The Danelaw (, also known as the Danelagh; Old English: Dena lagu; Danish: Danelagen) was the part of England in which the laws of the Danes held sway and dominated those of the Anglo-Saxons. The Danelaw contrasts with the West Saxon law and the Mercian law. The term is first recorded in the early 11th century as Dena lage. The areas that constituted the Danelaw lie in northern and eastern England, long occupied by Danes and other Norsemen. The Danelaw originated from the invasion of the Great Heathen Army into England in 865, but the term was not used to describe a geographic area until the 11th century. With the increase in population and productivity in Scandinavia, Viking warriors, having sought treasure and glory in the nearby British Isles, "proceeded to plough and support themselves", in the words of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle for 876.Danelaw can describe the set of legal terms and definitions created in the treaties between Alfred the Great, the king of Wessex, and Guthrum, the Danish warlord, written following Guthrum's defeat at the Battle of Edington in 878. In 886, the Treaty of Alfred and Guthrum was formalised, defining the boundaries of their kingdoms, with provisions for peaceful relations between the English and the Vikings. The language spoken in England was affected by this clash of cultures, with the emergence of Anglo-Norse dialects.The Danelaw roughly comprised these contemporary 15 shires: Leicester, York, Nottingham, Derby, Lincoln, Essex, Cambridge, Suffolk, Norfolk, Northampton, Huntingdon, Bedford, Hertford, Middlesex, and Buckingham.

Yorkshire ( YORK-shər, -⁠sheer) is an area of Northern England and an historic county. It includes the ceremonial counties of East Riding of Yorkshire, North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, and West Yorkshire, which are all part of the Yorkshire and the Humber region, and parts of Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Cumbria, and County Durham. Despite no longer being used for administration, Yorkshire retains a strong identity.The historic county was bordered by County Durham to the north, the North Sea to the east, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, and Cheshire to the south, and Lancashire and Westmorland to the west; it was the largest by area in the United Kingdom. The county was subdivided into three ridings – North, East, and West – which from the Middle Ages began to be used for local government functions. Between 1889 and 1974 the ridings were administrative counties. Yorkshire Day is observed annually on 1 August and is a celebration of the general culture of Yorkshire, including its history and dialect. Its name is widely recognised by British institutions, for example in the Royal Yorkshire Regiment of the British Army, in sport, and in the media. The emblem of Yorkshire is a white rose, which was originally the heraldic badge of the British royal House of York. The county is sometimes referred to as "God's own country".

Stockton-on-the-Forest is a village and civil parish in the unitary authority of the City of York in North Yorkshire, England.

Brockfield Hall is a country house in Warthill, east of York in North Yorkshire, England. The hall was built in 1804 for Benjamin Agar, to a design by Peter Atkinson. It is a two-storey building of brick, with a slate roof, and has three bays. It also has a lower two-storey service wing. On the main front, the central, entrance, bay comes further forward. It has a pilastered porch with a balcony above, and the entrance is arched, with double doors. There is a Venetian window to the balcony, while the other windows are all sashes. The central bay of the garden front is bowed, and a single-storey garden room has been added to the left.Inside the house, the entrance hall is circular, with a cast iron staircase rising through it. There is a decorative cornice and frieze, which may be slightly later than 1804. The drawing room and morning room also have early decoration.The house was Grade II listed in 1953, and raised to Grade II* listed in 1987. It was purchased by Martin Fitzalan Howard in 1951, and has since been passed down his family. It contains the largest collection of paintings by the Staithes group of artists. The house is open to the public for one month each year.

The Sand Hutton Light Railway was a minimum gauge estate railway serving the estate of Sir Robert Walker, the Fourth Baronet of Sand Hutton, Yorkshire. It connected the main house with the LNER Warthill Station and the village of Bossall. It replaced the earlier, shorter, 15 in (381 mm) gauge Sand Hutton Miniature Railway that was built in 1914.

