Third Floor Gallery was an independent charitable photography gallery in Cardiff Bay, Wales. It opened in 2010 and predominantly featured documentary photography, often premiering new work with the direct involvement of the photographers. It closed in 2016.Third Floor Gallery was set up and initially run by its founding trustees, photographers Maciej Dakowicz and Joni Karanka, and later photographer Bartosz Nowickii, with help from volunteers. It continued to be self-run with volunteer staff and was self-financed through various grassroots sources. It was noted for its use of social networking for engaging with visitors and volunteers at a time when that was not common place for galleries.Notable photographers that exhibited at Third Floor Gallery include Martin Parr, David Hurn, Tom Wood, Chris Steele-Perkins, Larry Fink, Mark Cohen, John Bulmer, Rob Hornstra, Simon Roberts, Peter Dench, Ewen Spencer, Ken Grant and Vanessa Winship.

Empire House, 54 Mount Stuart Square, is a former company headquarters building in Butetown, Cardiff, Wales. Completed in 1926, the building was designed by Ivor Jones and Percy Thomas. Cadw considers it "the best South Wales example of inter-war, Neo-Georgian architecture". Empire House is a Grade II* listed building. After a period of near dereliction, it was converted to apartments in the early 21st century.

Butetown (or The Docks, Welsh: Tre-biwt) is a district and community in the south of the city of Cardiff, the capital of Wales. It was originally a model housing estate built in the early 19th century by The 2nd Marquess of Bute, for whose title the area was named. Commonly known as "Tiger Bay", this area became one of the UK's first multicultural communities with people from over 50 countries settled here by the outbreak of the First World War, working in the docks and allied industries. Some of the largest communities included the Somalis, Yemenis and Greeks, whose influence still lives on today. A Greek Orthodox church still stands at the top of Bute Street. It is known as one of the "five towns of Cardiff", the others being Crockherbtown, Grangetown, Newtown and Temperance Town. The population of the ward and community taken at the 2011 census was 10,125. It is estimated that the Butetown's population increased to 14,094 by 2019.

The Craft in the Bay Gallery is an exhibition and craft retail area located at the south end of Lloyd George Avenue, Cardiff Bay. It was designed by the architect Chris Elford. It is operated by a charitable arts organisation, The Makers Guild in Wales. The gallery is opposite the Wales Millennium Centre and close to the Welsh Assembly Building. The building consists of the relocated and refurbished Grade II listed “D” Shed, previously an industrial warehouse located next to Bute East Dock.

Cardiff Bay railway station (Welsh: Bae Caerdydd), formerly Cardiff Bute Road, is a station serving the Cardiff Bay and Butetown areas of Cardiff, Wales. It is the southern terminus of the Butetown branch line 1 mile (1.5 km) south of Cardiff Queen Street. Only one platform is now in use. The station building lies on Bute Street, although the rest of the station remains visible from the nearby Lloyd George Avenue. For various reasons, including it being the origin of the first steam-powered passenger train service in Wales, the station is a Grade II* listed building.Passenger services are provided by Transport for Wales. The station is due to close by December 2023, when the new Cardiff Bay station opens.

Mount Stuart Square is a residential and commercial square in Cardiff, Wales. It is located in the Butetown area of the city. Originally developed in the late 1800s as a residential location for nearby dock workers, it quickly became a centre for upscale residential properties which revolved around the main square. By 1900, commercial activity had taken its place, dominated by the Coal Exchange, which occupied the once open central space. The square contains a high concentration of listed buildings, which represent a range of architectural styles and some of Cardiff's finest examples of late 19th and early 20th Century commercial architecture. Mount Stuart Square area was designated a Conservation Area in July 1980.

The Point was a music venue in Cardiff Bay, Cardiff, Wales, located in the deconsecrated Grade II-listed St Stephen's Church.

All Souls Chapel was a large chapel which stood at Cardiff Docks, near the present Roald Dahl Plass.

