Klosterneuburg

Bezirk Wien-Umgebung was a district of the state of Lower Austria in Austria. The district comprised four non-contiguous districts on the outer fringes of Vienna: Klosterneuburg and Gerasdorf to the north of the city, Schwechat to its south-east and Purkersdorf on Vienna's western side. Vienna International Airport, the headquarters of Austrian Airlines, and the headquarters of Niki are in the city of Schwechat, in the district.The district existed from 1954 to 2016. In 2017 the municipalities became part of four adjacent districts.

Klosterneuburg Abbey or Monastery (German: Stift Klosterneuburg) is a twelfth-century Augustinian monastery of the Catholic Church located in the town of Klosterneuburg in Lower Austria. Overlooking the Danube, just north of the Vienna city limits at the Leopoldsberg, the monastery was founded in 1114 by Saint Leopold III of Babenberg, the patron saint of Austria, and his second wife Agnes of Germany.The abbey church, dedicated the Nativity of Mary (Maria Geburt), was consecrated in 1136 and remodeled in the Baroque style in the seventeenth century. The impressive monastery complex was mostly constructed between 1730 and 1834. Its foundations, including a castle tower and a Gothic chapel, date back to the twelfth century. Other older buildings still extant within the complex include the chapel of 1318 with Saint Leopold's tomb. From 1634 on, the Habsburg rulers had the facilities rebuilt in the Baroque style, continued by the architects Jakob Prandtauer and Donato Felice d'Allio. The plans to embellish the monastery on the scale of an Austrian Escorial were later resumed by the Neoclassical architect Joseph Kornhäusel, though only small parts were actually carried out. In 1879, the abbey church and monastery were restored according to plans by Friedrich von Schmidt, and the neo-Gothic twin steeples were erected.Klosterneuburg Monastery contains the Verduner Altar, made in 1181 by Nicholas of Verdun. Its three parts comprise 45 gilded copper plates modeled on Byzantine paragons, similar to the Shrine of the Three Kings at Cologne Cathedral. The monastery also contains a museum with a collection of Gothic and Baroque sculptures and a gallery of paintings, including fifteen-panel paintings by Rueland Frueauf from 1505, four Passion paintings from the backside of the Verduner Altar from 1331, and the Babenberg genealogical tree.

The Konrad Lorenz Institute for Evolution and Cognition Research (KLI) is an international center for advanced studies in the life and sustainability sciences. It is a "Home to Theory that Matters" that supports the articulation, analysis, and integration of theories in biology and the sustainability sciences, exploring their wider scientific, cultural, and social significance. The institute is located in Klosterneuburg, near Vienna, Austria. Until 2013, the institute was located in the family mansion of the Nobel Laureate Konrad Lorenz in Altenberg. Lorenz' work laid the foundation for an evolutionary approach to mind and cognition. The institute unites fellows, visiting scholars, students, and external faculty. Through a lecture and seminar series, the KLI also offers a platform for the critical public discussion of current themes in the biosciences. Founded in 1990 by Rupert Riedl, followed by Gerd B. Müller as president of the institute, the KLI is funded by a private trust and receives additional support from the Province of Lower Austria. The institute has close ties with many of the higher education institutions in Vienna and Lower Austria, as well as with a number of international institutions with similar aims.

The Kahlenberg (German pronunciation: [ˈkaːlənˌbɛʁk] ) is a mountain (484 m or 1,588 ft) located in the 19th District of Vienna, Austria (Döbling).

The Kahlenberg Transmitter is a facility for FM- and TV on the Kahlenberg near Vienna. It was established in 1953 and used until 1956 an antenna on the observation tower Stefaniewarte. From 1956 to 1974 a 129-metre-high guyed mast built of lattice steel was used. Since 1974 a 165-metre-high guyed steel tube mast has been used, which is equipped with rooms of technical equipment.

Langenzersdorf (German pronunciation: [laŋˈʔɛnt͡sɐsdɔʁf] ) is a town in the district of Korneuburg in Lower Austria, Austria.