Warthill is a village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England, six miles north-east of York and 14 miles south-west of Malton. The village has one public house, The Agar Arms, and a Church of England primary school (established in 1863), with about forty pupils. Warthill is home to St Mary's Church, which was built in the 19th century and is a good example of Victorian Gothic architecture. Brockfield Hall, a Georgian house completed in 1807, is situated nearby. It was built for Benjamin Agar by Peter Atkinson senior who worked in the office of John Carr (architect). Brockfield has an oval entry hall with cantilevered staircase. The house displays fine art and furniture, and mementos associated with the Fitzalan Howard family. There is also an unusual collection of glass walking sticks. The house is rectangular in plan, with a hipped slate roof. The most immediately noticeable feature is a large Venetian window on the first floor which is set in a semi-circular arch of stone panels. Below is an ironwork balcony with stands above the entry porch. The interior serves partly as a display space for paintings by the Staithes group of artists. The hall is now designated as a Grade II* listed building.The village was part of the Ryedale district between 1974 and 2023. It is now administered by North Yorkshire Council.

Holtby is a small village and civil parish in the unitary authority of the City of York in North Yorkshire, England. The population at the 2011 Census was 166. It lies close to the A166 about 5 miles (8 km) east of York.

Strensall Common is 1,430 acres (578.75 ha) of common land to the south-east of the village of Strensall, in the City of York, England. The land is recognised as an SSSI and a Special Area of Conservation, with much of it being owned and maintained by the Ministry of Defence who have a rifle range on its southern edge. Strensall Common is the only known site in England where the butterfly epione vespertaria has been recorded. The common was also noted historically as being a collection site for the thread of the araneus diadematus spider. The thread was used as a graticule in optical instruments.

The A64 is a major road in North and West Yorkshire, England, which links Leeds, York and Scarborough. The A64 starts as the A64(M) ring road motorway in Leeds, then towards York it becomes a high-quality dual carriageway until it is east of the city, where it becomes a single carriageway for most of its route to Scarborough. The road approximates a section of the old Roman road running from Chester to Bridlington, intersecting Ermine Street – the Old North Road – at York.

St Nicholas' Church, Dunnington is a Grade II* listed parish church in Dunnington, a village in the rural south-eastern part of the City of York, in England. The oldest fragments of the church date from the 11th century, with the two-bay nave and lower part of the tower being 12th century. North and south aisles, since replaced, were also added. In the 13th century, the east end of the church was rebuilt as a three-bay chancel is 13th century, with the original piscina and sedilia surviving inside, along with two brackets which now support 19th century sculptures. The upper part of the tower dates from the 15th century. The church is built of a mixture of limestone, sandstone and millstone grit. The church was restored in 1717 and between 1738 and 1740, when the pulpit was replaced. The building was then partly rebuilt between 1839 and 1841, when the aisles were reconstructed, and a north porch was added, becoming the main entrance. The next reconstruction was in 1877, this later work being by C. Hodgson Fowler. In 1930, the north aisle of the chancel was converted into a chapel. Finally, in 1987, a church hall was added.The church's stained glass is 19th and later. The east window, designed by William Wailes, dated from about 1840, but was replaced in 2009 by new glass, designed by Helen Whittaker. In the churchyard are the remains of a stone cross - its base and part of its shaft - which may date from the 14th century.

Dunnington is a village and civil parish in the City of York and ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England. The population of the civil parish was 3,230 at the 2011 Census. The village is approximately 4 miles (6 km) east from York city centre. The parish includes the hamlet of Grimston. The village was historically part of the East Riding of Yorkshire until 1974. It was then a part of the Selby District in North Yorkshire from 1974 until 1996. Since 1996 it has been part of the City of York unitary authority.

St Mary's Church is the parish church of Gate Helmsley, a village east of York and west of Stamford Bridge, in North Yorkshire. The oldest parts of the church date from the 13th century, while the west tower was added in the 15th century. It was heavily restored from 1885 to 1886, with a new chancel added, and the eastern half of the nave rebuilt. Stained glass was added between 1890 and 1910, designed by Ward and Hughes. The church was Grade II* listed in 1953. The church is built of sandstone, with a Welsh slate roof. It has a three-bay nave and a two-bay chancel, with a south aisle and north chapel. At the west end is a three-stage tower, which includes a three-light Perpendicular window in the second stage, two windows in the belfry, and a battlement. Most of the windows in the body of the church are 19th century, although there is a moved 13th century lancet window in the north chapel. In the porch is a 12th-century capital, which has been reused as a stoup. The font is 13th century and has an octagonal bowl. There are three bells, cast by John Warner in 1889, and the organ was designed by Abbott and Smith in 1913.
