village centre features a small supermarket, ski/outdoors retailer and several restaurants as well as a tourist information office and a Mairie.

Abondance is a commune in the Haute-Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France. It lies in the French Alps just south of Lake Geneva on the Swiss border. The people of this commune are referred to as Abondanciers. Abondance has given its name to a variety of cheese made in the region, the breed of cattle from whose milk the cheese is made and the valley in which it stands. Other villages in the Vallee D'Abondance are Chatel and La Chapelle D'Abondance. It is a small and quiet town with several bars, hotels, restaurants, a bank, some food and ski/outdoor shops and a lively Sunday morning Market serving the Vallee D'Abondance. One of its features is the 14th century Abbey. The commune was founded around the year 1040. In the 2006–2007 ski season, a year of very poor snowfall, a decision was made to shut down the town's ski area after a long period of loss-making. The town's plea for government aid to support the resort was denied due to its unlikeliness to return to profit due to lack of snow. However, the resort reopened in 2009–10 and each winter since has remained open throughout the season. L'Essert is the name of the town's ski area and it has 7 lifts and 13 runs of which there are two nursery slopes, 6 blue runs, 3 red and 2 black and a mountain restaurant. Ecole du Ski Francais operates in Abondance. In addition to downhill skiing, the resort has 10 km of cross country ski and snow shoe trails. Summer visitors go to Abondance for the walking, history and outdoor activities. Abondance is home to the international boarding school Sainte Croix des Neiges.

Col de la Joux Verte (el. 1760 m.) is a high mountain pass in the Alps in France. Both roads to it come from the resort of Morzine, allowing a round trip to be made. The ski station of Morzine-Avoriaz is nearby, which hosted Tour de France stage finishes in 1975, 1977, 1983, 1985, 1979, 1994, and 2010.

Morzine (French pronunciation: [mɔʁzin]; Arpitan: Morzena), alternatively known as Morzine-Avoriaz (pronounced [mɔʁzin avɔʁja]), is an alpine commune on the Swiss border in the Haute-Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in Southeastern France. It is located in the French-Swiss Chablais historical area, south-southeast of Évian-les-Bains and just west of Champéry in Valais. As of 2020, it had a population of 2,690. The town of Morzine is situated in the French Alps' Vallée d'Aulps (Aulps Valley), which stretches from Morzine to La Vernaz in the northwest. A traditional market town in the heart of the Portes du Soleil, Morzine is dominated by chalets spread across a river gorge, bordered by partially wooded slopes allowing skiing in poor weather conditions. Situated at an altitude of about 1,000 m, it is one of the most northerly of the French Alpine resorts, weatherwise benefiting from the Mont Blanc microclimate. The locality enjoys panoramic mountain views and modern ski facilities, as well as hotels and restaurants in the town itself. The ski resort of Avoriaz is located on the territory of the commune.

Essert-Romand is a commune in the Haute-Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France. Bordering the winter skiing resort town of Morzine, Essert-Romand is a popular location for holiday homes and ski chalets which are largely unused outside the winter season. There is a small active farming community, farming mainly sheep and goats.

Saint-Jean-d'Aulps is a commune in the Haute-Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France. Situated in the heart of the Vallée d'Aulps, as well as being the home to an active farming community, it is popular with holiday-makers in the Summer, for walking, and in the Winter for skiing as it is a part of the massive Portes du Soleil ski area. The inhabitants are called (in French) the "Jovanétiens". The commune is spread over 40,2 km2 has 1,189 inhabitants, 6,900 beds for tourists, 464 main residences, and 1,358 secondary residences. The population density is 29,58 inhabitants/km2. Saint-Jean-d'Aulps is surrounded by the communes of Seytroux, Le Biot, Abondance, Essert Romand and Bellevaux. The closest town is Thonon les Bains 25 km away. The river "la Dranse de Morzine" is the main water course through the village. In the commune, at an altitude of 805m, is the ski-area "l’Espace Roc d’Enfer". One can ski between 900m and 1800m above sea-level and offers, amongst wild, unspoilt, and preserved terrain, 20 pistes (ski-runs) givings a total of 40 km of tracks. A large portion of these tracks are covered by artificial snow-making machines to make the skiing more snow-sure in lighter Winters. Saint-Jean-d'Aulps also offers many summer-time activities, namely: rock climbing, via ferrata, walking and hiking, mountain-biking routes, fishing, and para-gliding.

Mont de Grange (French pronunciation: [mɔ̃ də ɡʁɑ̃ʒ]; 2,432 m) is a mountain of the Chablais Alps in Haute-Savoie, France.

Les Portes du Soleil (literally "The Doors of the Sun") is a major skisports destination in the Alps, encompassing thirteen resorts between Mont Blanc in France and Lake Geneva in Switzerland. With more than 650 km of marked pistes (claimed by the lift companies; an independent expert measured about 426 km ) and about 200 lifts in total, spread over 14 valleys and about 1,036 square kilometres (400 sq mi), Portes du Soleil ranks among the two largest ski areas in the world (the other being Les Trois Vallées). Almost all of the pistes are connected by lifts – a few marginal towns can be reached only by the free bus services in the area. The highest elevation accessible on skis is 2260 m (Pointe de Mossettes) and the lowest is 930 m (Abondance Village). As with many other Alpine ski resorts, the lower slopes of the Portes du Soleil have snow-making facilities to extend the ski season by keeping the lower slopes open during the warmer months. The name Portes du Soleil originates from the 1,950-meter-high pass of the same name, connecting Morgins to Les Crosets.

La Côte-d'Arbroz is a commune in the Haute-Savoie department and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of eastern France.

Avoriaz (French: [avɔʁja], Franco-Provençal: [aˈvɔʁja, aˈvɔʁi]) is a French mountain resort in the heart of the Portes du Soleil. It is located in the territory of the commune of Morzine. It is easily accessible from either Thonon at Lake Geneva or Cluses station on the A40 motorway between Geneva and Chamonix. Either way one follows the D902, Route des Grandes Alpes, to Morzine and then the D338 running from Morzine to Avoriaz. Snow chains are often necessary. Avoriaz is built on a shelf high above the town of Morzine, which is among the pioneering towns of skiing with its first lifts dating back to the early 1930s. Today Avoriaz is one of the major French ski destinations catering for all standards of skiing and ranks among the top snowboarding destinations of the world. Apart from snow-based pursuits, Avoriaz is also a centre for trekking, golf, VTT (mountain biking) and other outdoor activities during the summer. Cars are forbidden in Avoriaz. The resort is designed to be fully skiable. Other transport around the resort includes horse-drawn sleighs and snowcats during winter. One of the principal owners of Avoriaz is the tourism and real estate development company Pierre & Vacances, whose founder, Gerard Bremont, took an active part in building the station.
