Johannesgränd

Packhusgränd (Swedish: Warehouse Alley) is an alley in Gamla stan, the old town of Stockholm, Sweden. Stretching west from Skeppsbron to Österlånggatan, it forms a parallel street to Johannesgränd and Tullgränd. In 1686, the city bought a site on the south side of the alley to accommodate the customs department, and by the end of that century the latter had the warehouse built which gave the alley its name. The alley was formerly known as Urbansgränden (Urbanus grandhen (1606), "The Alley of Urban") after Urban Michelsson who had an estate here in the late-16th century. Its present name first appears as Packhus gr[änd] in 1733.The area was being used as a berth by the 13th century when the waterfront was located much further east than today, and a medieval harbour, known as Koggahamnen ("The Cog Harbour"), and a quay, Koggabron ("The Cog Bridge"), was also found here as excavations have shown. During the 15th and 16th centuries, a section of the city wall along with two of its towers were found just south of the alley. The customs house on Skeppsbron, built in the 1780s, replaced the warehouse mentioned above.The National Property Board Project Unit is located at number 7. Three rooms and a kitchen, 77 m2, in the alley was as of 2007 offered for close to SEK 4 million (~400.000 Euro).

Pelikansgränd is an alley in Gamla stan, the old town of Stockholm, Sweden, connecting Gaffelgränd to Österlånggatan. It forms a parallel street to Ferkens Gränd, Lilla Hoparegränd, Gaffelgränd, and Johannesgränd. The alley appears in historical records as Lilla S:t Johannes gränd in 1664, Pilicans Gränden around 1700, and Pelekans gr[änd] in 1733. In the basement of the building still present on 39, Österlånggatan, constructed by a man named Hans Georg Cron who bought the site in 1664, was an inn called Pelikan ("Pelican"), an establishment which gave its name to both the building and the street. A noteworthy portal of historical interest is found on number 3.Like most of the structures along the eastern waterfront, the buildings in the alley were built on garbage and landfills, and, as unveiled in connection with excavations in the 1940s and 1950s, 5–6 metres long poles pushed vertically through the layers during the 15th century, are today leaning some 20 degrees towards the water, thus indicating the area have been sliding eastward by some 2–3 metres and sinking by at least 1.5 metres.The oldest archaeological traces underlying the area are the remains of a landing stage found close to today's Österlånggatan, revealing that it was first settled in the late-13th and early-14th centuries. The oldest historical evidence mentions two stone houses on Österlånggatan flanking an alley leading down to a bulwark by the water demolished in 1430. The location of the bulwark can still be seen at the border between the properties south of the alley.An archaeological investigation in 1997–1998, showed the storehouse on number 1 dates from 1700, and the building east of it probably from the same period.

Lilla Hoparegränd is an alley in Gamla stan, the old town of Stockholm, Sweden. Passing between Skeppsbron and Österlånggatan it forms a parallel street to Ferkens Gränd, Gaffelgränd, Pelikansgränd and Johannesgränd. The street appears in historical records as Wargzfrenden in 1550, Warge Grenden in 1646, Vargsgränden during the 16th-17th centuries and finally as Lilla Hopare gr. in 1771. Why the alley was originally called Varggränd ("Wolf Alley") is not known, however, Varg is still a common proper name in Sweden and might refer to an individual associated with the alley. The present name refers to a Michel Hoper or Hopare. Hoper is of Dutch or Frisian origin and means hooper (e.g. maker of barrels).

Gaffelgränd is an alley in Gamla stan, the old town of Stockholm, Sweden, connecting Skeppsbron to Lilla Hoparegränd and Pelikansgränd, both of which are leading to Österlånggatan. It is a parallel street to Ferkens Gränd, Lilla Hoparegränd, Pelikansgränd, and Johannesgränd.

