Emneth Hungate

Marshland Rural District was a rural district in Norfolk, England from 1894 to 1974.It was formed under the Local Government Act 1894 based on the Marshland rural sanitary district, and was named after the Freebridge Marshland hundred. It covered an area to the west of King's Lynn on the borders of Lincolnshire and the Isle of Ely. In 1930 a new parish of Nordelph was created in Downham RD, taking land mostly out of the Marshland RD parishes of Upwell and Outwell.During the period 1933-1935 it absorbed most of the area of the disbanded Walsoken Urban District, with other minor boundary changes.In 1974, the district was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972, and became part of the West Norfolk district.

Marshland St James is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. It covers an area of 25.69 km2 (9.92 sq mi) and had a population of 1,137 in 456 households at the 2001 census, increasing to 1,209 at the 2011 Census. For the purposes of local government, it falls within the district of King's Lynn and West Norfolk. Churches Marshland St James had multiple churches which are Anglican and Methodist. The parish church is St James in the deanery of Lynn Marshland, in the archdeaconry of Wisbech. The original Church of England church was St Jame. It was founded in 1837 and closed in 2002. The church did not have a graveyard. The church does not have a graveyard. Marshland Fen Methodist Church was founded before 1907. The Primitive Methodist church was an early 19th century (1807) secession from the Wesleyan Methodist church and was particularly successful in evangelising agricultural and industrial communities at open meetings. In 1932 the Primitive Methodists joined with the Wesleyan Methodists and the United Methodists to form the Methodist Church of Great Britain. Historical geography Marshland St James is about 11 miles S.W. of King's Lynn. It was created as an ecclesiastical parish in 1922, and as a civil parish in 1935, from parts of Clenchwarton, Emneth, Terrington St Clement, Terrington St John, Tilney All Saints, Tilney St Lawrence, Tilney cum Islington, Walpole St Andrew, Walpole St Peter, and West Walton. Smeeth Road was a railway station serving the villages of Emneth Hungate, Marshland St James and St John Fen's End, all east of Wisbech in Norfolk, England. The station was opened in 1848 as an extension of the East Anglian Railway's line from Magdalen Road station (now known as Watlington) to Wisbech East. The station's location, like that of the neighbouring Middle Drove station, was fairly rural and the line eventually closed in 1968, Smeeth Road's station building survived closure, and has since been converted into a private residence. The old 'Signal Box' which sat adjacent to the station remained intact until it was dismantled in 2005 and replaced with a 3 bedroom 'Eco' home. The new Signal Box retains some original features and designs of the old one with a traditional/modern look. The old platform to the station which is largely intact marks the boundary line between both the station and the signal box. The old goods shed which sat behind the station was converted into 6 flats (St James Court). This also retains some of the original features including part of the original platform.

Emneth was a railway station, near Wisbech, which served the village of Emneth, Norfolk. The station was opened in 1848 as an extension of the East Anglian Railway's line from Magdalen Road station (now known as Watlington) to Wisbech East. In 1872 Elizabeth Pearce, twelve year-old daughter of a nearby crossing keeper, drowned in the 'Tea-water pit'. The station's location, like that of the neighbouring Middle Drove station, was fairly rural and the line eventually closed in 1968. In October 1942, a hoard of Roman silver coins together with fragments of an urn in which they were stored was found near the station. Emneth's station building survived closure, and has since been converted into a private residence.

Outwell is a village and civil parish in the borough of King's Lynn and West Norfolk, in the English county of Norfolk.At the 2011 Census, the parish had a population of 2,083, an increase from 1,880 at the 2001 Census.

Beaupré Hall was a large 16th-century house mainly of brick, which was built by the Beaupres in Outwell, Norfolk, England and enlarged by their successors the Bells. Like many of Britain's country houses it was demolished in the mid-20th century.

Outwell Basin railway station was a stop on the Wisbech and Upwell Tramway in Outwell, Norfolk. It opened in 1883 carrying passenger and goods traffic from nearby farms. It was closed to passengers in 1928, with goods services continuing on the line until 1966. The line it once stood on is now a grassy track.

Emneth is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. The village is located 2.9 miles (4.7 km) south-east of Wisbech, 12 miles (19 km) south-west of King's Lynn and 46 miles (74 km) west of Norwich, close to the course of the River Nene.

Boyces Bridge railway station was a station in Norfolk on the Wisbech and Upwell Tramway commonly known as the Upwell Tramway. It was located north of Outwell. It was opened in 1883 along with the rest of the line, and closed to passengers in 1928 and goods in 1966.

Outwell Village railway station was a station in Outwell, Norfolk on the Wisbech and Upwell Tramway. It opened in 1884 and closed to passengers in 1928. Goods services ran on a while longer, before finishing in 1966. The line provided inspiration for Toby the Tram Engine.

Upwell railway station was a station in Upwell, Norfolk on the Wisbech and Upwell Tramway. It was opened in 1883 to carry passengers and agricultural wares to Wisbech where they would go to market, or be shipped off to other towns or cities. Competition with motor buses led to the station's closure to passenger services in 1928, along with the rest of the line. The line featured in BBC tv film by reporter Fyfe Robertson in 1964. Goods services continued until 1966, carrying produce from the surrounding farms; these are now carried by road. Following closure the line to Wisbech was taken up. The village signs in Upwell still bear a picture of a tram recognising the heritage of the settlement. It was during several visits that the Reverend .W. Awdry, author of the Railway Series, was inspired to come up with the character of Toby the Tram Engine modelled on the trams that worked the line. The site of the former station has recently been converted into a car park for the health centre (doctors' surgery) in Upwell. Reverend W. Awdry used to live in the old vicarage in Emneth, from the window in his attic he could see the trams acting. This led to him inventing the characters Toby the Tram Engine and later on Mavis in Thomas the Tank Engine.

The Priory of St Mary de Bello Loco, commonly referred to as Molycourt Priory, was a small Benedictine priory located in the parish of Outwell, Norfolk, England.Little is known of its history; its foundation appears to predate the Norman Conquest. Never a rich priory, as a result of a great storm and repeated floods its lands in Wiggenhall, Outwell, Upwell and Downham Market would only provide a living for a single monk. By 1446, Henry VI licensed its appropriation by the prior of Ely and it became a cell of Ely Priory.At the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539 when the monastery of Ely was dissolved it appears to have consisted of two monks, possibly older monks from Ely living in the house. It was valued at £6 14s. 11d. No trace of the buildings exist, the site now being a farm. Some human remains were discovered in 1974 but a test pit dug in 1998 appears to have found no trace of the location of the priory building.
