Grassmoor

Grassmoor, Hasland and Winsick is a civil parish within the North East Derbyshire district, which is in the county of Derbyshire, England. Named for local settlements, with a mix of a number of villages and hamlets amongst a semi-rural area, it had a population of 3,360 residents in 2011. The parish is 130 miles (210 km) north west of London, 20 miles (32 km) north of the county city of Derby, and 2 miles (3.2 km) south east of the nearest market town of Chesterfield. It shares a boundary with the borough of Chesterfield, along with the parishes of Calow, North Wingfield, Temple Normanton, Tupton as well as Wingerworth. The parish paradoxically does not include the majority of the nearby built-up suburb of Hasland which is now within an adjacent unparished area of Chesterfield.

Grassmoor railway station was on the outskirts of the village of Hasland and served Grassmoor, Derbyshire. It operated from 1893 until 1940. The station was on the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway which was amalgamated into the Great Central Chesterfield Loop which ran between Staveley Central and Heath Junction (just north of Heath railway station) on the Great Central Main Line.

The Five Pits Trail is a rail trail in Derbyshire, England. It consists of a network of surfaced walkways for recreational use. The approximately 5.5-mile-long (8.9 km) trail links Grassmoor to Tibshelf. The Trail can be extended to 7.5 miles (12.1 km) by continuing along the route to Williamthorpe Ponds and Holmewood. Derbyshire County Council created the Five Pits Trail in 1989, following the route of the former Great Central Railway which served the five main coal mines of Grassmoor, Williamthorpe, Holmewood, Pilsley and Tibshelf.Part of the trail (between Station Road, Pilsley, and Tibshelf) has been identified as the "Tom Hulatt Mile" and is marked at the side of the trail. This mile commemorates local runner Tom Hulatt who took place in the race that created the first four-minute mile.The Tibshelf end of the trail runs past Newton Ponds and joins the Silverhill Trail, which connects to the Brierley Forest Link Trail, and to Teversal Trail in Teversal. Access to the Five Pits Trail is possible via numerous footpaths which cross it and by a number of roads which cross it. There are car parks provided at several locations: Church Lane in Tibshelf, Station Road in Pilsley, Timber Lane near Astwith, and at both the Birkin Lane and the Mansfield Road entrances to Grassmoor Country Park.

Winsick is a hamlet in Derbyshire, England. It is located on the B6039 Mansfield Road, 2 miles south of Chesterfield. It is part of the civil parish of Grassmoor, Hasland and Winsick.

Tupton is a village and civil parish in North East Derbyshire, Derbyshire, England, 4.5 miles (7 km) south of Chesterfield. The population of the civil parish including Egstow and Old Tupton was at the 2011 Census 3,428. It lies just north of Clay Cross on the A61 (Derby Road) which runs from Chesterfield to Alfreton. It comprises the areas of Old Tupton and New Tupton. However, it is generally referred to as Tupton. A similarly named area, Tapton, is a few miles away, being part of Chesterfield. The village has a primary school, and a secondary school with a sixth form. Tupton also has two general stores, a post office, hair dresser, tanning studio, building supplies, tyre services, multiple garages, car repair centres, preschool nursery, three pubs, one club, a fish and chip shop, a nursing home, a coffee house and a pharmacy. Other settlements near the village are Wingerworth, Grassmoor and North Wingfield. A carnival called the Tupton Carnival is a yearly event held on a Saturday in July. This was first started in 2003 and has grown in size and attendance as the years have gone by. A young lady is elected Carnival Queen and travels through the village attended by the carnival princes and princesses and is followed by a procession of floats, bands, and fancy dress participants. The parade ends on the Primary school field for an afternoon of fun and live music, with stalls, displays, and various competitions. Tupton has also seen new development around Ankerbold Road, which runs on the outer edge of the village, close to North Wingfield. A large modern housing estate has been built around the Pond Lane proximity, as well as recent housing to the south. Tupton also has the Midland Main Line passing straight through it. At the bottom of Station New Road, there is a bridge crossing over the track into North Wingfield; this was the location of Clay Cross railway station. It is also known that Tupton has been a settlement since Anglo-Saxon times, as the historic Ryknield Street runs directly through the village. The locality was formerly known as "Topetune" and "Tuphome." Tupton is shown on the C. Smith New Map of Great Britain and Ireland in 1806 and on the first Ordnance Survey maps, Tupton Moor, Tupton Over Wood and Tupton Hall are shown.

Corbriggs is a small settlement in Derbyshire, England. The appropriate civil parish is called Grassmoor, Hasland and Winsick. It is beside the A617 road and is 2 kilometres (1 mi) southeast of Chesterfield.

