It covers an area of 2,233 acres (904 ha) and had a population of 303 in 115 households at the 2001 census, reducing to a population of 298 in 119 households at the 2011 Census. The villages name means 'North farm/settlement'. The village was held by the Subcourse family, possibly a corruption of 'Surlecors'. Its church, St Mary, is one of 124 existing round-tower churches in Norfolk. Norton Subcourse is mentioned in the Domesday Book as one of the settlements in Clavering hundred.

Thurlton is a small village in South Norfolk, located 14 miles (22 km) south-east of the city of Norwich, and 9 miles (15 km) west of the Suffolk coastal town of Lowestoft. The villages name means 'Thorferth's farm/settlement'. Thurlton is on the edge of the Broadland marshes to the south of the River Yare, and is bordered by Norton Subcourse to the west of the river. The population of the parish at the 2001 census was 720, increasing to 779 at the 2011 Census. The area around the village is mainly agricultural. Thurlton is home to the Great Goliath Mill, a brick built windmill. The village has basic amenities, including a pub, shop and post office. Thurlton Primary School has about 100 pupils, including a ‘classroom of the future’ extension, complete with a wind turbine.

On 13 March 2014, an AgustaWestland AW139 helicopter of Haughey Air crashed shortly after taking off at night in fog from Gillingham, Norfolk, United Kingdom, killing all four people on board. Among the victims was Edward Haughey, Baron Ballyedmond. The subsequent investigation concluded that the flight crew may have been subject to somatogravic illusion due to the lack of external visual cues, inducing them to manoeuvre the aircraft into the ground instead of climbing away.

Hardley Flood is a 49.8-hectare (123-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest near Loddon, between Norwich, Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. It is part of the Broadland Ramsar site and Special Protection Area, and The Broads Special Area of Conservation.This area of tidal lagoons and reedbeds provides a spillway for the River Chet. The reedbeds provide nesting sites for birds, including nationally important populations of several breeding birds. Three rare flies have been recorded, Elachiptera uniseta, Elachiptera scrobiculata and Lonchoptera scutellata.The site is open to the public.
