The opening ceremony of the 1972 Summer Olympics took place on the afternoon of Saturday, 26 August 1972, at the Olympiastadion in Munich, West Germany. Officially opened by West German President Gustav Heinemann, the ceremony marked the beginning of the Games of the XX Olympiad.