Temple Normanton is a village and a civil parish in Derbyshire, England. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 490. It is in the North East Derbyshire district of the county. The village sits on a prominent hilltop three miles (5 km) south of Chesterfield. It is composed of two villages formerly known as North Normanton and Little Normanton. It is close to the villages of Heath, Holmewood, Grassmoor and the civil parish of Sutton cum Duckmanton. The Chesterfield suburb of Hasland is close by. The Manor of Normanton at the time of the Domesday Survey was in the hands of the King. Later, it passed to the Order of the Knights Templar from whom it derived its prefix 'Temple'. When the Knights Templar were dissolved in the early 14th century, the land and property of the village passed to the Order of the Hospital of St. John at Yeaveley Preceptory. Later, Henry VIII charged the Order of St. John with disloyalty, and it was dissolved. The village then passed to the hands of the crown. In 1846, Robert Arkwright was Lord of the Manor and principal owner. At the time the village had 500 acres (2.0 km2) of land, 29 houses and 132 inhabitants. In the Borough Library at Derby is held a parchment roll comprising 70 sheets stitched together. This records the proceedings of the Manor Court of Temple Normanton from 1447 to 1518. John Babbington is mentioned as a Knight of St. John, and many of the roads listed in the roll are still traceable on present day Ordnance Survey maps. Early in the industrial age the area became known for coal mining, with numerous collieries located in the vicinity. These included the massive Bonds Main Colliery which lasted from 1896 to 1949. The Chesterfield loop of the Great Central Railway also ran through the area, opened in June 1892. A Bonds Main Platform was provided for mine workers, but the nearest public station was located at Grassmoor and this closed in October 1940, the line itself closing to passenger traffic in March 1963. Sections remained for a while serving the various collieries but as these closed so the line disappeared completely. Modern Temple Normanton includes a primary school, a church, a cemetery and an MOT garage, but no shops. There are also regular buses to Chesterfield, Alfreton, Mansfield and Nottingham.

Clay Cross railway station was a railway station built by the North Midland Railway in 1840. It served the town of Clay Cross in Derbyshire, England. It was originally planned to have been built within the Clay Cross Tunnel, however it was clear that it would be impossible to ventilate it effectively, so instead it was built at the northern entrance - nearer to Tupton. The original station was the usual Francis Thompson Italianate design. The station was the site of a fatal accident on 19 May 1851 which left 2 people dead and 16 injured. The locomotive of a passenger train which left Derby at 9.05pm for Leeds suffered a broken pump-rod. The driver stopped near Clay Cross station to remove the broken part and the rear of his train was hit by a goods train and smashed into the last two carriages. At an inquest, the jury reached a verdict of manslaughter against the driver of the goods train, Samuel Stretton, but also condemned the railway company practice of allowing a goods train to follow a passenger train with a gap of only 5 minutes, the lack of a night signal man at Clay Cross, and the regular practice of allowing trains to stop at stations which were not intended in the timetable.The Erewash Valley line opened on 1 May 1862 and had its northernmost connection at Clay Cross.In 1877 the Midland Railway went out to tender for the rebuilding of the station. The alterations for the additional traffic resulting from the Erewash Valley Line were completed by January 1878. A link line from Clay Cross South Junction to Clay Cross North Junction comprised a double line each for goods and passenger traffic from the Sheffield junction at Tapton, north of Chesterfield, to the junction of the Erewash Valley branch south of Clay Cross. The station was rebuilt in the Midland Railway styles and the platforms were improved. An additional platform was added for the Erewash Valley trains. Three large platforms were opened, one outside the outer lines and a large on in the centre, connected by covered staircases and bridges so as to enable passengers to cross the line in safety. The station closed in 1967. There are no visible remains. However the goods shed still remains on the south side of the bridge. North of Clay Cross, there developed very busy coal sidings, particularly those serving the Avenue Coal Carbonisation Plant. A locomotive shed was built at Hasland in 1861 with at one time as many as sixty engines. In the 1960s it supported sixteen Garratt 2-6-0+0-6-2 locomotives used for the coal traffic from Yorkshire. The next station northwards was at Chesterfield.

North Wingfield is a large village and civil parish in the North East Derbyshire District in the county of Derbyshire, England. Located approximately 4½ miles south-east of Chesterfield, and 1 mile north-east of Clay Cross. The population of the civil parish as of the 2011 census was 6,505. It is in the North East Derbyshire district. The A6175 road from the M1 motorway to the A61 road runs through the village. The village contains the former hamlets of Hepthorne Lane, Hillyfields, Highfields and Church Hill. The Hepthorne Lane area is still called by its name by local residents, as are the Highfields and Church Hill areas. The River Rother flows through the village at the bottom of Hepthorne Lane, next to the Midland Main Line.

Hasland is a suburb in the south-east of Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England. Hasland is located south of Spital, east of Birdholme and north of Grassmoor. Hasland is a ward of the Borough of Chesterfield. The ward population at the 2011 Census was 6,969. The A617 (Hasland By-Pass) links Hasland, along with Chesterfield, to the M1. Historically a village, it expanded greatly during the 20th century and now forms part of Chesterfield itself. The expansion of Hasland has created a dense array of shops and services, including: a theatre, three schools, three churches, two medical centres and a couple of industrial buildings.
