Pamplemousses District

The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanic Garden (sometimes shortened to the SSR Botanic Garden), commonly known as the Pamplemousses Botanic Garden, is a popular tourist attraction in Pamplemousses, near Port Louis, Mauritius, and the oldest botanical garden in the Southern Hemisphere. Famous for its long pond of giant water lilies (Victoria amazonica), the garden was first constructed by Pierre Poivre (1719 – 1786) in 1770, and it covers an area of around 37 hectares (91 acres).The garden, for a long time was ranked third among all the gardens that could be admired over the surface of the globe', have been known successively as 'Jardin de Mon Plaisir', 'Jardin des Plantes', 'Le Jardin National de l’Ile de France', 'Jardin Royal', 'Jardin Botanique des Pamplemousses', and during the British colonisation, 'The Royal Botanical Gardens of Pamplemousses' and 'The Royal Botanic Gardens, Pamplemousses'. On 17 September 1988 the garden was formally named "Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanic Garden", named after the first prime minister of Mauritius, as was the smaller SSR Botanical Garden of Curepipe. In addition to its giant waterlilies, the garden also features spices, ebonies, sugar canes, and 85 varieties of palms from Central America, Asia, Africa and the islands around the Indian Ocean. Many trees have been planted by world leaders and royalty, including Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, Indira Gandhi, François Mitterrand and Robert Mugabe.These gardens are situated in the village of Pamplemousses which lies about seven miles northeast of the capital, Port Louis. Pamplemousse or pamplemoucier is the grapefruit tree (Citrus x paradisi), which grows in the region, possibly introduced by the Dutch from Java.

Droopnath Ramphul State College (DRSC) is a state secondary school based in Calebasses, Mauritius. Students are prepared for the School Certificate and the Higher School Certificate. The school derives its name from an eminent judge Droopnath Ramphul.Droopnath Ramphul State College was one of the leading national colleges for girls in Mauritius. This college is known for promoting its students in academics as well as other extra-curricular activities over the years. Droopnath Ramphul State College is now an academy admitting both boys and girls with the changes in the academic rules and regulations.

The Anjalay Stadium is a multi-use stadium in Belle Vue Harel, Pamplemousses District, Mauritius. At present, it is used mostly for football matches. The parking area of the stadium is used for car racing and motorcycle racing. The stadium holds 16,000 and was renovated in 2003 for a cost of $15 million.

Mapou is a village in northern Mauritius, located in Rivière du Rempart District. The village is administered by the Mapou Village Council under the aegis of the Rivière du Rempart District Council. According to the census made by Statistics Mauritius in 2011, the population was 1,275.

Belle Vue Harel is a village in Mauritius that is located in the Pamplemousses District on the northern part of the island. It is located next to Plaine des Papayes village. It is part of the larger Plaine des Papayes area which as of 2011 had 7,607 inhabitants.The village is the site of the Stade Anjalay, which is a prominent football venue for the nation, with the national football team and two top division teams (Pamplemousses SC, AS Rivière du Rempart) being resident. Athletics is also accommodated at the stadium and the 1992 African Championships in Athletics was held in the village.

Piton State College (PSC) is a state secondary school based in Piton, Mauritius. Students are prepared for the School Certificate and the Higher School Certificate that are carried out through the Cambridge International Examinations(CIE). Piton State College is owned and controlled by the Government of Mauritius through the Ministry of Education of Mauritius.

Le Hochet is a village located in the Pamplemousses District of Mauritius. According to the 2011 census, the population was 15,034.

Sainte-Croix is a suburb of the capital city, Port Louis, in Mauritius, an independent island in the Indian Ocean. It is most famous for its association with the Roman Catholic beatus Jacques-Désiré Laval, who worked in Sainte-Croix as a missionary from 1841 until his death in 1864. He is now buried at the Church of Sainte-Croix, and is thus a place of pilgrimage for Catholics in Mauritius.

Rivière du Tombeau is a river in northwestern Mauritius. Its source is on the slopes of Pieter Both Mountain, from where it flows north and then west for a total of 16 kilometres, reaching the Indian Ocean at Baie-du-Tombeau, north of the capital of Port Louis.

Fond du Sac is a village in Mauritius located in Pamplemousses District. The village is administered by the Fond du Sac Village Council under the aegis of the Pamplemousses District Council. According to a census taken by Statistics Mauritius in 2011, the population was at 5,186.

Creve Coeur is a village in the Pamplemousses region in Mauritius.

Trou-aux-Biches is a small town with a public beach on the northern coast of the island Mauritius in the district of Pamplemousses. According to the World Travel group, the beach is one of the most beautiful on the island. They awarded it the World's Leading Beach Destination at the World Travel Award for 2011. Many tourist resorts and boutique hotels are situated near the beach, such as the Trou aux Biches Resort & Spa. From Port Louis, the M2 highway heads towards it, with Trou-aux-Biches about a mile west from the end of M2. The airport and the town are connected by a public bus. Trou-aux-Biches started off as a fishing village in the 19th century, and its name appears on the Lislet-Geoffroy map drawn in 1807 during the French colonial rule of the island. In recent time, it has evolved into a small town with a two kilometer long white sand beach shaded by casuarina trees, snorkeling reefs, boutique shops, a supermarket and other facilities along the B38 road catering to family tourism.While tourism began in Mauritius in 1952 with the construction of a small hotel in Curepipe for air crews arriving in colonial Mauritius, the first major hotel was built in Trou-aux-Biches in 1971 after Mauritius gained independence in 1968. The town retains its village style and is less commercialized than nearby Grand Baie. Inland from the town is Maheswarnath Mandir, the island's largest Hindu temple, founded in 1888.The beach at Trou-aux-Biches is popular for sunset watching.
