Lakeland, Baltimore

"Mount Winans" ("Mt. Winans") is a mixed-use residential, commercial and industrial neighborhood in the southwestern area of the City of Baltimore in Maryland. Its north, south and east boundaries are marked by the various lines of track of the CSX Railroad (formerly the historic Baltimore and Ohio Railroad before 1987, and later briefly, the "Chessie System"). In addition, Hollins Ferry Road running to the south towards suburban Baltimore County in the southwest and further connecting with adjacent Anne Arundel County to the southeast, draws its western boundary. The neighborhood was named after Ross Winans, (1796-1877), a famous inventor of railway steam engines for the old Baltimore and Ohio Railroad at its beginnings in 1828 and later other American lines when he later set up foundries and shops adjacent to the B. & O.'s "Mount Clare Shops" on West Pratt Street in the later named Mount Clare, Union Square and Poppleton neighborhoods of southwest Baltimore. Winans was also a major industrialist partnering with similar New York City inventor and industrialist Peter Cooper, who developed the first steam-powered locomotive for the Baltimore & Ohio, the famous "Tom Thumb" of 1830. Cooper and Winans later were involved in the southeast Baltimore industrial and port development beginning in the 1820s, further east of historic Fells Point, the earlier colonial-era and late 18th Century shipbuilding and trade district of the City. Along the northern shore of the Northwest Branch of the Patapsco River and Baltimore Harbor, the new district was titled "Canton", named for the famous southern Chinese city by the "Canton Company", founded by Capt. John O'Donnell and his descendants, a ship captain who returned in the 1780s and 90s with the first cargoes on Yankee merchant ships to Maryland from the new markets and trade in Asia.

Mount Auburn Cemetery is a historic African American cemetery and national historic district in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. Overlooking the Middle Branch of the Patapsco River to the east, Baltimore's Downtown to the north and railroad tracks to the south, Mt. Auburn Cemetery is surrounded by the Cherry Hill, Westport, Mt. Winans and Lakeland communities.

Lansdowne High School (LHS), formerly known as Lansdowne Sr. High School, and currently known as the Lansdowne High School Academy for Advanced Professional Studies, is a four-year public high school in Baltimore County, Maryland, United States.

Cherry Hill station is a Baltimore Light Rail stop in Baltimore, Maryland. There is currently no free public parking at this station, but connections can be made to 3 of MTA Maryland's buses from here.The Cherry Hill stop is accessible to the streets via a walking tunnel. When the station opened in 1992, this raised concerns about safety, as the tunnel could be a hideout for muggers. The agency then known as the Mass Transit Administration pledged to keep a police vehicle parked at the station at all times to address these concerns.

Lansdowne is a census-designated place in southern Baltimore County, Maryland, United States, located just south of Baltimore. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 8,409. At the 2000 census and earlier, the area was delineated as part of the Lansdowne-Baltimore Highlands CDP.

Westport is a neighborhood in south Baltimore, Maryland. Westport is a majority African-American neighborhood that has struggled with crime, housing abandonment, and unemployment in the past decade. The neighborhood is bordered by the Middle Branch of the Patapsco River on the east, the city neighborhoods of Cherry Hill, Brooklyn and the southwestern Baltimore County community of Lansdowne to the southwest, Hollins Ferry Road and the Mount Winans and Lakeland neighborhoods to the west, and Interstate 95 to the north, along with the South Baltimore communities of Federal Hill and Otterbein. The Baltimore–Washington Parkway (Maryland Route 295 — formerly Interstate 295) runs through the middle of Westport and intersects with Interstate 95, the main East Coast super-highway, north to south, Maine to Florida.

Lansdowne-Baltimore Highlands was a census-designated place (CDP) in Baltimore County, Maryland, United States. The population was 15,724 at the 2000 census. At the 2010 census the area was split into two separate CDPs, the unincorporated communities of Lansdowne and Baltimore Highlands.

Westport station is a Baltimore Light Rail station in Baltimore, Maryland. It is located north of Smith Cove on the west side of the Patapsco River in Baltimore's the Westport neighborhood. It currently has no free public parking but has connections to MTA Maryland buses 27 and 51.

Lansdowne Christian Church (LCC, also known as Hull Memorial) was established in 1903 in Lansdowne, Maryland. Part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) denomination, Lansdowne Christian Church is located at 101 Clyde Avenue, Lansdowne, Baltimore, Maryland 21227 in southwest Baltimore County, on the southwestern outskirts of the City of Baltimore. Rev. J. B. DeHoff was the first pastor in the early 20th century. The church is currently led by the Rev. Trent Owings. Weekly services are held each Sunday morning according to the longtime traditions of the Christian Church and Disciples of Christ, a major mainline Protestant denomination in America. Special holiday services are held as well. Community outreach events in the surrounding neighborhood of Lansdowne, plus adjacent Halethorpe, Relay, Arbutus, English Consul, Baltimore Highlands,and Elkridge. Further north in the city of Baltimore are Lakeland, Morrell Park, Violetville. Many events and activities are conducted in collaboration with other local community churches. A Summer Concert series has conducted monthly concerts since 2004 with performers from the state capital of Annapolis and neighboring counties.

Carroll-Camden Industrial Area is a neighborhood in southwest Baltimore, Maryland.

Montgomery Ward Warehouse and Retail Store is a historic warehouse and retail building in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. It is an eight-story (plus penthouse) concrete structure and is roughly shaped like a squared-off number "4". The front features a penthouse tower at the main entrance bay with a balcony and capped by a flagpole. The building houses over 1,200,000 square feet (110,000 m2) of floor space flooded by light from approximately 1,000 large multi-paned, steel frame windows. It was built about 1925 as a mail order and retail warehouse for Montgomery Ward on an 11 acres (4.5 ha) site adjacent to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad tracks. The complex was one of nine large warehouses built by the company in the United States.From 2001 to 2002, the vacant warehouse was restored as an office building by Himmelrich Associates, Inc. for Maryland Department of the Environment, M&T Bank and other tenants. Montgomery Ward Warehouse and Retail Store was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.

The Carrollton Viaduct, located over the Gwynns Falls stream near Carroll Park in southwest Baltimore, Maryland, is the first stone masonry bridge for railroad use in the United States, built for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, founded 1827, and one of the world's oldest railroad bridges still in use for rail traffic. Construction began in 1828 and was completed in 1829. The bridge is named in honor of Charles Carroll of Carrollton (1737–1832), of Maryland, known for being the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence, the only Roman Catholic in the Second Continental Congress (1775–1781), and wealthiest man in the Thirteen Colonies of the time of the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783). In 1982 the viaduct was designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
