Dodworth

Dodworth railway station serves the village of Dodworth, in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. The station is 2 miles 71 chains (4.6 km) west of Barnsley on the Penistone Line between Huddersfield and Sheffield.Originally its immediate next stations were at Silkstone and Summer Lane. Summer Lane was not reopened, and nowadays the next station eastwards is Barnsley.

Pogmoor is an area of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England. It is located to the west of the town centre, just north of junction 37 of the M1 motorway. As a centrally located suburb, situated close to the town centre, it is considered to be an affluent residential neighbourhood of Barnsley.

Originally used as landfill site for domestic waste, the land that is now known as Penny Pie Park is a large recreational playing field, open to the public .Now there is a large gyratory in most of the park. It is located in Pogmoor, Barnsley and is owned by the local council. The park is approximately 350 metres by 250 metres in size and is bordered by various vegetation, including sycamore, willow and horsechestnut trees. A railway separates its northern edge from another council field which is situated opposite. It contains multipurpose sports facilities and personal training fitness stations, as well as a vast area of green space, popular with runners and dog walkers. It is often used as a site for pigeon fanciers to race pigeons, and as a landing site for hot air balloons and air ambulances. Northern College is an adult residential college based at Wentworth Castle in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England.

Wentworth Castle is a grade-I listed country house, the former seat of the Earls of Strafford, at Stainborough, near Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England. It is now home to the Northern College for Residential and Community Education. An older house existed on the estate, then called Stainborough, when it was purchased by Thomas Wentworth, Baron Raby (later Earl of Strafford), in 1708. It was still called Stainborough in Jan Kip's engraved bird's-eye view of parterres and avenues, 1714, and in the first edition of Vitruvius Britannicus, 1715. The name was changed in 1731. The original name survives in the form of Stainborough Castle, a sham ruin constructed as a garden folly on the estate. The estate was in the care of the Wentworth Castle Heritage Trust from 2001 to June 2019 and was open to the public year-round seven days a week. Despite massive restoration, the castle gardens were closed to the public in 2017 amidst a funding crisis. In September 2018 it was announced that the National Trust planned to enter into a new partnership with Northern College and Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council to reopen the gardens and parkland to the public. The gardens and parkland reopened to the public on 8 June 2019.

Horizon Community College is a co-educational secondary school located in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England, on the A628. The school was formed in 2012 from a merger of Holgate School and The Kingstone School. The school relocated to a new campus with facilities for leisure, cultural activities and adult learning to be used by the local community. There is capacity, if needs be, to teach groups as large as 65, using classrooms with removable walls. Anne, Princess Royal visited the School on 4 July 2014 where she met the then local MP (Dan Jarvis), the executive principal (Nicholas Bowen) and a small selection of pupils.Previously a voluntary aided school administered by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, in June 2019 Horizon Community College converted to academy status. The school is now sponsored by the Hoyland Common Academy Trust. As of 2020, Nicholas Bowen is now the Executive Principal, Vice Chair of Barnsley College, and the Chair of the Barnsley Schools Alliance, working two days a week to support school improvement across the borough.

Kingstone School was a secondary school located in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. Founded in 1987, the school provided secondary education to pupils aged 11–16. It had a capacity of approximately 1,500, making it one of the largest schools in the area. In September 1987, Kingstone was formed by the amalgamation of Broadway Grammar School with adjacent Charter Comprehensive during the restructure of the British education system. In September 2012 it amalgamated with Holgate School to form Horizon Community College based at a new site on Dodworth road. The Kingstone School buildings were demolished in late 2012 to make way for a housing development.

There is a primary school, Gawber Primary School, a preschool, Gawber Pre-School, and a church, St Thomas.The origin of the place-name is from the Old English words galga and beorg meaning gallows hill and appears as Galgbergh in 1304.In A Topographical Dictionary of England (1848) Gawber is noted for its collieries. The North Gawber Colliery which closed in 1988 was located to the north in Mapplewell and the East Gawber Hall Colliery, of which the buried remains of the colliery fanhouse are a scheduled monument, was to the north-east of Gawber.

Kingstone is a small residential neighbourhood in Barnsley, located on the south-western side of Barnsley between Broadway and Park Road. Barnsley Central fire station and the recently demolished The Kingstone School are both located in the Kingstone area. The local St Edward the Confessor's church, built between 1900 and 1902 in the Gothic revival style, is a Grade II listed building.
