Beckton Gas Works

Beckton railway station was a railway station in Beckton, London originally owned by the Gas Light and Coke Company, to serve the (then) recently built Beckton Gas Works. The line was opened for freight in 1872 and to passengers in 1874. It was leased to the Great Eastern Railway from 1874.

Beckton is a suburb in east London, England, located 8 miles (12.9 km) east of Charing Cross and part of the London Borough of Newham. Adjacent to the River Thames, the area consisted of unpopulated marshland known as the East Ham Levels in the parishes of Barking, East Ham, West Ham and Woolwich. The development of major industrial infrastructure in the 19th century to support the growing metropolis of London caused an increase in population with housing built in the area for workers of the Beckton Gas Works and Beckton Sewage Treatment Works. The area has a convoluted local government history and has formed part of Greater London since 1965. Between 1981 and 1995 it was within the London Docklands Development Corporation area, which caused the population to increase as new homes were built and the Docklands Light Railway was constructed.

Beckton Depot is the primary railway maintenance depot for the Docklands Light Railway (DLR).

Gallions Reach DLR station is a station on the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) in the Royal Docks area of east London. It serves the recent residential developments around Royal Albert Dock. The station is located on the DLR's Beckton branch, between Cyprus and Beckton stations. It is in Travelcard Zone 3. The crossover junction north of the station, which is normally used for trains from the west going to Beckton DLR depot, can also be used for trains from Beckton and Poplar to reverse. This is the easternmost station on the DLR, as Beckton is actually further west. Similar to other stations on the Beckton branch, the platforms have not been extended to accommodate 3-car trains, with selective door operation being used instead.

The Docklands Light Railway extension to Dagenham Dock was a proposed extension of the Docklands Light Railway to Dagenham Dock in East London, to serve the Barking Riverside development and the wider Thames Gateway area. First proposed in 2003, it was anticipated that the project could be completed and open for use by 2017, at a cost of around £750m. In November 2008, the Mayor of London Boris Johnson announced that due to financial constraints the extension, along with a number of other transport projects, had been cancelled. The Barking Riverside development is now served by an extension of the London Overground to a new station at Barking Riverside which opened in July 2022. Costing around £325m, the Overground extension cost around half as much as the DLR extension.

The 1974 Tower of London bombing happened on 17 July 1974 with the explosion of a 10-14 pound bomb in the White Tower of the Tower of London. The blast left one person dead and injured 41 people, with many having lost limbs and suffering severe facial injuries. The victim who lost her life was Dorothy Household. At the time the Tower was busy with tourists. A dozen of the injuries were children. A scaffolding company working on the tower when the bomb detonated were able to act immediately to form the evacuation, ensuring the wounded were taken out of the building to safety and could gain urgent medical attention. The bomb was placed next to a wooden carriage of an 18th-century bronze cannon inside the Mortar Room. The gun carriage was destroyed.No group ever claimed responsibility for the attack, but it was widely believed the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) was behind it. A month before the bomb, the IRA bombed the Houses of Parliament.

Manor Way was a railway station on East Ham Manor Way, south of Beckton in east London, on the London & St. Katharine Docks Company's line. It opened in November 1880 between Central and Gallions stations on the Gallions branch of the line, and was re-sited to the east side of the Manor Way in 1887. Manor Way was sparingly used by passenger services, which ceased in 1940 after wartime bombing, and the goods line closed with the subsequent closure of the Royal Docks. With the redevelopment of the Docklands region in the 1980s and 1990s, the line was replaced in 1994 by the Docklands Light Railway extension to Beckton. No trace of the station remains today (the University of East London's Cyprus campus lies on the original 1880 site), although Gallions Reach DLR station is 200 yards (180 m) north-east of the site.

Gallions Reach Shopping Park is a major out-of-town retail park in Beckton, east London, England. Located on Armada Way beside the River Thames, Gallions Reach is the largest retail park in London and the M25, containing 34 units in an area of 324,000 square feet.

Cyprus is an area of Beckton in the Docklands area of the London Borough of Newham. It is located west of Beckton proper and north of the eastern end of the Royal Albert Dock.

Beckton is the eastern terminus of the Beckton branch of the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) in the Docklands area of east London. It is in Travelcard Zone 3.

The University of East London Docklands Campus is a campus of the University of East London (UEL) situated in the Docklands area of east London. The campus opened in 1999. It is one of two campuses in UEL, the other being the Stratford Campus. The campus is adjacent to the Royal Albert Dock, closed to commercial shipping since the 1980s and now largely used as a water sports centre and rowing course, see London Regatta Centre. The Cyprus station of the Docklands Light Railway is directly connected to the pedestrian spine of the campus, and offers links to Canary Wharf and central London. London City Airport is directly opposite the campus, on the other side of the Royal Albert Dock. The distinctive rounded halls of residence buildings can be seen from across the dock. Docklands was London's first new university campus to be built in over half a century. The Business School will incorporate the Petchey Centre for Entrepreneurship, named in honour of its benefactor, entrepreneur Jack Petchey.

Gallions was the name of two distinct railway stations that adjoined the River Thames by Gallions Reach in Beckton, east London.
