Greek Islands (restaurant)

Greektown is a social and dining district, located on the Near West Side of the United States' city of Chicago, Illinois. Today, Greektown consists mostly of restaurants and businesses, although a cultural museum and an annual parade and festival still remain in the neighborhood. The district can be found along Halsted Street, between Van Buren and Madison Streets.

The Loop (historically Union Loop) is the 1.79-mile (2.88 km) long circuit of elevated rail that forms the hub of the Chicago "L" system in the United States. As of 2012, the branch has served 74,651 passengers every weekday. The Loop is so named because the elevated tracks loop around a rectangle formed by Lake Street (north side), Wabash Avenue (east), Van Buren Street (south), and Wells Street (west). The railway loop has given its name to Chicago's downtown, which is also known as the Loop. Transit began to appear in Chicago in the latter half of the 19th century as the city grew rapidly, and rapid transit started to be built in the late 1880s. When the first rapid transit lines opened in the 1890s, they were independently owned and each had terminals that were located immediately outside of Chicago's downtown, where it was considered too expensive and politically inexpedient to build rapid transit. Charles Tyson Yerkes aggregated the competing rapid transit lines and built a loop connecting them, which was constructed and opened in piecemeal fashion between 1895 and 1897, finally completing its last connection in 1900. Upon its completion ridership on the Loop was incredibly high, such that the lines that had closed their terminals outside of downtown had to reopen them to accommodate the surplus rush-hour traffic. In the latter half of the 20th century, ridership declined and the Loop was threatened with demolition in the 1970s. However, interest in historic preservation occurred in the 1980s, and ridership has stabilized since.

The National Hellenic Museum is the second oldest American institution dedicated to displaying and celebrating the cultural contributions of Greeks and Greek-Americans. Formerly known as the Hellenic Museum and Cultural Center, the National Hellenic Museum is located in Chicago’s Greektown, at the corner of Halsted and Van Buren Streets. The National Hellenic Museum has recently undergone a modernization program that cumulated in the museum moving to its current building in December 2011. The official opening of the NHM took place on December 10th, 2011 and proved to be a marked event within the Greek community of Chicago.Created to promote understanding of the rich cultural traditions of ancient and contemporary Greece, as well as a focus on the Greek-American immigrant experience, the National Hellenic Museum has become a fixture in the Greek Community in Chicago.

The International Tailoring Company Building, also known as White Tower Building, is a historic building in Chicago that was listed on the National Register on April 18, 2008.Designed by architects Mundie & Jensen and constructed in 1915–1916, with a substantial addition completed in 1922. In 1915–1916, when the International Tailoring Company built its ten-story building on Jackson Boulevard, it joined a handful of other businesses that since the 1890s had built and operated massive Chicago clothing factories. Established in 1896, the International Tailoring Company and its founder and president Jacob L. Reiss (1874-1955) rode the wave of clothing factory production. Where sweatshops were portrayed as dirty, cramped, dark, and unsafe, the modern clothing factory exemplified by Mundie & Jensen's design for the International Tailoring Company plant was clean, spacious, brightly illuminated by natural light, and constructed with an eye to worker comfort and safety.It has been used by the School of the Art Institute of Chicago for exhibit space, and, as of 2005 was being converted to residential condos. It is located at 847 W. Jackson Boulevard, which is at the corner of Jackson and Peoria Street, on the historic U.S. Route 66.

The Academy of Music was the name of three theaters in Chicago, Illinois. The first two theaters were located at 83. S. Halsted Street in West Side, Chicago near the intersection of Madison Street and Halstead. They were both destroyed by fire. The first theatre opened in 1872, and after it was destroyed in 1878 the second theatre was quickly built on the same property and opened the same year as the first fire. The second theatre was destroyed by fire in 1880. The third Academy of Music was located at 16 Halsted Street. It opened in 1880 and operated as a legitimate theatre for thirty-five years. In 1915 it became a movie theatre, and continued to operate in that capacity until it closed in 1934. It was demolished in 1936.

Chicago High School (active 1856–1880; demolished 1950) was the first public high school in Chicago, Illinois. After several abortive attempts, the Chicago City Council approved a high school in 1855. John M. Van Osdel and Frederick Baumann designed the building, which opened the next year. In 1860, the coursework was organized into two branches of study. In 1869, the high school established three branch divisions in Chicago where students could take the first-year workload, then apply to finish at the main building, which then became known as Central High School. These branches evolved into full high schools in 1880 and the original Chicago High School was closed. The building was demolished in 1950.

Lexington College was a Catholic women's college located in Chicago, Illinois. The curriculum was focused entirely on hospitality management studies. Originally known as the Lexington Institute of Hospitality Careers, the college opened in 1977 and closed in 2014.

Halsted was a rapid transit station located on the Metropolitan main line of the Chicago "L". It was in existence from 1895 to 1958, when the entire main line was replaced by the Congress Line located in the median of the nearby Eisenhower Expressway. Halsted station in particular was replaced by UIC-Halsted on the Congress Line, which eventually became part of the Blue Line.

Old St. Patrick's Church, also known as St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church and commonly known as Old St. Pat's, is a Roman Catholic parish in Chicago, Illinois. Located at 700 West Adams Street, it has been described as the "cornerstone of Irish culture" in Chicago. The main church building is one of a handful of structures remaining in the city that predate the 1871 Great Chicago Fire, and is the city's oldest standing church building.

The Chicago Virtual Charter School (CVCS) was a state-funded nonprofit K-12 charter school located in Chicago, Illinois in the Near West Side neighborhood. It was also the region's only public virtual school, where students followed a nontraditional model of partial attendance. The school closed on July 1, 2020.

Merit School of Music is a nonprofit organization located in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Merit is dedicated to helping young people transform their lives by removing barriers to a high-quality music education, with nearly 70 percent of students benefitting from need-based financial aid and low-cost instrument rental. Merit enables motivated students, regardless of economic circumstance, to develop their talent and to use music as a springboard for achieving their full personal potential, with virtually 100 percent of conservatory graduates going onto college. Merit School of Music is a member of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, Illinois Arts Alliance, Illinois Alliance for Arts in Education, Chicago Consortium of Community Music Schools, and the Chicago Music Alliance.

Gallery 400 is a not-for-profit arts exhibition space within the College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts at the University of Illinois at Chicago. It was founded in 1983 to exhibit and support art, design and architecture. Over its history Gallery 400 has presented many exhibitions, lectures, and artist commissions. The exhibitions and programs present a broad range of recent developments and aesthetic concerns and have included more than 1,000 artists to date. It's located in Chicago's West Loop neighborhood.
