Siege of Bohus Fortress (1676)

The siege of Bohus fortress (1678) was a siege by Dano–Norwegian troops during the Scanian War. The siege was endured by the Swedish defenders for weeks before forcing a Dano–Norwegian retreat.

The siege of Bohus Fortress occurred from 23 to 24 February during the Northern Seven Years' War between Denmark and Sweden. On 20 January, a Swedish army under the command of Klas Horn, Gustaf Olofsson Stenbock, and Klaus Fleming, was ordered to besiege Bohus Fortress by Erik XIV. On 22 February, the Swedish army arrived outside the fortress. The Danish garrison was commanded by Jens Holgersen Ulfstand, consisting of three Fähnlein and some marksmen. The Swedes demanded the Danes capitulate, threatening to kill every man, woman, and child if they refused. The demand was refused, and the Swedes began bombarding the fortress. However, the bombardment quickly ended, as hunger-typhus had broken out in the Swedish camp and morale began sinking. The Swedes withdrew back to Västergötland on 24 February.

Bohus Fortress (also known as Baahus or Båhus, originally: Bágahús) lies along the old Norwegian–Swedish border in Kungälv, Bohuslän, Sweden, north east from Hisingen where the Göta river splits into two branches (20 km (12 mi) north of Gothenburg). It commands the surrounding area from a cliff 40 m (130 ft) high, with the river forming a natural moat around it.

The bombardment of Bohus Fortress occurred from 13 to 18 August 1645 during the Torstenson War between Denmark–Norway and Sweden. Following Hannibal Sehested's departure from Bohus fortress on 13 August, a Swedish army led by Lars Kagg approached the fortress on the same day. The Swedes initially captured a redoubt at Fiskerholm, though they were repelled by Norwegian barges on the river soon after. At the same time, the Swedes built several artillery batteries on the Färjestad heights, using these to bombard Kungälv. Instead of helping the inhabitants of the town, the Bohus garrison plundered Kungälv and believed Kungälv's destruction would aid in the defense of Bohus. On 15 August, the Swedes attempted to burn six Norwegian ships. While the initial plan failed, as these ships sailed away, they instead attacked a ship from Hamburg. They seized the belongings of several inhabitants of Kungälv and thousands of rigsdaler, before abandoning and burning the ship following a Norwegian counterattack. On 16 August, a 24-hour ceasefire was called, followed by a 48-hour ceasefire on 18 August. Two days later, Kagg received news of the Treaty of Brömsebro and withdrew from the fortress in mid-September.

Skarpe Nord is an ice skating rink in Kungälv. It is the home of IFK Kungälv, Kareby IS, and Kungälvs SK. It is open to the public in the winter, when it is cold and there is ice on the rink.

On 4 March 1961, a mass shooting occurred at Thorild School in central Kungälv, Västra Götaland, Sweden, in which a gunman shot and killed one person, Per Håkan Altvall, and injured six others. It was the first reported school shooting in Sweden and one of the earliest in Europe. The memory of the murdered Per Håkan Altvall is kept alive in Kungälv via a stipend "awarded annually to one or a number of students known for good friendship and social support to students".

Surte Church (Swedish: Surte kyrka) is a church in Surte about 10 km (6.2 mi) north of Gothenburg, Sweden. It is part of Nödinge parish in the Diocese of Gothenburg.

Kungälv resecentrum is Kungälv's primary bus station, operated by Västtrafik. It serves as the city's main public transit link. The station is located just next to the E6 highway, connecting Kungälv to many other cities.The station underwent a major reconstruction at a cost of 50 million Swedish kronor. Construction started in 2016 and went on for about two years with opening ceremony on April 29, 2018. The 800 m2 station has a two-floor waiting hall, free wifi, and coffee shops.

Kungälv (Swedish pronunciation: [ˈkɵ̂ŋːɛlv]) is a city and the seat of Kungälv Municipality in Västra Götaland County, Sweden. It is also a part of Greater Gothenburg Metropolitan Area. It had 22,768 inhabitants in 2010. In 2021, the main Kungälv - Ytterby - Kareby conurbation had a combined population approaching 30,000.

It is the 50th largest municipality in Sweden by population size. The present municipality was formed in 1971 through the amalgamation of the City of Kungälv, the City of Marstrand and territories belonging to four rural municipalities. In 1974 a minor part (situated on the island of Hisingen) was transferred to Gothenburg Municipality.

Surte (Swedish pronunciation: [ˈsɵ̂ʈːɛ] ) is a locality situated in Ale Municipality, Västra Götaland County, Sweden. It had 5,798 inhabitants in 2010. Surte Church is located in the town. It is located some 15 kilometers north of Gothenburg. Surte became well known for its glass works that started production in 1862 and became one of the major mechanized glass works in Sweden. It was bought by PLM in 1960 and shut down in 1978. In Surte, there was a large landslide in 1950, which killed one person and destroyed 30 houses. More houses had to be removed, causing 450 people to lose their home. It also blocked the river which had frequent ship traffic. Surte was the hometown of Alexander Samuelson. Although he was not the designer, he was the man named on the 1915 design patent for the legendary contour Coca-Cola bottle.The international Grand Master of chess Gideon Ståhlberg, one of the world's strongest players in the 1940s, was born and is buried in Surte. Surte is home to the bandy club Surte BK. They built one of the first indoor bandy arenas in Sweden (and subsequently in the world), which was the first in Götaland.The village Bohus, located 2½ km (1½ mile) north of Surte centre, has grown together with Surte and, in official statistics, is handled as one village.
