The Canton of Lamentin is a canton in the Arrondissement of Basse-Terre on the island of Guadeloupe. Its population was 16,573 in 2017.

The Canton of Baie-Mahault is a former canton in the Arrondissement of Basse-Terre on the island of Guadeloupe. It had 29,976 inhabitants (2012). It was disbanded following the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015. The canton comprised the commune of Baie-Mahault.

Baie-Mahault (French pronunciation: [bɛ ma.o]; Guadeloupean Creole: Bémao) is a commune in the overseas department and region of Guadeloupe, France. It is the second most populated commune of Guadeloupe, after Les Abymes. The extensive industrial zone of Jarry in Baie-Mahault is by far the most industrialized commune in the islands and the largest industrial park in the Lesser Antilles. It is part of the urban area of Pointe-à-Pitre, the largest metropolitan area in Guadeloupe, located in the northwest. The inhabitants of Baie-Mahault are called Baie-Mahaultiens.

The siege of Guadeloupe took place from March to May 1703 during the War of the Spanish Succession, when an English expeditionary force led by Christopher Codrington landed on Guadeloupe in the French West Indies, and laid siege to the capital of Basse-Terre. Charles Auger, the French governor, received reinforcements from Martinique led by Nicolas de Gabaret. The latter opted for a Fabian strategy and scorched earth tactics, destroying resources and Fort St Charles in the process. A lack of supplies and heavy losses from disease forced the English to lift the siege in May.

The Lézarde is a river of Guadeloupe. 25.4 kilometres (15.8 mi) in length, it is one of the most important rivers in Guadeloupe, which flows into the town of Petit-Bourg and into the Caribbean Sea on the east coast of the island. It bears its name from the way it winds between rocks and the rainforest. The source of the river is in Merwart, at 564 metres (1,850 ft) above sea level, near Icaques, in the municipality of Petit-Bourg. There are sugarcane plantations in the vicinity.The river is known for its 10 metres (33 ft) waterfall, known in French as Saut de la Lézarde, which lies in Guadeloupe National Park. It is a significant local tourist attraction.

The Battle of Guadeloupe or the Action of 21–22 December 1779 was a naval engagement that took place off the French island of Guadeloupe in the Caribbean during the American Revolutionary War between three Royal Navy ships and three French Navy frigates. The Royal Navy under Joshua Rowley sighted and promptly chased the French frigates, all of which were captured after a brief fight.

Petit-Bourg (French pronunciation: [pəti buʁ]; Guadeloupean Creole: Tibou, Ti Bou) is the seventh-largest commune in the French overseas department of Guadeloupe. It is located on the east side of the island of Basse-Terre, and is part of the metropolitan area of Pointe-à-Pitre, the largest metropolitan area in Guadeloupe. It has many tourist attractions: the Cascade aux Ecrevisse (waterfall), the National Park of Guadeloupe, the Saut de la Lézarde (waterfall), as well as the Kassaverie (cassava/manioc factory) located downtown.

The Leeward Islands moist forests ecoregion (WWF ID: NT0134) covers the forested areas of the Leeward Islands on the northeastern edge of the Caribbean Sea, stretching from the Virgin Islands in the west to Guadeloupe to the southeast. The forested areas are typically in the core interior of the islands, and at the higher elevations of the volcanic islands. Non-forested lower elevations in the region receive less rainfall and are typically semi-arid. A notable feature of the ecoregion is its position in the main hurricane track. The frequent damage to trees produces in many places an uneven forest canopy, and an opening of the canopy that allows more pre-climax trees to grow.
