SES S.A.

SES Astra SA was a corporate subsidiary of SES, based in Betzdorf, in eastern Luxembourg, that maintained and operated the Astra series of geostationary communication satellites between 2001 and 2011. Formed in 1985 as Société Européenne des Satellites (SES), it was Europe's first private satellite operator. In November 2001, upon the purchase of GE Americom from General Electric (renamed to SES Americom), SES Global was formed as the parent company to SES Americom and SES Astra. SES Astra was formed at that time as a subsidiary company to contain all of SES's existing European based satellite operations. In September 2011, SES Astra and sister subsidiary SES World Skies (formed from SES Americom and SES New Skies) were merged back into SES S.A. to streamline operations under a single management system. Subsidiaries of SES Astra, such as HD Plus and ASTRA Broadband Services became direct subsidiaries of SES. The brand name, Astra, representing the satellite family and the broadcasting system continues to be used and, although the corporate website (www.ses-astra.com) was closed when SES Astra was consolidated into the parent, the consumer site (astra.ses) remains in operation.A book, High Above, telling the story of the creation and development of Astra, SES, and SES Astra, and the history of recent developments of the European TV and media industry, along with their context in the wider development of broadcasting and space technology, was published in April 2010 to mark the 25th anniversary of SES.

As of 2017, the town of Betzdorf, which lies in the north-east of the commune, has a population of 254 inhabitants. Other settlements within the commune include the commune's administrative centre, Berg, as well as Mensdorf, Olingen, and Roodt-sur-Syre.Betzdorf Castle is the headquarters of SES, the world's largest satellite operator in terms of revenue and one of the four largest components of the Luxembourg Stock Exchange's main LuxX Index.

Flaxweiler (Luxembourgish: Fluessweiler) is a commune and small town in south-eastern Luxembourg. It is part of the canton of Grevenmacher. As of 2001, the town of Flaxweiler, which lies in the north-west of the commune, has a population of 338. Other towns within the commune include Beyren, Gostingen, Niederdonven, and Oberdonven. The Mayor of Flaxweiler is the chief executive of the administration of the Luxembourgish commune of Flaxweiler. The incumbent mayor is Théo Weirich.

Widdebierg is a hill in the commune of Betzdorf, in eastern Luxembourg. At 386 metres, it is one of the highest points in the canton of Grevenmacher. It is in the centre of a nature reserve (named Widdebierg after the hill), which lies between the towns of Flaxweiler, Mensdorf, and Roodt-sur-Syre.

The Beidweiler longwave transmitter is a high-power broadcasting transmission site owned by RTL Group and operated by RTL company Broadcasting Center Europe. It was used to transmit the French-speaking programme of RTL on longwave frequency 234 kHz until 1 January 2023. Based in Beidweiler, Luxembourg, the transmission site is situated at 49°43'58" N and 6°19'08" E and went into service in 1972 as replacement of the old Junglinster Longwave Transmitter. Junglinster remained in use as a backup site and for additional broadcast services.

It is operated by Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois, the state-owned railway company. The station is situated on Line 30, which connects Luxembourg City to the east of the country and Trier.

Roodt-sur-Syre or Roodt-sur-Syr (Luxembourgish: Rued-Sir, German: Roodt/Syre) is a town in the commune of Betzdorf, in eastern Luxembourg, and about 15 km from Luxembourg City. As of 2017, the town has a population of 1,950 inhabitants.The town is the location of the Yemeni consulate in Luxembourg. Panelux, a large bread making company, has production facilities on the outskirts of the town.
