Shaw Lane is a cricket ground in Barnsley. It hosted one first-class match, in August 1862 between Yorkshire and an All England XI, a game won by the England XI despite being bowled out for just 47 in their first innings. More recently, it hosted four Benson and Hedges Cup one day matches featuring Yorkshire County Cricket Club between 1975 and 1978. Yorkshire beat Nottinghamshire CCC in 1975 but suffered one of their worst defeats when they lost by seven wickets to the Combined Universities the following year. The combined team did feature such future test players as Paul Parker, Vic Marks and Chris Tavare as well as Peter Roebuck. Yorkshire beat Essex CCC there in 1977 then lost to Surrey CCC by just one wicket in the last list A game held at the venue. In 2010, it was the location for a Women's ODI, the 4th ODI between England Women and New Zealand Women, which England Women won by 9 wickets.It has also hosted several Second XI and Minor Counties matches, and matches in the Yorkshire Premier League. It is the home of Barnsley Cricket Club, for whom such players as Geoff Boycott, Dickie Bird and chat show host Michael Parkinson opened the batting. It is one of twelve grounds in the initial 'Chance to Shine' scheme for grassroots cricket. It has been known as Shaw Lane since 1863 but before then was known as the Clarence Ground.

Kingstone School was a secondary school located in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. Founded in 1987, the school provided secondary education to pupils aged 11–16. It had a capacity of approximately 1,500, making it one of the largest schools in the area. In September 1987, Kingstone was formed by the amalgamation of Broadway Grammar School with adjacent Charter Comprehensive during the restructure of the British education system. In September 2012 it amalgamated with Holgate School to form Horizon Community College based at a new site on Dodworth road. The Kingstone School buildings were demolished in late 2012 to make way for a housing development.

Holgate School was a state school in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. It was closed in 2012, when it was merged with The Kingstone School to form Horizon Community College. After Holgate closed, it was demolished and the site was turned into a car park for Horizon Community College.

Locke Park is a 47-acre public open space and one of the largest outdoor green spaces in the Borough of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England.In 1861 Phoebe Locke, widow of railway pioneer Joseph Locke donated the park for the benefit of the people of Barnsley. Phoebe gave the original 17 acres, and the layout was undertaken by Locke's business partner, John Edward Errington. The park was extended in 1874, when Phoebe Locke's sister, Sarah McCreery donated a further 21 acres in memory of her sister, who had died in 1866. There were further donations and additions of land to bring the park up to its current 47 acres.The park is listed at Grade II on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England, being added in April 2001.

Horizon Community College is a co-educational secondary school located in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England, on the A628. The school was formed in 2012 from a merger of Holgate School and The Kingstone School. The school relocated to a new campus with facilities for leisure, cultural activities and adult learning to be used by the local community. There is capacity, if needs be, to teach groups as large as 65, using classrooms with removable walls. Anne, Princess Royal visited the School on 4 July 2014 where she met the then local MP (Dan Jarvis), the executive principal (Nicholas Bowen) and a small selection of pupils.Previously a voluntary aided school administered by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, in June 2019 Horizon Community College converted to academy status. The school is now sponsored by the Hoyland Common Academy Trust. As of 2020, Nicholas Bowen is now the Executive Principal, Vice Chair of Barnsley College, and the Chair of the Barnsley Schools Alliance, working two days a week to support school improvement across the borough.

Summer Lane railway station was a railway station on the Barnsley to Penistone line situated some 1 mile 16 chains (1.9 km) from Barnsley Exchange, South Yorkshire, England. The station was opened in 1854 by the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway and was closed between December 1859 and February 1867 when it was reopened.It was finally closed by British Railways on 29 June 1959 when the local passenger services were withdrawn from other stations on the lines in the area such as Barnsley Court House, Silkstone and Dodworth. In 1928 it was connected to a corn mill and jam factory.

Houndhill is a substantial Grade II listed Tudor Farmhouse (part timber-framed) in Worsbrough, near Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. The present house, which dates from the late 16th century with 17th-century additions, was originally built by Robert Elmhirst. His son Richard Elmhirst, who sided with the Royalists, constructed the fortifications in 1642 at the beginning of the English Civil War. It was extensively renovated in 1934. The house is built in ashlar, with a stone slate roof in two storeys to an H-shaped plan. The older wing is timber framed.

Holy Rood Church is a Roman Catholic Parish Church in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. It was opened in 1905. It is situated on the corner of Castlereagh Street and George Street, next to West Way in the town centre. It was designed by Edward Simpson and is a Grade II listed building.

Hope House School (HHS, formerly Barnsley Christian School) was a 4–16 mixed, Christian, private school in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. It was established in 1985 and closed on 27 April 2018. It was part of the Hope House Church.

Originally used as landfill site for domestic waste, the land that is now known as Penny Pie Park is a large recreational playing field, open to the public .Now there is a large gyratory in most of the park. It is located in Pogmoor, Barnsley and is owned by the local council. The park is approximately 350 metres by 250 metres in size and is bordered by various vegetation, including sycamore, willow and horsechestnut trees. A railway separates its northern edge from another council field which is situated opposite. It contains multipurpose sports facilities and personal training fitness stations, as well as a vast area of green space, popular with runners and dog walkers. It is often used as a site for pigeon fanciers to race pigeons, and as a landing site for hot air balloons and air ambulances. Wilthorpe is an area of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England. Bisected by the A635 Huddersfield Road, Wilthorpe has several small shops and an infant school, as well as an ATS garage and a dentist. Wilthorpe sits in the S75 area of Barnsley, along with the neighbouring districts of Pogmoor, Gawber, and Mapplewell. The village is popular among young professionals who commute to the cities of Leeds, Sheffield and Manchester.
