Powder House Square

The Powder Alarm was a major popular reaction to the removal of gunpowder from a magazine by British soldiers under orders from General Thomas Gage, royal governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay, on September 1, 1774. In response to this action, amid rumors that blood had been shed, alarm spread through the countryside to Connecticut and beyond, and American Patriots sprang into action, fearing that war was at hand. Thousands of militiamen began streaming toward Boston and Cambridge, and mob action forced Loyalists and some government officials to flee to the protection of the British Army. Although it proved to be a false alarm, the Powder Alarm caused political and military leaders to proceed more carefully in the days ahead, and essentially provided a "dress rehearsal" for the Battles of Lexington and Concord seven and a half months later. Furthermore, actions on both sides to control weaponry, gunpowder, and other military supplies became more contentious, as the British sought to bring military stores more directly under their control, and the Patriot colonists sought to acquire them for their own use.

The Z. E. Cliff House is a historic house located at 29 Powderhouse Terrace in Somerville, Massachusetts. Built about 1900 by a prominent local developer for his own use, it is one of the city's finest examples of residential Shingle style architecture. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Havurat Shalom is a small egalitarian chavurah in Somerville, Massachusetts. Founded in 1968, it is not affiliated with the major Jewish denominations. Havurat Shalom was the first countercultural Jewish community and set the precedent for the national havurah movement. Founded in 1968, it was also significant in the development of the Jewish renewal movement and Jewish feminism. Originally intended to be an "alternative seminary", instead it evolved into a "model havurah".Founders and members of Havurat Shalom have included Edward Feld, Merle Feld, Michael Fishbane, Everett Gendler, Arthur Green, Barry Holtz, Gershon Hundert, James Kugel, Alfred A. Marcus, Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, Jim Sleeper, Michael Strassfeld, and Arthur Waskow. Historian Jonathan Sarna has noted that among these members were "the people who would be leading figures in Jewish life in the second half of the 20th century”.

Lyndell's Bakery is a bakery in Ball Square in Somerville, Massachusetts. In December 2007, it celebrated 120 years of operation. Lyndell's is a classic, full-service American bakery, a rare holdout in New England communities.

The John F. Nichols House is a historic house in Somerville, Massachusetts. The 2.5-story wood-frame house was built c. 1890, and is a well preserved Queen Anne Victorian. The house as a prominent corner bay which is topped by a steeply pitched gable roof. There is also a front gable dormer and side shed dormers on what is otherwise a hipped roof. The gable ends are decorated with jigsaw woodwork, as is the front porch.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Saint Clement School, also Saint Clement Junior-Senior High School, was a private, Roman Catholic secondary school in Medford, Massachusetts. It was located in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston.

The Charles H. Lockhardt House is a historic house in Somerville, Massachusetts, United States. Charles H. Lockhardt, a prosperous undertaker in Somerville, built this 2+1⁄2-story wood-frame Queen Anne style house in c. 1890. Its most prominent feature is its turret, a three-story polygonal projection from the southeast corner of the building, which is capped by a finial-topped roof. The property includes a period carriage house, which features a cupola.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

The house at 197 Morrison Avenue in Somerville, Massachusetts is the city's finest example of vernacular Gothic Revival architecture. The two story brick building was built c. 1860, and is now set well back from the street behind a later house. Its notable features include bargeboard decoration in the front gable, which also has a Gothic lancet window, and its elaborate front porch decorations. The house is unusual for its position set well back from the street, since it predates the major development that took place on Morrison Avenue in the 1870s.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Ball Square is a neighborhood primarily in Somerville, Massachusetts, but also extending into Medford, at the intersection of Boston Avenue and Broadway, located between Powder House Square and Magoun Square. It is primarily a residential area with a handful of shops and restaurants along Broadway. Located on the edge of the neighborhood surrounding Tufts University, Ball Square contains a mix of businesses serving the student and academic populations as well as those reflecting the more blue-collar neighborhoods to the east. These establishments include Kelly's Diner, Sound Bites, and Ball Square Cafe, all popular for breakfast; True Grounds, a coffee shop; Taco Party, Lyndell's Bakery; House of Kebab, an Indian restaurant; and Avenue Kitchen and Bar. The Brown School, opened in 1900, is located on Willow Avenue and serves the neighborhood's children from kindergarten to fifth grade. It's the only K-5 school in the Somerville School District. Ball Square was formerly the site of the storied Willow Jazz Club. In the 1990s, a fire destroyed several commercial businesses on Broadway, and as those businesses were replaced, an economic transformation began that continues today, with long-time businesses such as Lyndell's Bakery, which dates to the 19th century, along the same stretch as Ball Square Fine Wines and Liquor, a high-end wine shop, KenkoDo Clinic, an Acupuncture and wellness clinic, Amal Niccoli Salon, Salon Cu and Lindsay Griffin, hair salons to name a few of many businesses. Ball Square is a planned stop on the Green Line as part of the MBTA's anticipated extension of the surface rail line.

Ball Square station is an under-construction light rail station on the MBTA Green Line E branch in the Ball Square neighborhood of Somerville and Medford, Massachusetts. Ball Square will consist of one island platform, which will serve the E branch's two tracks. The station is expected to open in mid-2022 as part of the Green Line Extension.

Q Division Studios is a recording studio located in Somerville, Massachusetts, United States. Founded in 1986, Q Division was originally located at 443 Albany Street in Boston, but moved to its current two-studio facility in 2000. Bands that have recorded at Q Division include Pixies, who recorded their debut album Surfer Rosa at the studio. Other bands and artists who have recorded at the studio include James Taylor, Aimee Mann, Jerry Douglas, Buffalo Tom, Gigolo Aunts, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Dropkick Murphys, Jon Brion, Merrie Amsterburg, YoYo Ma, The Click Five, Al Kooper, Morphine, Graham Parker, Fountains of Wayne, State Radio, Mission of Burma, and Abandoned Pools. Recording Engineers who have worked at Q Division include Mike Denneen, Jon Lupfer, Rich Costey, Steve Albini, Kris Smith, Shane O'Connor, Sean Slade and Paul Kolderie.

The West Somerville Branch Library is a historic library at 40 College Avenue in Somerville, Massachusetts, just outside Davis Square. It is a fine local example of Classical Revival architecture, built in 1909 with funding support from Andrew Carnegie, and was the city's first branch library. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
