Stainland

Sowood is a village in the civil parish of Stainland and District, in the Calderdale district, in the county of West Yorkshire, England. The village falls within the Greetland and Stainland ward of Calderdale Council. It is approximately 2.3 miles (3.7 km) south-west of Elland, 4.1 miles (6.6 km) north-west of Huddersfield and 4.2 miles (6.8 km) south of Halifax.

Holywell Green is a village in Calderdale, West Yorkshire, England. The village is situated approximately 1.4 miles (2 km) south-west of Elland, 3.3 miles (5 km) south of Halifax and 3.9 miles (6 km) north-west of Huddersfield. Holywell Green is part of the Greetland and Stainland Ward of Calderdale Council.

Stainland and District is a civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Calderdale in West Yorkshire, England. The main settlements in the parish are Stainland, Holywell Green and Sowood. Other settlements include Jagger Green, Old Lindley and Sowood Green. The parish also covers part of Outlane.

Stainland and Holywell Green railway station served the villages of Stainland and Holywell Green in West Yorkshire, England from 1875 until 1929. Goods services ended in 1959. It was situated in the eastern part of Holywell Green.

Greetland is a small village in the metropolitan borough of Calderdale in West Yorkshire, England. The appropriate Calderdale Ward is called Greetland and Stainland. The population of this ward at the 2011 Census was 11,389. It is located 1 mile (1.6 km) west of Elland and 2.5 miles (4.0 km) south of Halifax. In 1870–72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Greetland like this: "Greetland, a village and a chapelry in Halifax parish, W. R. Yorkshire. The village stands 1 mile W of Elland r. station, and 3 SSW of Halifax; and has a post office under Halifax. The chapelry is part of the township of Elland-cum-Greetland. Pop. 2, 584. There are stone quarries, and several large woollens, worsted, and cotton mills."

Outlane is a village in Kirklees, West Yorkshire, England, situated approximately 2.5 miles (4 km) south-west of Elland, 3.7 miles (6 km) north-west of Huddersfield and 4.5 miles (7 km) south of Halifax. The village is situated next to the M62 motorway near Junction 23 and straddles the Kirklees and Calderdale borough boundary; while the bulk of the village is within Kirklees, the north-western part of the village is part of Calderdale and the Stainland & District civil parish. The A640 Huddersfield to Rochdale road passes through the village. Outlane Cricket Club, who currently play in the Halifax Cricket League, objected to the building of the motorway in the 1960s as it would go through their ground. However the Ministry of Transport turned down the objection. Outlane has a golf course that borders the motorway. Slack Lane is the location of Slack Roman fort, whose Roman name was possibly Cambodunum.

Slack Roman Fort was a castellum near Outlane, to the west of Huddersfield in West Yorkshire, England. Its site is a scheduled monument. The ruins of the fort which lay alongside the Pennine section of the Roman road from Deva Victrix (Chester) to Eboracum (York) are no longer visible. The fort may have been the Cambodunum mentioned as a station on this route in the Antonine Itinerary.Archaeological digs indicate the fort was constructed of turf and wood to defend the Roman road in the time of Agricola in AD 79. Outside the fort walls was a stone bath-house which was extended around AD 104 and AD 120. A vicus or small settlement of wooden huts grew outside the fort.In December 2016, a retired professor from Bangor University, Peter Field, hypothesised that the fort's site was a potential location for the mythical Camelot.

Old Lindley or Over Lindley is a hamlet in the unparished area of Elland, in the Calderdale district, in the county of West Yorkshire, England. It is near the hamlet of Jagger Green, the village of Holywell Green and the town of Elland. Old Lindley has a moor called Old Lindley Moor.

The Black Brook is a small river in Calderdale, West Yorkshire, England. The Black Brook rises near the border of Calderdale and Kirklees next to Scammonden Dam. It flows downwards through Stainland Dean, and then between Greetland and Stainland. Most of the river, at this point, forms a parish border between the parishes of Greetland and Stainland. The Holywell Brook flows into the Black Brook before flowing into the River Calder at West Vale. The combined length of the two brooks is 8.85 miles (14.24 km) and they drain an area of 12 square miles (30 km2).The valley that the Black Brook flows through is named the Blackburne Valley.

West Vale railway station served on the Stainland Branch from 1875 to 1929.

St Stephen's Church is a redundant Anglican church in the village of Copley, West Yorkshire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building, and is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.

Copley is a village in the metropolitan borough of Calderdale, in the county of West Yorkshire, England, south of Halifax and east of Sowerby Bridge. It is situated by the River Calder and the Calder and Hebble Navigation canal.