The Coal Exchange (also known as the Exchange Building) is a historic building in Cardiff, Wales. It is designed in Renaissance Revival style. Built in 1888 as the Coal and Shipping Exchange to be used as a market floor and office building for trading in coal in Cardiff, it later became a hub of the global coal trade. It is situated in Mount Stuart Square in Butetown, and was for many years the hub of the city's prosperous shipping industry. It later became a music venue, with offices remaining in use in the West Wing, before being closed indefinitely in 2013 due to building safety issues. Following a series of proposals to demolish the building, Cardiff Council purchased the Coal Exchange. In 2016 the property was sold to the Liverpool-based hospitality company Signature Living, which began a programme of restoration and conversion of the building into a hotel. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Liverpool-based company Signature Living entered administration leaving the future of the building in limbo. During the summer of 2020, the Coal Exchange Hotel was saved by Cardiff-based company Eden Grove Properties, the company saved 56 jobs and reopened the hotel during September 2020 with no affiliation to the former owners Signature Living. After just two weeks the hotel was forced to close again inline with the firebreak lockdown in Wales to help stop the spread of COVID-19. The hotel will reopen during 2021 and the new owners are in the latter stages of completing the legal documents with the relevant companies to commence work on the rear and underground section of the building with hopes to complete the building towards the end of 2021 start of 2022. Once fully completed the hotel will host 146 bedrooms, an on-site restaurant and bar, spa, gym, learning zone, conference rooms and the Grand Hall wedding venue.

The Welsh Industrial and Maritime Museum was located in Butetown, Cardiff, Wales, prior to the Cardiff Bay regeneration in the late 1990s. The museum formed part of the National Museums and Galleries of Wales, now known as Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales and the first stage opened in 1977, and it closed just 22 years later in 1998. Construction of the museum began in October 1974. Exhibits included cars, a bus and tram, a lighthouse, a figurehead from HMS Hamadryad, the Sea Alarm tugboat and a replica of Richard Trevithick's 1803 locomotive, Pen-y-Darren. A permanent exhibition described the history of the docks and coal mining in South Wales.Dr Geraint Jenkins was curator of the museum from 1978 until 1987.The museum closed on 1 June 1998 to make way for the new Mermaid Quay shopping development. Its exhibits were redistributed to other museums and the Sea Alarm was scrapped. A new location for a similar museum, in Swansea, was not chosen until two years after the closure. The National Waterfront Museum opened in Swansea in 2005.

West Yard Works was the Taff Vale Railway's locomotive repair and construction factory. It was located in Cardiff between Bute Street and the Glamorganshire Canal. A small engine shed with room for one locomotive and a repair shop was built there when the railway was first constructed in 1839, but much of the work had to be carried out in the open air.In 1846 Henry Clement was appointed as the railway's Resident Engineer and one of the first things he did was to have a locomotive works built there. In 1857 the first locomotive was built at the works, 'Venus' a small 2-4-0 passenger loco.When the Taff Vale introduced the 0-6-2T type, which was to become ubiquitous across South Wales, the works traverser could not accommodate the longer wheelbase so locomotives had to have their trailing radial wheels removed while within the works.The works could only be accessed by level crossings accessed by turntables on the main line near the railway's terminus at Bute Road station.Shortage of space finally led Tom Hurry Riches, the railway's Locomotive Superintendent to suspend locomotive building by the company itself after the completion of the O1 class in 1897. However in 1903 a small steam engine unit for the company's first rail motor was built there, the carriage part being built at their Cathays Carriage and Wagon Works, however further rail motors were all built by outside contractors. After the Great War there were plans to build a new works at Radyr but as the company was to amalgamate with the Great Western Railway and other South Wales companies in 1922 that plan was abandoned and the Great Western subsequently concentrated all major locomotive repair work in South Wales at the former Rhymney Railway's Caerphilly Works. New workshops were constructed at Caerphilly and after their opening West Yard Works finally closed on 28 August 1926, the remaining workforce transferring to Caerphilly.One locomotive built at West Yard has survived, as the last standard gauge loco built in Wales. No 28, an O1 class 0-6-2T is now a part of the National Collection, currently under restoration at the Gwili Railway.

Mermaid Quay (Welsh: Cei'r Fôr-forwyn) is a waterfront shopping and leisure district in the Cardiff Bay area of Cardiff, Wales. The 14,000 m2 (150,000 sq ft) development was opened in 1999, and includes restaurants, bars, cafes and shops.