Modul University Vienna (short MU Vienna) is a private university established in 2007 in Vienna, Austria, that focuses on social and economic development. In particular, it focuses on the areas of tourism, new media information technology, sustainability, business management, and public governance.

The Leopoldsberg (German pronunciation: [ˈleːopɔltsˌbɛʁɡ] ; 425 metres [1,394 ft]) is perhaps Vienna’s most famous hill, towering over the Danube and the city. Leopoldberg’s most prominent landmark is the church which stands at the top, and which is clearly visible from Vienna below. Construction of the Leopoldsberg church, dedicated to Saint Leopold, began in 1679; an expansion following a design by Antonio Beduzzi was undertaken 1718–30. Other renovations were to follow. Across the square from the church, on what used to be a tower of the fortification system, a memorial to those Austrians who returned home from captivity after World War II was created in 1948.

Döbling (German pronunciation: [ˈdøːblɪŋ] ) is the 19th district in the city of Vienna, Austria (German: 19. Bezirk, Döbling, Doebling). It is located in the north of Vienna, north of the districts Alsergrund and Währing. Döbling has some heavily populated urban areas with many residential buildings, and borders the Vienna Woods. It includes some of the most expensive residential areas such as Grinzing, Sievering, and Neustift am Walde, and is home to many Heurigen taverns. There are some large Gemeindebauten, including Vienna's most famous, the Karl-Marx-Hof.

The Leopoldsberg church (also church of St. Leopold at Leopoldsberg, German: Leopoldsbergkirche) is a Roman Catholic quasi-parochial church in the Kahlenbergerdorf area of Döbling (the 19th district of Vienna). It is dedicated to Saint Margrave Leopold and is attached to the parish church of Nussdorf.After being closed for a long time for repairs, the church was opened to the public in June 2018.

The Habsburgwarte is a 27 metre-tall tower that stands on Hermannskogel hill in Vienna. It was built by architect Franz von Neumann to resemble a medieval tower. The construction of the Habsburgwarte was funded by the Österreichische Touristenklub (Austrian Tourist Club) to mark the Emperor Franz Joseph I’s 40th jubilee in 1888. It was completed in 1889. In 1972, the tower was listed. Today, it is used as a lookout. On weekends in summer, the Austrian Tourist Club opens the tower to members of the public for an entrance fee. In 1892, the Militärgeographisches Institut (Army Geographic Institute) of Austria-Hungary specified the Habsburgwarte as kilometre zero. A plaque on the viewing platform records this fact. The Habsburgwarte was damaged during World War II. The Energieversorgung Niederösterreich (a provider of electricity, gas and heating in Lower Austria) assisted in the restoration of the tower, in return for which it may make use of the Habsburgwarte as a radio tower.

Korneuburg (German pronunciation: [kɔʁˈnɔʏbʊʁk] ; Central Bavarian: Korneibuag) is a town in Austria. It is located in the state Lower Austria and is the administrative center of the district of Korneuburg. Korneuburg is situated on the left bank of the Danube, opposite the city of Klosterneuburg, and is 12 km northwest of Vienna. It covers an area of 9.71 square km and, as of 2001, there were 11,032 inhabitants. Korneuburg was originally a bank settlement associated with Klosterneuburg under the name Nivenburg. It was first mentioned in 1136, and in 1298 received the right to formal separation from Klosterneuburg. In 1938, the shipyard Korneuburg was integrated into the Hermann-Göring-Werke, and significantly enlarged. In 1941, 16 barracks for Germans, forced laborers and prisoners of war were added. In 1945, the Red Army captured the shipyard.Military campaigns involving the city include the Battle of Vienna, the Thirty Years' War, the French Revolutionary Wars, and the Oil Campaign of World War II. The Korneuburg Shipyard is now the site of a branch of the Museum of Military History, Vienna comprising two patrol boats, Niederösterreich and Oberst Brecht. These were the Austrian Army's last patrol ships on the Danube, and the successors of the KuK Kriegsmarine.