Ferkens Gränd (Swedish: Alley of Ferken) is an alley in Gamla stan, the old town of Stockholm, Sweden, connecting Skeppsbron to Österlånggatan. It forms a parallel street to Drakens gränd, Lilla Hoparegränd, Pelikansgränd, and Gaffelgränd. In appears in historical records as Ferkens grändh in 1619, Farkens grändh in 1621, and Bredgränd (?).The alley derives its name from a simple restaurant[1] in the early 17th century found in the eastern end of the alley. It was called Farken or Ferken, a name derived from the German word Farch or Ferkel meaning 'pig', and it probably had a sign displaying a pig. A Leuisa i Farken ("Louise in the Fark") mentioned in 1602, was married to a Michill Wossin, who in June 1605 was allowed to run the tavern by King Charles IX. The establishment was however declared unfit in 1687 and the building demolished a few years later.

Österlånggatan (Swedish for 'Eastern Long Street') is a street in Gamla stan, the old town of Stockholm, Sweden. Stretching southward from Slottsbacken to Järntorget, it forms a parallel street to Baggensgatan and Skeppsbron. Major sights include the statue of Saint George and the Dragon on Köpmanbrinken and the restaurant Den Gyldene Freden on number 51, established in 1722 and mentioned in Guinness Book of Records as one of the oldest with an unaltered interior.

Tullgränd (Swedish: "Customs Alley") is an alley in Gamla stan, the old town of Stockholm, Sweden, connecting Skeppsbron to Österlånggatan. It forms a parallel street to Packhusgränd and Norra Bankogränd. The alley appears in historical records as Tollhuus grenden in 1626, stora Tullhus gränden in 1693, Store Siötullsgränden in 1704, Stora Tull gr[änd] in 1733, and finally as Tullgränd in 1885. The name is derived from Tullhuset ("the Customs Building") located in the block north of the alley in 1686, and the warehouse built in the 1780s. By the early 18th century, the alley was known as Solgränden ("The Sun Alley") after the tavern Lilla Solen ("The Small Sun") which was located there (see also Packhusgränd and Solgränd.)

Drakens Gränd is an alley in Gamla stan, the old town of Stockholm, Sweden. Stretching from Skeppsbron to Österlånggatan, it forms a parallel street to Stora Hoparegränd and Ferkens Gränd. It appears in historical records as Bredgränd (?), brede gränden (?), Makelerens gränd (17th century, after a Jacob Mac Leer), Bergsgränd (1686), Drakens gr[änd] (1728), Skultans gränd (?)The alley is named after the tavern Draken ("The Dragon") once found in the western end of the street. During the 1660s it was owned by a Melchior Schipman; in 1682 bought by Jöran Berg and renamed Förgyllda Draken ("Gilded Dragon"); and finally discontinued after the latter's death in 1722.The proletarian author Erik Asklund (1908–1980) wrote the novel Drakens gränd in 1965 as part of a trilogy.Drakens gränd is also the name of a company owned by King Carl XVI Gustav (1946-). The company appeared in Swedish media in early 2006, as a property in the alley owned by the king featured in transactions for which the king was accused of tax avoidance.

Skeppsbron (Swedish: "The Ship's Bridge") is both a street and a quay in Gamla stan, the old town of Stockholm, capital of Sweden, stretching from the bridge Strömbron in front of the Royal Palace southward to Slussen. The quay Skeppsbrokajen runs along the street. Södra/Norra Benickebrinken are two sloping streets in Gamla stan, in the old town in central Stockholm, Sweden, stretching from Österlånggatan up to Svartmangatan.

The Black Friars' Monastery, Svartbrödraklostret, also called the convent of Stockholm, was a Dominican monastery on the island of Stadsholmen (City Island) in central Stockholm, founded by King Magnus IV in 1336 when he donated a plot of land located in the southern part of Stadsholmen to the Black Friars. By order of Gustav Vasa the monastery was demolished in 1547, but some of the vaults are still preserved and can be visited. Today Svartmangatan (Blackman Street), which led down to the monastery, is still reminiscent of the Black Friars' era.
