Stoke Newington

New Stoke Newington Shul is a Masorti Jewish congregation, located in Stoke Newington in the Borough of Hackney, London, England, in the United Kingdom. The congregation is led by its inaugural rabbi, Roni Tabick, appointed in 2015. The community was established in 2007 as the Haringey/Stoke Newington Masorti Group. Services are held weekly in local community centres and, as of April 2024, the congregation did not have its own synagogue.

The Crimes Town Gallery in Stoke Newington ran between July 2007 and March 2010. The gallery was run by Gavin Toye and Ben Newton who are both artists. It existed in the Sea Cadets building on Stoke Newington High St. In May 2008 Toye and Newton staged "Walpurgisnacht" at their gallery, a group show featuring artists such as Cathy Lomax, James Unsworth and Sarah Sparkes. Walpurgisnacht is traditionally the biggest Witches Sabbath of the year, the time when the forces of the supernatural meet with the mortal world. This show was previewed in the Guardian Guide by Jessica Lack. In June 2008 guest curator Harry Pye organised a group show called, "Poetic Licence". This exhibition featured sixteen artists including John Moseley, Barry Thompson, and Edward Ward. Each of the show's contributors made a painting or drawing that was inspired by their love of a favourite poem.

Stoke Newington Church Street is a road in north London of the borough of Hackney. The road links Green Lanes (A105) in the west to Stoke Newington High Street (the A10, formerly Ermine Street), in the east. Stoke Newington is one of the villages swallowed by the growth of London in the 19th century, and Church Street retains some of this neighbourhood feel, with many restaurants, pubs, and independent (non-chain) shops.

The Rose and Crown is a Grade II listed public house at 199 Stoke Newington Church Street, Stoke Newington, Hackney, London, N16 9ES. It was built in 1930–32 for Truman's Brewery, and designed by their in-house architect A. E. Sewell.It was Grade II listed in 2015 by Historic England.

St Mary, Stoke Newington is a parish church in Stoke Newington, London Borough of Hackney. Designed in the Gothic Revival version of the Decorated style by George Gilbert Scott and completed in 1858, it replaced a medieval and 16th century church, now an arts venue, and serves what remains of the ancient parish of Stoke Newington after other parishes were split from it in 1849, 1873, 1883 and 1892.The design was loosely based on that of Salisbury Cathedral. It is Grade II* listed. The first vicar was Thomas Jackson, who, as a young rector, was attracting congregations from all over London by his reputation as a preacher. The church's steeple, however, was not completed until 1890, by Scott's son John Oldrid Scott, which led to a humorous rhyme being composed: "Stoke Newington's a funny placeWith lots of funny people;Thomas Jackson built a churchBut could not build a steeple."A restoration of St Mary's was undertaken under Nugent Cachemaille-Day after the Second World War. It was Grade II* listed on 1 September 1953.

Abney Park Chapel, is a Grade II Listed chapel, designed by William Hosking and built by John Jay that is situated in Europe's first wholly nondenominational cemetery, Abney Park Cemetery, London. Opened in May, 1840, it was the first nondenominational cemetery chapel in Europe (and probably the world – since the chapel at Mount Auburn was a later addition). It helped pioneer the early use of the Dissenting Gothic building style, and encouraged renewed interest in the careful blending of earlier styles. It was primarily the work of a small design team consisting of George Collison II (acting as client for the cemetery founders, with a passion for Mount Auburn Cemetery near Boston, and it is said, Beverley Minster which dominated the skyline in his ancestral town); William Hosking (architect and civil engineer with an interest in Egyptology, antiquities, and architectural writing and scholarship); the builder John Jay, and George Loddiges (botanical scientist and horticulturalist primarily concerned with the setting of Abney Park Chapel, including its nearby rosarium and a collection of American plants on the Chapel Lawn). The chapel's first minister was the Rev. John Jefferson, who officiated for more than a quarter of a century.

Abney Park is in Stoke Newington, London, England. It is a 13-hectare (32-acre) park dating from just before 1700, named after Lady Abney, the wife of Sir Thomas Abney, Lord Mayor of London in 1700 and one of the first directors of the Bank of England and associated with Dr Isaac Watts, who laid out an arboretum. In the early 18th century it was accessed via the frontages and gardens of two large mansions: her own manor house (Abney House) and Fleetwood House. Both fronted onto Church Street in what was then a quiet mainly Nonconformist (non-Anglican) village. In 1840, the grounds were turned into Abney Park Cemetery, where 200,000 people were buried. Abney Park now serves mainly as a nature reserve.
