Lake Toxaway is an unincorporated community in western Transylvania County, North Carolina on U.S. Route 64, and North Carolina Highway 281.

Lake Toxaway is the largest privately held lake in North Carolina. The lake, developed by the Lake Toxaway Company, is man-made and covers 640 acres (2.6 km2) 60 feet (18 m), and the shoreline is 14 miles (23 km). Water sources for the lake include multiple free-flowing mountain streams with the Toxaway River being the main source. The lake flows out onto Toxaway Falls and then continues down the Toxaway River. The main road through the Lake Toxaway area is U.S. Highway 64, a typical winding mountain road with tight turns. Lake Toxaway history encompasses two distinct time periods. The first era which began in 1890 ended with the collapse of the earthen dam in 1916. In 1960 the second era began when the Lake Toxaway Company purchased the land and rebuilt the lake.

Hillmont, also known as the Armstrong-Moltz House and Greystone Inn, is a historic home located at Lake Toxaway, Transylvania County, North Carolina. It was built about 1915, and is a large 2+1⁄2-story, board and batten sheathed square block with two rambling stone additions. It features flower boxes on all windows, balconies, and casement windows, which give an impression of Swiss-chalet design. It was rehabilitated as the Greystone Inn in the mid-1980s. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. After closing in 2015, the Greystone Inn was purchased by Geoff and Shannon Ellis in 2017. The new owners renovated the Greystone Inn during the winter and spring of 2018 to bring the inn back to its former glory, and reopened the inn to the public in May 2018. The Greystone Inn is open year-round with 30 guest rooms, a lakeside restaurant, and a full-service spa.

E. M. Backus Lodge, also known as Camp Toxaway, The Cold Mountain Lodge and Canaan Land Christian Retreat , is a historic hunting lodge and national historic district located near Lake Toxaway, Jackson County and Transylvania County, North Carolina. The lodge was built about 1903, and is a 2-story, double-pile house of chestnut logs. The lodge contains eight rooms on two floors, each grouped around a central hall. Also on the property are the contributing log stable (1908, 1922), caretaker's cottage (1908, 1922), guest cottage (c. 1922), barn (c. 1922), and Davis Cottage (c. 1922). The site was the former hunting lodge of Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone. The camp became an exclusive girls' camp, Camp Toxaway, in 1922, and a religious and educational retreat in 1955 known as Canaan Land. The estate was bought by George and Nancy Corbett of Florida in 1986 and is still operated by the Corbett family. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

Gorges State Park is a 7,709-acre (31.20 km2) North Carolina state park in Transylvania County, North Carolina in the United States and along with other conservation lands is part of a 100,000+ acre conservation corridor stretching some 80 miles along the NC/SC state line. The land, along Jocassee Gorges, was purchased by the state from Duke Energy Corporation in 1999. It is North Carolina's westernmost state park and one of the state's newest. The park is adjacent to part of the Pisgah National Forest and the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission's Toxaway Game Land. Gorges State Park provides the principal access to the Horsepasture River on these adjoining public lands.

Whitewater Falls is a series of waterfalls and cascades on the Whitewater River in North Carolina and South Carolina. Over the 3.5 mi (5.6 km) course of the river between the two falls, the Whitewater River drops 1,500 ft (460 m), and crosses the state border. Both Falls can be hiked to via the Foothills Trail or spur trails. Lookouts allow you to view both falls. Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI) (pronounced perry) is a non-profit astronomical observatory located in the Pisgah National Forest near Balsam Grove, North Carolina. PARI operates multiple radio telescopes and optical telescopes for research and teaching purposes. The observatory is affiliated with the University of North Carolina system through the Pisgah Astronomical Research and Science Educational Center (PARSEC).

Balsam Grove is an unincorporated community located in Transylvania County, North Carolina within Pisgah National Forest and Nantahala National Forest. The Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute is located in Balsam Grove.

The Horsepasture River is an 18.1-mile-long (29.1 km) National Wild and Scenic river in the U.S. states of North Carolina and South Carolina. The river rises in Jackson County, North Carolina, and flows through the Jocassee Gorges area and ends at Lake Jocassee in South Carolina. Some of the land over which the river flows is part of the Pisgah National Forest, making it accessible to the public. North Carolina designated 4.5 miles (7.2 km) of the river as Horsepasture State Natural River in 1985, including it in the state's Natural and Scenic Rivers System. The State River is between NC-281 and the state line. The Horsepasture River features several significant waterfalls in close proximity to one another. Camp Merrie-Woode is a non-profit residential camp for girls ages 7–17 in the western hills of North Carolina with a history started in 1919. The camp resides beneath Old Bald [1] and alongside Fairfield Lake in Jackson County. In 2005 there were twenty-eight U.S. states and four foreign countries represented with 85% of campers returning the following summer. Young ladies at Camp Merrie-Woode develop confidence by participating in activities such as horseback riding, sailing, hiking, rock climbing, theatre, and river trips down the Chattooga, Nantahala, French Broad, Nolichucky, and the 'mighty' Tuckaseegee River.The North Carolina National Heritage Program lists Old Bald/Cherry Cove as one of the "significant natural areas of Jackson County" because of the forest of Northern Red Oaks in the region, as well as one of the two historic grassy balds [2] in the county. The land is registered a U.S. National Heritage Area and is owned by a combination of the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, local, and private entities. Camp Merrie-Woode operates as a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational institution. Camp Merrie-Woode's extraordinary natural setting has inspired a lasting appreciation of the world's beauty in thousands of girls and young women since 1919. In this friendly, non-competitive community of simplified living, each individual is valued for who she is and who she will become. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places for Jackson County in 1995 as a national historic district, Merrie-Woode is recognized for historical and architectural significance as a historic district that has been preserved in its original Adirondack style.

The Fairfield Inn was an historic hotel building located on Fairfield Lake near US Highway 64 in Cashiers, Jackson County, North Carolina. It was built in 1896-1898, and consisted of a 2 1/2-story main block with two rear wings. The Queen Anne style frame building featured three massive singled gables, hipped dormers, a three-story corner turret, elliptical windows, and a one-story lakeside verandah. The hotel had 100 rooms.In July, 1982, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
