Lockington-Hemington

Lockington Hall is a 17th-century country house, much improved and extended in later centuries, situated at Main Street, Hemington, Lockington, Leicestershire, and now converted to use as offices. It is a Grade II listed building. The two manors of Lockington, viz Nether Hall and Over Hall were anciently held by the Abbot and Convent of Leicester. Both were sold after the Dissolution of the Monasteries to the Bainbrigge family. The house was built in about 1688 on the site of the former Nether Hall. The Bainbrigge line expired in about 1797 and the estate passed to Rev Phillip Story who remodelled the house, adding a second storey, and a Tuscan colonnade to the seven bayed east front. In 1872 the property was sold by John Bainbrigge Story (High Sheriff of Leicestershire 1842) to Nathaniel Charles Curzon of Breedon Hall ( a descendant of the brother of Sir John Curzon, first of the Curzon Baronets of Kedleston Hall. Curzon greatly extended the house, adding two service wings and a porte-cochere to the five bayed north entrance front. Frances Curzon Newton of Mickleover Manor inherited the estate early in the 20th century and changed his name to Francis Curzon Curzon. The house was converted for use as offices in 1973.

Castle Donington and Shardlow railway station served the market town of Castle Donington, Leicestershire, and the village of Shardlow, Derbyshire.

Derwent Mouth is a location on the River Trent, which at that point forms the border between the English counties of Derbyshire and Leicestershire. It is both the confluence of the River Derwent with the River Trent, and the point at which the Trent and Mersey Canal joins the natural River Trent. Derwent Mouth is situated closest to Sawley, Derbyshire and is 1 mile (1.6 km) to the east of Shardlow, 2 miles (3.2 km) west of Trent Lock, where the navigable River Soar and Erewash Canal join the River Trent. It is about 9 miles (14 km) south-west of the centre of the city of Nottingham, and 7 miles (11 km) south-east of central Derby. The River Trent is navigable, with the aid of locks, downstream of Derwent Mouth as far as the Humber Estuary. The Trent itself is also navigable for a short distance upstream, but most river traffic enters the parallel Trent and Mersey Canal, which provides connections to the River Mersey and the canal networks of the West Midlands region. The River Derwent is not navigable.

The Derwent is a river in Derbyshire, England. It is 50 miles (80 km) long and is a tributary of the River Trent, which it joins south of Derby. Throughout its course, the river mostly flows through the Peak District and its foothills. Much of the river's route, with the exception of the city of Derby, is rural. However, the river has also seen many human uses, and between Matlock and Derby was one of the cradles of the Industrial Revolution. It is the site of the Derwent Valley Mills, the first industrial-scale cotton mills. Today it provides a water supply to several surrounding cities, and its steep-sided valley is an important communications corridor through the uplands of the Peak District.The scenery of the Derwent valley attracts many tourists. The upper reaches pass through the Peak District National Park, whilst the middle reaches around the old spa town of Matlock Bath offer souvenir shops and amusement arcades, together with attractions such as the Heights of Abraham and its cable car.

The East Midlands Gateway is a 700-acre (280 ha) rail freight terminal and intermodal freight centre situated to the west of the village of Kegworth in the English East Midlands. It is operated by SEGRO and officially known as the SEGRO Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway (SLPEMG). It is located within the triangle formed by the cities of Derby (15 km or 9.3 mi), Nottingham (17 km or 11 mi) and Leicester (24 km or 15 mi). It has rail access from the Castle Donington line, road access from junction 24 of the M1 motorway, and lies immediately to the north of East Midlands Airport. It thus unites air, road, and rail freight in a central location.The gateway comprises purpose-built rail freight terminal, access roads and a number of warehouses and distribution centres, making this distribution hub one of the UK's first inland ports. The rail terminal within the gateway is capable of handling up to 16 trains/day of up to 775 metres (2,543 ft) in length, and has space to store more than 5,000 TEU of shipping containers. It is linked to the railway network by a specially built 3.5-kilometre (2.2 mi) branch line, with trains linking other rail freight interchanges, the Channel Tunnel, and ports such as Southampton, Felixstowe and London Gateway.As of 2021, ten of the eleven warehouse plots on the site were let, with tenants including Amazon, Arvato, DHL, Games Workshop, Kuehne + Nagel, Shop Direct and XPO Logistics.From a local government perspective, the terminal spreads across the civil parishes of Kegworth, Lockington-Hemington and Long Whatton and Diseworth, all of which are in the district of North West Leicestershire and the county of Leicestershire.

