Gusana

Gavoi is a comune in central Sardinia (Italy), part of the province of Nuoro, in the natural region of Barbagia. It overlooks the Lake of Gusana.

As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 547 and an area of 19.3 square kilometres (7.5 sq mi).Tiana borders the following municipalities: Austis, Desulo, Ovodda, Sorgono, Teti, Tonara.

Sarule is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Nuoro in the Italian region Sardinia, located about 170 kilometres (110 mi) north of Cagliari and about 15 kilometres (9 mi) southwest of Nuoro. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 1,864 and an area of 52.6 square kilometres (20.3 sq mi). Sarule borders the following municipalities: Mamoiada, Ollolai, Olzai, Orani, Ottana.

Museo Nivola (Nivola Museum in English) in Orani, Sardinia, Italy is an institution devoted to the work of artist Costantino Nivola within the larger context of contemporary art, landscape and living traditions. The museum was established in 1994, a few years after the death of Nivola (1911-1988), a native of Orani, and has been expanding ever since. The permanent collection boasts hundreds of sculptural and graphic pieces by Nivola, who played a unique role in 20th century modernism as an artist who worked closely with architects. Aside from exhibiting Nivola's work, the museum produces temporary exhibitions on a regular basis. These center mainly on the relationship between art, architecture, and landscape, with a special focus on artists and movements that were close to Nivola, whose friends included Le Corbusier, Jackson Pollock, Saul Steinberg, Willem de Kooning, Alexander Calder and many other protagonists of mid-20th century art. Orani sits at an altitude of 526 meters, at the foot of Mount Gonare, in the heart of the Barbagia region. Among the notable archaeological sites in the area are approximately 30 nuraghi and several “tombs of the giants”. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Gonare at the crest of the mountain is of particular interest, as is the natural landscape on the road leading up to it. Orani excels in handicrafts. It is famous for its stonework, carpentry, and metalwork, and for tailors specializing in the use of traditional Sardinian velvet.

Tonara is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Nuoro in the Italian region Sardinia, located about 90 kilometres (56 mi) north of Cagliari and about 35 kilometres (22 mi) southwest of Nuoro. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 2,116 and an area of 52.1 square kilometres (20.1 sq mi).The municipality of Tonara contains the frazioni (subdivisions, mainly villages, and hamlets) Arasulè, Su Pranu, Toneri, Teliseri, and Ilalà (abandoned). Tonara borders the following municipalities: Austis, Belvì, Desulo, Sorgono, and Tiana.

Oniferi (Sardinian: Onieri) is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Nuoro in the Italian region Sardinia, located about 120 kilometres (75 mi) north of Cagliari and about 15 kilometres (9 mi) southwest of Nuoro. Oniferi borders the following municipalities: Benetutti, Bono, Orani, Orotelli. The Oniferi economy is mostly based on animal husbandry. Sights include several Nuragic and pre-Nuragic archaeological sites, such as the Necropolis of Sas Concas.

Sorgono (Sardinian: Sòrgono) is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Nuoro in the Italian region Sardinia, located about 90 kilometres (56 mi) north of Cagliari and about 35 kilometres (22 mi) southwest of Nuoro. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 1,927 and an area of 56.2 square kilometres (21.7 sq mi).Sorgono borders the following municipalities: Atzara, Austis, Belvì, Neoneli, Ortueri, Samugheo, Tiana, Tonara. The novelist D. H. Lawrence visited Sorgono in 1921 and described the town and its inhabitants in Chapter 5 of Sea and Sardinia.

Orgosolo (Sardinian: Orgòsolo) is a comune (municipality) located in the Province of Nuoro, in the autonomous region of Sardinia, at about 110 kilometres (68 mi) north of Cagliari and about 13 kilometres (8 mi) south of Nuoro. The municipality is famous for its murals. These political paintings can be found on walls all over Orgosolo. Since about 1969, the murals reflect different aspects of Sardinia's political struggles but also deal with international issues. Vittorio De Seta's movie Banditi a Orgosolo (1961) focuses on the past way of life in central Sardinia and on the phenomenon of "Banditry" in the region. At one time Orgosolo was known as the "village of the murderers" due to its high crime rate. Bandits of the surrounding mountains used the church door to post notices of death sentence passed on their enemies.
