Petit-Bourg

The Canton of Petit-Bourg is a canton in the Arrondissement of Basse-Terre on the island of Guadeloupe.

The Lézarde is a river of Guadeloupe. 25.4 kilometres (15.8 mi) in length, it is one of the most important rivers in Guadeloupe, which flows into the town of Petit-Bourg and into the Caribbean Sea on the east coast of the island. It bears its name from the way it winds between rocks and the rainforest. The source of the river is in Merwart, at 564 metres (1,850 ft) above sea level, near Icaques, in the municipality of Petit-Bourg. There are sugarcane plantations in the vicinity.The river is known for its 10 metres (33 ft) waterfall, known in French as Saut de la Lézarde, which lies in Guadeloupe National Park. It is a significant local tourist attraction.

The Canton of Goyave is a former canton in the Arrondissement of Basse-Terre on the island of Guadeloupe. It had 11,234 inhabitants (2012). It was disbanded following the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015. It consisted of two communes, which joined the canton of Petit-Bourg in 2015.

The siege of Guadeloupe took place from March to May 1703 during the War of the Spanish Succession, when an English expeditionary force led by Christopher Codrington landed on Guadeloupe in the French West Indies, and laid siege to the capital of Basse-Terre. Charles Auger, the French governor, received reinforcements from Martinique led by Nicolas de Gabaret. The latter opted for a Fabian strategy and scorched earth tactics, destroying resources and Fort St Charles in the process. A lack of supplies and heavy losses from disease forced the English to lift the siege in May.

The Canton of Baie-Mahault is a former canton in the Arrondissement of Basse-Terre on the island of Guadeloupe. It had 29,976 inhabitants (2012). It was disbanded following the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015. The canton comprised the commune of Baie-Mahault.

The arrondissement of Pointe-à-Pitre is an arrondissement of France in the Guadeloupe department in the Guadeloupe region. It has 14 communes. Its population is 204,900 (2016), and its area is 774.1 km2 (298.9 sq mi).

Pointe-à-Pitre (French pronunciation: [pwɛ̃tapitʁ]; Guadeloupean Creole: Pwentapit, [pwɛ̃tapit], or simply Lapwent, [lapwɛ̃t]) is the second most populous commune of Guadeloupe (after Les Abymes). Guadeloupe is an overseas region and department of France located in the Lesser Antilles, of which it is a sous-préfecture, being the seat of the Arrondissement of Pointe-à-Pitre. Although Pointe-à-Pitre is not Guadeloupe's administrative capital (that distinction goes to Basse-Terre), it is nonetheless the region's economic capital. The inhabitants are called "Pointois". In 2018, it had a population of 15,410 in the city (commune) of Pointe-à-Pitre proper and 250,952 inhabitants in the urban unit Pointe-à-Pitre–Les Abymes. It is part of the metropolitan area of Les Abymes. Pointe-à-Pitre International Airport, Guadeloupe's main international airport, is located 3 km (1.9 mi) north of downtown Pointe-à-Pitre in the commune of Les Abymes. Harry Durimel is the current mayor of Pointe-à-Pitre.

Baie-Mahault (French pronunciation: [bɛ ma.o]; Guadeloupean Creole: Bémao) is a commune in the overseas department and region of Guadeloupe, France. It is the second most populated commune of Guadeloupe, after Les Abymes. The extensive industrial zone of Jarry in Baie-Mahault is by far the most industrialized commune in the islands and the largest industrial park in the Lesser Antilles. It is part of the urban area of Pointe-à-Pitre, the largest metropolitan area in Guadeloupe, located in the northwest. The inhabitants of Baie-Mahault are called Baie-Mahaultiens.
