Drayton, Norfolk

Drayton railway station is a former station in Norfolk, England. Constructed by the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway in the 1880s, on the line between Melton Constable and Norwich, it was closed to passengers in 1959. It served the settlement of Drayton now on the outskirts of Norwich. The site is now home to an industrial site, Many of the buildings follow the old footings of the platform and other buildings. Many of the railway bridges in this area have been filled in or removed. The footings for the bridge entering Drayton from Norwich is now a house. Its former site is now on Marriott's Way. The Marriott's Way is a long-distance footpath, cycle-path and bridleway between Norwich and Aylsham, Norfolk, England. It forms part of the National Cycle Network (NCN) (Route 1) and the red route of Norwich's Pedalways cycle path network. It is open to walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Its total length is 24.6 miles (39.5 km). It has a mixture of surfaces; tarmac, compacted gravel, and earth. The name of the route originates from the chief engineer and manager of the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway (M&GNJR), William Marriott, who held the position for 41 years.

Thorpe Marriott is a residential area in Norfolk, England covering part of Taverham and Drayton parishes. Much of the housing was built in the latter part of the 20th century. It enjoys the amenities of both parishes which are easily accessible from the Fakenham road A1047 road. Although lacking its own school and surgery, The Square in Thorpe Marriott holds five shops, Thorpe Marriott village hall, Trinity Ecumenical Church (Methodist & Anglican) and The Otter public house. Costessey ( (listen) KOSS-ee) is a civil parish centred 4 miles (6.4 km) WNW of Norwich in Norfolk, England. Three centres of population exist: the long-established town/village of Costessey (now commonly Old Costessey) (2011 population 7,265); New Costessey of simlar population, incepted in the first half of the 20th century, a long network of generally residential roads north of Dereham Road, contiguous with three smaller western suburbs of the county town (city); and Queens Hill which is green-buffered and which has a small country park, mature woodland and a large golf course adjoining. The parts named Old and New are separated by the Tud, adjoining fields and by a retail/business park in the west, a divide of about 2 miles (3.2 km). Old Costessey's northern limit is with Taverham, Drayton and Hellesdon, this follows the course of the wider river Wensum. Costessey constitutes the most northern reaches of the predominantly rural South Norfolk District; Costessey is its second-most populous place as is eclipsed by Wymondham. The usual resident population of the civil parish as at 2011 was returned as 12,463.

Taverham is a village and civil parish in Norfolk, in England. It is approximately 5 miles (8 km) north-west of Norwich. Taverham sits on the River Wensum. Taverham forms part the wider Norwich Built-up area. In 2001, Taverham had a population of 10,233. It has seen recent population growth with the building of Thorpe Marriott, a new residential development that straddles the boundary with the neighbouring village of Drayton. The patron saint of Taverham is St Walstan who according to legend lived and worked in the village in the 11th century. By 2013, the area of Taverham had an approximate population of 14,121.

Horsford is a village six miles north of Norwich, England which is surrounded by the Horsford Forest and is named after the dried up section of the River Hor. Its population has seen a steady increase since the Second World War, growing from 750 in 1945 to 4,163 at the 2011 Census. There are various explanations of the village name. It is usually said to derive from 'horse ford', but it has also been suggested that it comes from the River Hor on which the village stands (more usually known to locals as 'the Beck'). A third explanation is that it comes from Horsa, the name of a Saxon chief. The surrounding Horsford Forest has been designated a County Wildlife Site. The rare silver-studded blue butterfly has a colony in this forest. The motte of the demolished Horsford Castle lies to the east of the village.

Costessey Hall (pronounced and sometimes spelt Cossey Hall, also written as Cotesby Hall) was a manor house in Costessey, Norfolk, England, four miles west of Norwich. The first mention of it dates to 1066, when William I gave it to Alan Rufus, Earl of Richmond. It was then described as Costessey Manor.

Manor Park is a cricket ground in Horsford, Norfolk. The ground is the main home ground of Norfolk County Cricket Club. The first recorded match on the ground was in 1986, when Norfolk played their first MCCA Knockout Trophy match on the ground against Suffolk. The same season they played another MCCA Knockout Trophy match against Oxfordshire at the ground. Norfolk next played at the ground in 2001, when they played their first Minor Counties Championship match on the ground against Lincolnshire. From 2001 to present, the ground has hosted 30 Minor Counties Championship matches and 22 MCCA Knockout Trophy matches.The ground has held List-A matches. The first List-A match at the ground saw Norfolk play Wales Minor Counties in the 2nd round of the 2001 Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy. From 2001 to 2003, the ground hosted 5 List-A matches, the last of which saw Norfolk play Lincolnshire in the 1st round of the 2004 Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy which was played in 2003.In local domestic cricket, the ground is the home of Horsford Cricket Club who play in the East Anglian Premier Cricket League.

Hellesdon High School is a secondary school and sixth form with academy status in Hellesdon, Norfolk, England. The school is part of the Wensum Trust. The headmaster duties are shared between Tom Rolfe & Mike Earl. The school incorporates 1,500 pupils including 300 in the Sixth Form Centre. Previously the school shared a sixth form provision with Taverham High School, but this was phased out in September 2014.
