Waxhaw, North Carolina

The Waxhaws is a geographical region extending beyond both sides of the border between what now is North Carolina and South Carolina, United States. It encompasses the areas currently known as Lancaster, Union and Mecklenburg counties. The name is derived from that of the Indigenous people who first inhabited the landbase, the Waxhaw people. Much of the area is now the territory of the Catawba Indian Nation.

The Waxhaw Historic District is a national historic district located at Waxhaw, Union County, North Carolina. It encompasses 93 contributing buildings, 3 contributing structures, and 1 contributing object in the central business district and surrounding residential sections of Waxhaw. The district developed between about 1888 and 1940 and includes notable examples of Commercial Style, Queen Anne, and Bungalow / American Craftsman style architecture. Notable buildings include the former Post Office (1905), Harris's store (c. 1920), Tyson Store (c. 1911), A.W. Heath Co. Mill (1905), R.J. Belk Company Store (c. 1894), A.W. Heath Company Stores (c. 1898), Weir Building (c. 1900), Plyler Building (c. 1907), Farmer's Ginning & Trading Company (c. 1915), McDonald Hotel (1912), Waxhaw Presbyterian Church (1929), Duncan McDonald House (c. 1888), and Ralph J. Belk House (c. 1885).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

Cuthbertson High School is a moderately sized high school in Waxhaw, North Carolina a part of Union County Public Schools. It was founded in August, 2009 under the administration of the then principal, Robert Jackson. The school was founded by pulling students from other area high schools including Parkwood High School, Marvin Ridge High School and Weddington High School. Its main feeder schools are New Town Elementary and Kensington Elementary. Cuthbertson High School is a recognized Honor School of Excellence in North Carolina. Honors for Cuthbertson High School include NC Accountability Model: Exceeded Growth, Graduation Rates: 98.5% for 2017–18 and UCPS International School: 2010; 2011; 2012; 2013; 2014; 2015The current principal is Jeffery Stout.

Sandy Ridge Township, population 45,672, is one of nine townships in Union County, North Carolina. Sandy Ridge Township is 65.69 square miles (170.1 km2) in size and is located in southwestern Union County. This township contains the towns of Waxhaw, Weddington, Mineral Springs, and Stallings. The villages of Marvin and Wesley Chapel are also located here.

Mineral Springs is a town in Union County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,639 at the 2010 census.

The Pleasant Grove Camp Meeting Ground is a historic Methodist camp meeting national historic district located near Waxhaw, Union County, North Carolina. The district encompasses four contributing buildings and one contributing site. The main building is the arbor that dates to 1830. It is an 80 feet long by 60 feet wide open sided frame structure with a gable roof surround on all four sides by pent roof extensions. Located nearby are the church and former schoolhouse, now used as the preacher's dwelling, and the old cemetery.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

Jackson Township, population 11,012, is one of nine townships in Union County, North Carolina. Jackson Township is 59.14 square miles (153.2 km2) in size and is located in southwest Union County. This township includes the towns of Waxhaw and Mineral Springs and are located on the north side.

Marvin Ridge High School (commonly Marvin, Marvin Ridge, or MRHS) is a public high school in Marvin, North Carolina, USA serving students in grades 9–12. The school is part of the Union County Public School system. The school occupies a two-story building with a full auditorium and fully air-conditioned gym. Admission is based primarily on the location of students' homes and district lines. Marvin Ridge High was ranked 1st among the 300–399 cohort size for having a 99.3 percent graduation rate in North Carolina. It is ranked the 275th best high school in the country in 2017 by U.S. News & World Report.

Weddington High School (WHS) is a public high school located east of Weddington, North Carolina (with a Matthews mailing address) as part of Union County Public Schools. As of August 2020, the school has been operating under the leadership of principal Jeff Kraftson. Weddington's important feeder schools, Weddington Elementary and Weddington Middle, are located on the same campus as the high school. Other feeder schools include Antioch Elementary, in Matthews/Indian Trail, and Wesley Chapel Elementary, in Monroe. WHS mainly serves Weddington, Wesley Chapel and the Union County portion of Matthews. It also has some students from western Monroe.

WOLS is a Spanish-language FM radio station broadcasting at a frequency of 106.1 MHz serving the Charlotte, North Carolina market. Its programming consists of music and other material distributed by "La Raza," the Regional Mexican radio network. While WOLS is licensed to (and identifies its location as) the Union County town of Waxhaw, North Carolina, its studios are actually located in Charlotte. The transmitter site is in Catawba, South Carolina.

Jaars, capitalized as JAARS on some maps, is a census-designated place (CDP) in Union County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 597 at the 2010 census. The region's name comes from JAARS, a non-profit organization that is located there.
