Balearic Islands

Hispania Balearica was a Roman province encompassing the Balearic Islands off the east coast of modern Spain. Formerly a part of Hispania Tarraconensis, Balearica gained its autonomy due to its geographic separation and economic independence from the mainland. The province included three major islands: Balearis Major (Majorca), Balearis Minor (Minorca), and Ebusus (Ibiza), and the small island of Colubraria or Ophiusa (Formentera). The islands were grouped as the Gymnesiae—Majorca and Minorca, and the Pityusae—Ibiza and Formentera.

Montuïri is municipality in central Majorca, one of the Balearic Islands, Spain. It is a small town built on a hill. Cyclist Gabriel Mas was born here. It is the birthplace of Macià Manera, ex-member of Terra Lliure imprisoned during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Randa is a village and nearby hermitage located in Mallorca, Spain. It is most famous for its long history of pilgrimage starting in 1275. Being the first hermitage of Mallorca, pilgrims are nowadays just as likely to be cyclists looking for a challenge as seekers of religious inspiration. Licor Randa, an herbal liqueur is an indigenous specialty of the area.

Vilafranca de Bonany is a small municipality in the district of Pla on Majorca, one of the Balearic Islands in Spain. It is an agricultural town, known for its market stalls along the highway selling spices, fruits, and vegetables as well as tiny doughnuts called bunyols in Majorcan language and buñuelos in Spanish, and also known for the historic Santa Barbara Church built in the 1730s.In the northeast outskirts of the town is a 17th-century monastery called Ermita de Bonany, or Hermitage of Bonany. It was built in thanks for a good harvest; the name "Bonany" literally means "good year".This town borders Felanitx, Porreres, Sant Joan, Petra (birthplace of Junípero Serra) and Manacor.

Pla de Mallorca is a comarca (county) in the middle of the Majorca island, Balearic Islands, Spain. The Battle of Llucmajor (Catalan: Batalla de Llucmajor; IPA: [bəˈtaʎə ðə ˌʎumːəˈʒo]) occurred in 1349 when Peter IV of Aragon's forces defeated and killed his cousin James III of Majorca in the town of Llucmajor on the Balearic Islands, resulting in the end of the independent Kingdom of Majorca.

Mallorca, or Majorca, is the largest island of the Balearic Islands, which are part of Spain, and the seventh largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. The capital of the island, Palma, is also the capital of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands. The Balearic Islands have been an autonomous region of Spain since 1983. The international airport, Palma de Mallorca Airport, is one of the busiest in Spain; it was used by 28 million passengers in 2017, with use increasing every year between 2012 and 2017.

Algaida (Catalan pronunciation: [əlˈɣaj.ðə]) is a municipality on the Spanish Balearic island of Majorca. It has an area of 89.70 km2 with 4,528 inhabitants (as of 2005).

Sineu (Catalan: [siˈnew]) is a municipality in central Mallorca, one of the Balearic Islands, Spain. Olympic cyclist Francisco Tortellá was born here.

The Astronomical Observatory of Mallorca (Spanish: Observatorio Astronómico de Mallorca, OAM) is an observatory just south of Costitx, Mallorca, Spain.The observatory was inaugurated in May 1991 and was the first astronomical center in the Balearic Islands autonomous community and province of Spain.The observatory is a pioneer among Spanish observatories and uses robotic telescopes (four of them located at La Sagra in Andalucia) to discover and track asteroids.Researchers at the OAM have found asteroids that are potential threats to Earth, such as the 2006 WH1. Salvador Sánchez is director of the OAM. In 2008, asteroid number 128036, discovered at the OAM in 2003, was named after Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal. As of 2008, the OAM tracks more than 2,000 asteroids.There is a large planetarium attached to the observatory, which often runs performances open to the public. The Open University is one of a number of academic institutions which runs summer schools at the observatory.In March 2017, the observatory has closed and gone into liquidation. The land will be up for auction at €1.7 million.

Costitx (in Spanish, Costich) is a small municipality on Majorca, one of the Balearic Islands, Spain. The Observatorio Astronómico de Mallorca is situated just south of Costitx.
