Warabrook was originally a small agricultural base which had a cattleyard and abattoir. Warabrook has the Eucalyptus Circuit Reserve which has a cycle way and children's play equipment.

Its boundaries are the Hunter River to the north, the Main Northern railway line to the south (Waratah station), the railway line to Newcastle Harbour to the east, and open ground to the west.

St Philip's Christian College is a multi-campus independent non-denominational Christian co-educational early learning, primary and secondary day school, located in the Central Coast and Hunter regions of New South Wales, Australia. Newcastle Boys' High School was a government-funded single-sex selective high school, located in Waratah, a suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. The school was active between 1929 and 1976, after which time it became a co-educational non-selective school.

Callaghan College is a large multi-campus government-funded co-educational comprehensive secondary day school, located in the north-western corridor of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. Established on 28 June 2000, the College operates across three campuses, with education for students in Year 7 to Year 10 delivered from both the Wallsend and Waratah campuses; and for students in Year 11 and Year 12 delivered from the Jesmond Senior campus. Before 2020, the Waratah campus operated as a specialist school for technology students. In 2018, across all three campuses, the College had an enrolment of approximately 2,500 students, of whom thirteen percent identified as Indigenous Australians and thirteen percent were from a language background other than English. Across all three campuses, the 2300 students are supported by approximately 300 staff. The College is run and administered by the New South Wales Department of Education. The College Principal is Ms Kylee Owen and each campus has a principal.

Mayfield North is a suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. It is basically an industrial estate, which extends north to the south arm of the Hunter River, west to Tourle Street, and south to Industrial Drive. Originally the estate comprised CSR Chemicals, Titans, Koppers, and part of the BHP Steelworks (No2 Merchant Mill, Rod Mill, Limestone Kiln and Spares Yard). It has officially has population of zero.
