Stane Street is the modern name of the 91 km-long (57 mi) Roman road in southern England that linked Londinium (London) to Noviomagus Reginorum (Chichester). The exact date of construction is uncertain; however, on the basis of archaeological artefacts discovered along the route, it was in use by 70 AD and may have been built in the first decade of the Roman occupation of Britain (as early as 43–53 AD). Stane Street shows clearly the engineering principles that the Romans used when building roads. A straight-line alignment from London Bridge to Chichester would have required steep crossings of the North Downs, Greensand Ridge and South Downs. The road was therefore designed to exploit a natural gap in the North Downs cut by the River Mole and to pass to the east of the high ground of Leith Hill, before following flatter land in the River Arun valley to Pulborough. The direct survey line was followed only for the northernmost 20 km (12 mi) from London to Ewell. At no point does the road lie more than 10 km (6 mi) from the direct line from London Bridge to Chichester. Today the Roman road is easily traceable on modern maps. Much of the route is followed by the A3, A24, A29 and A285, although most of the course through the modern county of Surrey has either been completely abandoned or is followed only by bridlepaths. Earthworks associated with the road are visible in many places where the course is not overlain by modern roads. Several parts of Stane Street are listed as scheduled monuments, including the well-preserved section from Mickleham Downs to Thirty Acres Barn, Ashtead.

The High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is in south-east England. Covering an area of 1,450 square kilometres (560 sq mi), it takes up parts of Kent, Surrey, East Sussex, and West Sussex. It is the fourth largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in England and Wales. Wallis Wood

Wallis Wood is a 14-hectare (35-acre) nature reserve south-east of Ewhurst in Surrey. It is managed by the Surrey Wildlife Trust.A stream runs through this woodland reserve, which has an area of meadow pasture on its bank. Woodland flora include bluebells, broad-leaved helleborine orchids, violet helleborine orchids, common spotted orchids, primroses and wood anemone. There is a rare spider, Hyptiotes paradoxus, which lives in yew trees and is only found in one other site in the county.There is access from Horsham Road in Walliswood.

Smokejack Clay Pit

Smokejack Clay Pit is a 56-hectare (140-acre) geological Site of Special Scientific Interest east of Cranleigh in Surrey. It is a Geological Conservation Review site.This site exposes Lower Cretaceous rocks of the Weald Clay Group, which have been studied since 1983. Fossils of six orders of insects have been recorded and an unusual level of details has been preserved. It is the best Weald Clay reptile site, with crocodile teeth, coprolites and part of an Iguanodon. The holotype specimen of the fish eating theropod dinosaur, Baryonyx walkeri was discovered on the site in January 1983.

Vann Lake and Ockley Woods

Vann Lake and Ockley Woods is a 57.8-hectare (143-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest south of Ockley in Surrey. Vann Lake is part of Vann Lake and Candy's Copse, a nature reserve managed by the Surrey Wildlife Trust.This site has a lake and ancient woodland which is botanically rich, especially for mosses, liverworts and fungi. There are diverse species of breeding birds and invertebrates include the rare Molophilus lackschewitzianus cranefly and purple emperor and silver-washed fritillary butterflies. There is also a population of dormice.

Ockley

Ockley is a rural village in Surrey. It lies astride the A29, the modern road using the alignment of Stane Street (Chichester). The A29 diverges from the A24 from London about 2.5 miles northeast and takes the alignment of Stane Street a mile north of the village. It is a Geological Conservation Review site.This site exposes the Horsham Stone member of the Lower Weald Clay, dating to the Early Cretaceous, around 130 million years ago. It preserves the fossils of horsetails in their upright position, suggesting that they grew in a fresh water reedswamp with a maximum depth of 2 metres (2.2 yards).A public footpath goes through a small stretch of the stream bank but the rest of the site is private land with no public access.

Field Place, Warnham

Field Place is a Grade I listed house in Warnham, West Sussex, England. It is the birthplace of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, born there in 1792. The house dates back to the thirteenth and fourteenth-centuries. It has been restored to the state it was in when Shelley lived there.Field Place was built in about 1353 by Richard Felde, and this part is now the east wing. It was later owned by the Mychel family who had added the south wing by 1525. In 1729, it was bought by Edward Shelley. On his death, the house was inherited by his nephew Sir Timothy Shelley (1753–1844), and the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792–1822) was his eldest son. The farm buildings and much of the land is now owned separately. Percy Bysshe Shelley spent his youth at Field Place, but never lived there as an adult. His son Sir Percy Shelley, 3rd Baronet (1819–1889) inherited the property.G N Charrington, who had been a tenant, acquired the property in 1929, and restored the gardens by 1949. In 1982, Kenneth Pritchard Jones bought the house and restored it.

Warnham is a village and civil parish in the Horsham district of West Sussex, England. The village is centred 2 miles (3.2 km) north-northwest of Horsham, 31 miles (50 km) from London, to the west of the A24 road. Other named settlements within the parish include the hamlets of Goosegreen, Kingsfold and Winterfold as well as parts of Strood Green and Rowhook. The area is in the northwest of the Weald, a gently sloped remnant forest in southeast England and largely a plain by erosion. The parish has a land area of 1980 hectares (4892 acres). In the 2001 census 1958 people lived in 784 households, of whom 935 were economically active. At the 2011 Census the population was 2,068. Warnham has a number of shops, including a village store and butcher, two pubs The Sussex Oak and The Greets Inn, a primary school and Warnham railway station lies nearly a mile away from the village, on the Sutton & Mole Valley Lines. The station was built primarily for the brick works, which had some sidings until recently; it offers an hourly service to London Victoria with connections to London Waterloo. E. Tredcroft's Ground

E. Tredcroft's Ground was a cricket ground at the Warnham Court estate, located at Horsham, Sussex. The first recorded match on the ground was in 1851, when the Gentlemen of Sussex played the Gentlemen of Surrey. Edward Tredcroft, after whom the ground is named, was part of the Gentlemen of Sussex team. The first first-class match held at the ground came in 1853 when Sussex played the Marylebone Cricket Club. Sussex played two further first-class matches at the ground; in 1854 and 1855, with both matches coming against the Marylebone Cricket Club. The 1855 fixture was the final recorded match on the ground. A woodland was later planted inside the boundary of the ground.
