Ditchling Common

Jacob's Post is a post outside the old Royal Oak pub just inside the north of Ditchling Common to the east of Burgess Hill, in Lewes district, East Sussex, England. It is named after a traveling peddler named Jacob Harris (also known by his Jewish name of Yacob Hirsch) who in 1734, according to local lore, killed the landlord of the Royal Oak pub's wife and a serving maid. He also slashed the landlord in the throat but he survived. After stealing a coat worth ten shillings, Jacob Harris ran north to Turners Hill and stayed at the Cat Inn. The landlord managed to round a party of searchers for Jacob that included soldiers and discovered him at Selsfield House hiding in the chimney by inadvertently flushing him out when they lit the fire. Harris was prosecuted and executed for his crime at Horsham gaol and his body was returned to hang in a gibbet at the northern end of Ditchling Common next to the highway and near the scene of his crime.The post where he hung took on a life of its own as people believed infertility and other ailments could be cured by touching the post. If you got a splinted from the post it was said you would never get toothache. Consequently people tool small pieces of the post when visiting. This continued well into the 19th century despite the original post being replaced by another. A number of ballads have been written about the event. The next recorded Jew in the Brighton area was in 1766.The post used to be visible from the road but the Common here has returned to scrub and has to be accessed via a track that starts from the farm drive or nearby Bankside Farm. The post itself has a metal bird nailed to the top. The Royal Oak pub was demolished for housing in 2017.

Bethel Baptist Chapel is a Strict Baptist place of worship in the village of Wivelsfield in East Sussex, England. The cause was founded in 1763 by members of a chapel at nearby Ditchling; Henry Booker and other worshippers seceded and began to meet at Wivelsfield after hearing a sermon by George Whitefield. Although some members of the new church soon returned to the Ditchling congregation, the cause thrived under Booker's leadership, and the present chapel—a building of "quiet and unassuming elegance" set in its own graveyard—was erected in 1780. It has served the Strict Baptist community continuously since then, and members founded other chapels elsewhere in Sussex during the 18th and 19th centuries. The chapel is a Grade II Listed building.

World's End is a neighbourhood located in Burgess Hill, West Sussex. It is thought that the name arrived with the railway – it was here that the 'up' line met the 'down' line during construction of the Brighton Main Line in what is now the World's End area.

Wivelsfield () village and the larger adjacent village of Wivelsfield Green are the core of the civil parish of Wivelsfield in the Lewes District of East Sussex, England. The villages are 9.3 miles (15.0 km) north of the city of Brighton and Hove. Wivelsfield parish is located on a ridge that divides the watersheds of the Rivers Adur and Ouse. It lies south of Haywards Heath, and east of Burgess Hill, which are both comparative newcomer settlements, owing their existence to the coming of the railway in the 1840s. Wivelsfield is much older and was first mention is in an 8th century charter whilst Bronze Age and Roman finds indicate even earlier origins of settlement in the area.The settlement tended to be small farms often grouped together rather than a central village and that is still marked by the two distinct areas called Wivelsfield and Wivelsfield Green, as well as smaller hamlets lying on the border of the old Haywards Heath to the north, Valebridge Common to the west and Ditchling Common to the south.Despite Wivelsfield being as biodiverse as the best protected places in the Weald, it lies in a landscape without statutory protection and county planners are allowing an eastwards movement of settlements from Burgess Hill.

Wivelsfield railway station is a railway station on the Brighton Main Line in West Sussex, England. Located in northern Burgess Hill, it primarily serves the town's neighbourhoods of World's End and Sheddingdean. The station is 40 miles 52 chains (65.4 km) down the line from London Bridge via Redhill. It is situated between Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill stations on the main line, and between Haywards Heath and Plumpton stations on the East Coastway line, which branches off just south of the station at Keymer Junction. The station is managed by Southern which is one of two companies serving Wivelsfield, the other one being Thameslink. Until May 2018, Gatwick Express also served the station with a single early-morning service each weekday towards London. Despite its name, the station is not located in Wivelsfield village, which actually lies approximately 2.3 miles (3.7 km) to the northeast, in the Lewes District of East Sussex.

All Saints Church is the United Reformed Church in Burgess Hill. Originally a Congregational church, it replaced Burgess Hill's first Congregational chapel in Grove Road. It was registered as Junction Road Church. It is a Classical building with a large portico and columns — an unusual style for such a late construction date (1881). John Betjeman thought it was the Burgess Hill's only decent piece of architecture. The exterior was painted in 1986, and the pews were removed in 2001.

Burgess Hill Girls (previously named Burgess Hill School for Girls) is an independent, girls-only day and boarding school for girls aged between 2½ and 18 years (full boarding is offered from 11 years), founded in 1906 by Miss Beatrice Goode. The school is located in Burgess Hill, West Sussex, having moved to its present location in 1928. The school also has boys attending the nursery.

Burgess Hill ( (listen)) is a town and civil parish in West Sussex, England, close to the border with East Sussex, on the edge of the South Downs National Park, 39 mi (63 km) south of London, 10 mi (16 km) north of Brighton and Hove, and 29 mi (47 km) northeast of the county town, Chichester. It had an area of 3.7 sq mi (9.6 km2) and a population of 30,635 at the 2011 Census, making it the fourth most populous parish in the county (behind Crawley, Worthing and Horsham) and the most populous in the Mid Sussex District. Other nearby towns include Haywards Heath to the northeast and Lewes, the county town of East Sussex, to the southeast. Burgess Hill is just on the West Sussex side of the border dividing the two counties, although parts of the World's End district are across the county boundary in the Lewes district of East Sussex.Burgess Hill is twinned with Schmallenberg in Germany and Abbeville in France.

It is 41 miles 39 chains (66.8 km) down the line from London Bridge via Redhill and is situated between Wivelsfield and Hassocks on the main line. Train services are provided by Southern and Thameslink.

Burgess Hill Town Football Club is an English football club currently playing in the Isthmian League South East Division. The club plays its home games at the More Than Tyres Stadium (Leylands Park) in Burgess Hill, West Sussex.