Donington Castle was in the village of Castle Donington in Leicestershire, England to the north of East Midlands Airport (grid reference SK448276). This early 12th-century castle was held by the de Lacy family. It was attacked around the time of Magna Carta. In 1311 it passed to Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, the cousin of Edward II and eventually become Crown property. Any remains have now been incorporated into Donington House.

Monsters of Rock is a hard rock and heavy metal music festival. It was originally held annually in Castle Donington, England, from 1980 to 1996, taking place every year except 1989 and 1993. It later branched into other locations such as the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Italy, Germany, France, Sweden, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, the United States, and the Soviet Union.

The Kegworth air disaster occurred when British Midland Airways Flight 092, a Boeing 737-400, crashed onto the motorway embankment between the M1 motorway and A453 road near Kegworth, Leicestershire, England, while attempting to make an emergency landing at East Midlands Airport on 8 January 1989.The aircraft was on a scheduled flight from London Heathrow Airport to Belfast International Airport when a fan blade broke in the left engine, disrupting the air conditioning and filling the cabin with smoke. The pilots believed this indicated a fault in the right engine, since earlier models of the 737 ventilated the cabin from the right, and they were unaware that the 737-400 used a different system. The pilots mistakenly shut down the functioning engine. They selected full thrust from the malfunctioning one and this increased its fuel supply, causing it to catch fire. Of the 126 people aboard, 47 died and 74 sustained serious injuries. The inquiry attributed the blade fracture to metal fatigue, caused by heavy vibration in the newly upgraded engines, which had been tested only in the laboratory and not under representative flight conditions. The accident was the first hull loss of a Boeing 737 Classic aircraft, and the first fatal accident (and second fatal occurrence) involving a Boeing 737 Classic aircraft.

Harrington Bridge crosses the River Trent near Sawley in Derbyshire carrying the Tamworth Road (B6540) into Leicestershire. The stonework of the bridge dates from 1790, but the central section was replaced in 1905 after it was damaged by flood water. The central section is the only part of the bridge that is not a listed building.

Cavendish Bridge is a bridge over the River Trent, connecting the counties of Leicestershire and Derbyshire; it is also the name of a hamlet on the Leicestershire side of the river within the Castle Donington parish. This bridge once carried the main London-Manchester turnpike, though the modern A6/A50 dual carriageway has now been built to the south bypassing the crossing.

East Midlands Airport (IATA: EMA, ICAO: EGNX) is an international airport in the East Midlands of England, close to Castle Donington in northwestern Leicestershire, between Loughborough (10 miles (16 km)), Derby (12.5 miles (20 km)) and Nottingham (14 miles (23 km)); Leicester is (20 miles (32 km)) to the south and Lincoln (43 miles (69 km)) northeast. It serves the majority of the East Midlands region consisting of Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Southern Lincolnshire, Rutland and Derbyshire. The airfield was originally built as a Royal Air Force station known as RAF Castle Donington in 1943, before being redeveloped as a civilian airport in 1965. East Midlands Airport has established itself as a hub for low-fare airlines such as Jet2.com and Ryanair and tour operators like TUI Airways, which serve a range of domestic and European short-haul destinations. Passenger numbers peaked in 2008 at 5.6 million but declined to around 4.5 million in 2015, making it the 11th-busiest airport in the UK by passenger traffic. A central air cargo hub, it was the second-busiest UK airport for freight traffic in 2016, after London Heathrow.The airport is owned by the Manchester Airports Group (MAG), the largest British-owned airport operator, which is controlled by the ten metropolitan borough councils of Greater Manchester, with Manchester City Council retaining the controlling stake.
