East Lavington

Duncton is a village and civil parish in the District of Chichester in West Sussex, England. The village is in the South Downs 3 miles (5 km) south of Petworth on the A285 road. The civil parish is about 4 miles (6 km) long north – south and less than 1 mile (1.6 km) wide east – west and has a land area of 800 ha (1,977 acres). The southern part of the parish includes part of Duncton Down, which is 682 feet (208 m) high. The 2011 Census recorded 345 people living in 182 households, of whom 177 were economically active. The village has a Church of England parish church, a Roman Catholic church. Duncton has a pub, a village hall and two croquet pitches. The parish includes Burton Park, whose stately home and parish church are about 1⁄2 mile (800 m) east of Duncton village. Duncton Mill at the foot of the South Downs escarpment was powered by a large spring flowing from the chalk strata. A stable flow of water at a constant temperature throughout the year is ideal for its present use as a trout hatchery.

Lavington Common is a 31.2-hectare (77-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest south-west of Petworth in West Sussex. It is a National Trust property.This site has wet and dry heath, acid grassland and woodland. It has a rich community of invertebrates, especially spiders. Common trees in the woods are silver birch, downy birch and oak, while the shrub layer is dominated by bracken and bramble.

Upwaltham is a scattered settlement and civil parish in the South Downs, in the District of Chichester of West Sussex, England. It surrounds a parish church, which is about 5 miles (8 km) south-southwest of Petworth on the A285 road. The parish is about 2+3⁄4 miles (4.4 km) long north – south, up to 1+1⁄4 miles (2 km) wide east – west and has an area of 494 hectares (1,220 acres). The northern part of the parish includes part of North Down, a hill 830 feet (253 m) high. The 2001 Census recorded a parish population of 25 people, living in 10 households. The scattered settlement is in a dry valley. Around the parish church are two farmsteads and two cottages. The barns of one of the farmsteads, Upwaltham House Farm, are now a conference and wedding venue.About 1 mile (1.6 km) south of the church are a few houses at Benges, where the A285 to Chichester leaves the valley. From Benges the parish extends south as far as Jackdine Farm.

Graffham is a village, Anglican parish and civil parish in West Sussex, England, situated on the northern escarpment of the South Downs within the South Downs National Park. The civil parish is made up of the village of Graffham, part of the hamlet of Selham, and South Ambersham. It forms part of the Bury Ward for the purposes of electing a Councillor to Chichester District Council.

Burton Park is a 19th-century country house in the civil parish of Duncton in West Sussex, and is situated 1/2 a mile to the east of the village of Duncton, within its own estate. It is a Grade I listed building, now converted into multiple occupation.

Graffham Common is a 38-hectare (94-acre) nature reserve between Midhurst and Petworth in West Sussex. It is owned and managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust.This former pine plantation is being restored back to heath and grassland by the clearance of pine trees and rhododendrons. Drainage ditches have been blocked to allow the natural restoration of wet heath. Wet seepages provide a habitat for cross-leaved heath, hare’s-tail cottongrass and purple moor-grass.

Barlavington is a small village and civil parish in the Chichester district of West Sussex, England. The village is situated about four miles (6.4 km) south of Petworth, east of the A285 road. At the 2011 Census the population was included in the civil parish of Sutton. The nearest railway station is five miles (8.0 km) northeast of the village, at Pulborough. St Mary's Church was built between 1160 and 1190. Most of the church was built in Early English style. The parish covers an area of 397 hectares (980 acres). According to the 2001 census it had a population of 117 people living in 35 households. Owing to the presence of a retirement home only 36 people were economically active.

Duncton to Bignor Escarpment is a 229-hectare (570-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest west of Pulborough in West Sussex. It is a Special Area of Conservation and Bignor Hill is a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I.

Selham railway station served the village of Selham in the county of West Sussex in England. The station was out in mostly open fields, although a public house was located nearby. The station was on the Pulborough to Midhurst line which was originally part of the London Brighton and South Coast Railway. The station opened after the line (which opened in 1866) on 1 July 1872. The station was closed to passenger services in 1955, but freight was still carried up to May 1963, before the station was closed completely. The line through the station remained open for another year serving Midhurst. The station building is now a private home.

Petworth railway station was a railway station nearly two miles (3 km) from the town of Petworth in West Sussex, England. It was located on the former London, Brighton and South Coast Railway single track Pulborough to Midhurst branch line. It had a single platform, and a passing loop for freight trains, together with a signal box and goods facilities. The line was opened to here on 10 October 1859 and extended westwards to Midhurst in 1866. The main station building was rebuilt in about 1892 and is a wooden 1-storey structure with architectural embellishments. The station was closed to passengers by the Southern Region of British Railways on 5 February 1955 and to freight traffic on 20 May 1966. Some time after this, the station building was converted to a guest house and a number of former Pullman lounge cars converted to camping coaches have been relocated here from Marazion in Cornwall as sleeping accommodation.

Selham is a small village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Graffham, in the Chichester district of West Sussex, England. It lies south of the A272 road 3 miles (4.8 km) east of Midhurst. It is mainly in the parish of Graffham, but partly in that of Lodsworth to the north. In 1931 the parish had a population of 65.

Burton Park SSSI is a 57.7-hectare (143-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest west of Pulborough in West Sussex. A larger area of 63 hectares (160 acres), including Chingford Pond to the west, is designated a Local Nature Reserve called Burton and Chingford Ponds, which is managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust and West Sussex County Council. The site is adjacent to Burton Park, a Grade I listed building. This site comprises a large pond, carr woodland, bog, wet heath and marshy grassland. There is a diverse range of invertebrates including three nationally rare species, the snail Omphiscola glabra and the craneflies Erioptera meijerei and Tipula marginata. The site is also important for its breeding water birds, such as water rails and great crested grebes.
