Tjøme (island)

Tjøme (Norwegian pronunciation: [ˈçø̀ːmə]) is a former municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. The 39-square-kilometre (15 sq mi) island municipality existed from 1838 until its dissolution in 2018. The area is now part of Færder Municipality. The administrative centre was the village of Tjøme. Other villages in Tjøme included Bjørnevåg, Grimestad, Hulebakk, Ormelet, Solvang, Sundene, and Svelvik.At the time of its dissolution in 2017, the 39.4-square-kilometre (15.2 sq mi) municipality was the 417th largest by area out of the 426 municipalities in Norway. Tjøme was the 212th most populous municipality in Norway with a population of 4,928. The municipality's population density was 125 inhabitants per square kilometre (320/sq mi) and its population had increased by 9.7% over the previous 10-year period.The whole municipality was made up of a group of islands located to the south of Nøtterøy Municipality. The municipality included all of the island of Tjøme plus the smaller islands of Hvasser, Brøtsø, Hui, and Sandø. In addition to this, there were also about 475 smaller islands and skerries. The main island of Tjøme is the second-largest island in Vestfold County.Tjøme was the childhood holiday destination for writer Roald Dahl.

The village is located in the central part of the island of Tjøme, about 20 kilometres (12 mi) south of the city of Tønsberg. The village of Bjørnevåg lies about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) to the south, the village of Ormelet lies about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) to the southeast, the village of Hulebakk lies about 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) to the east-northeast, the village of Grimestad lies about 2.5 kilometres (1.6 mi) to the north-northeast, and the village of Svelvik lies about 2.5 kilometres (1.6 mi) to the north. The 2.51-square-kilometre (620-acre) village has a population (2023) of 2,879 and a population density of 1,146 inhabitants per square kilometre (2,970/sq mi).Tjøme Church is located in the village centre. The village also has a library, grocery stores, gas station, schools, and other businesses. The village was the administrative centre of the old Tjøme Municipality which existed from 1838 until 2018 when it became part of Færder Municipality.

Tjøme Church (Norwegian: Tjøme kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Færder Municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. It is located in the village of Tjøme. It is the church for the Tjøme parish which is part of the Tønsberg domprosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Tunsberg. The stone and brick church was built in a long church design in 1867 using plans drawn up by the architect Anders Thorød. The church seats about 320 people.

The village is located on the island of Tjøme, about 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) to the north of the village of Tjøme, about 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) to the south of the village of Sundene, and about 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) to the west of the village of Grimestad. The village of Svelvik and the surrounding countryside had a population (in 2007) of 630.

Sundene is a village in Færder Municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. The village is located on the island of Tjøme, about 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) to the north of the village of Tjøme, about 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) to the north of the village of Svelvik, and about 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) to the northwest of the village of Grimestad. A bridge connects Sundene with the village of Kjøpmannskjær which lies about 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) to the northwest on the island of Nøtterøy. The village of Sundene and the surrounding countryside had a population (in 2007) of 345.

Mågerø is a small peninsula just south of the Norwegian city of Tønsberg. It is a part of the island Tjøme, a typically Norwegian summer vacation area. Mågerø is the location of the Royal Norwegian Air Force control and alert station for the southern part of Norway. The Norwegian royal family have their summer vacation facility situated on Mågerø, which in its entirety has restricted military area status.

The main visitors' centre for the park is located at Verdens Ende at the southern tip of the island of Tjøme.

Strengsdal is a village in Færder Municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. The village is located on the southern coast of the island of Nøtterøy. It lies about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) east of the village of Kjøpmannskjær and about 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) west of the village of Buerstad. The village of Torød and the Torød Church lie about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) to the northeast. The village of Strengsdal and the surrounding countryside has a population (in 2023) of 184.

Kjøpmannskjær is a village in Færder Municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. The village is located on the southern shore of the island of Nøtterøy, about 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) east of the village of Tenvik, about 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) north of the village of Sundene (on Tjøme island), and about 3.5 kilometres (2.2 mi) south of the village of Skjerve. The village of Strengsdal lies about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) to the east along the southern shore of the island. The 0.46-square-kilometre (110-acre) village has a population (2023) of 440 and a population density of 953 inhabitants per square kilometre (2,470/sq mi).

Buerstad is a village in Færder Municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. The village is located on the southern coast of the island of Nøtterøy. The village of Buerstad is located about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) to the east of the village of Strengsdal and about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) to the southwest of the village of Torød where the Torød Church is located. The village of Buerstad and the surrounding countryside has a population (in 2023) of 520.
