McAllen Botanical Gardens

McAllen is the largest city in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States, and the 23rd-most populous city in Texas. It is located at the southern tip of the state in the Rio Grande Valley, on the Mexico–United States border. The city limits extend south to the Rio Grande, across from the Mexican city of Reynosa. McAllen is about 70 mi (110 km) west of the Gulf of Mexico. As of the 2020 census, McAllen's population was 142,210. It is the fifth-most populous metropolitan area (McAllen–Edinburg–Mission) in the state of Texas, and the binational Reynosa–McAllen metropolitan area counts a population of more than 1.5 million.From its settlement in 1904, the area around McAllen was largely rural and agricultural in character, but the latter half of the 20th century had steady growth, which has continued in the 21st century in the metropolitan area. The introduction of the maquiladora economy and the North American Free Trade Association led to an increase in cross-border trading with Mexico.

McAllen Stadium is a high school football stadium in McAllen, Texas, United States. It has been used for college and high school football and soccer games and track and field meets. The stadium contains a full track and full-color video scoreboard. It is owned and operated by McAllen Independent School District, and is the home stadium for the football teams from McAllen High School, James "Nikki" Rowe High School, and McAllen Memorial High School. Memorial Stadium is the largest stadium in the Rio Grande Valley.From 1981 to 1985, the stadium played host to the NCAA Division II Football Championship, known as the Palm Bowl during its five-year stay in McAllen. Lamar Academy is an alternative education school in McAllen, Texas. A part of the McAllen Independent School District, it includes an International Baccalaureate program and Options in Education High School. It is available to any student whose home school is either McAllen Memorial High School, McAllen High School, or James "Nikki" Rowe High School

McAllen High School is one of four high schools serving the McAllen, Texas area as a part of the McAllen Independent School District. It houses approximately 2200 students from grades 9–12. The school originally opened in 1909 and moved to its current location at 2021 La Vista Avenue in 1963. The school colors are purple and gold and the mascot is a bulldog. All athletic teams compete in the UIL Class 5A Division I

The M and J Nelson Building (also known as the J. C. Penney Building) is a building in downtown McAllen, Texas, that is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. It is a three-story reinforced concrete two-part commercial block building built between 1948 and 1950 for the J. C. Penney Company. It was built in Streamlined Moderne style, with horizontal bands of red and buff brick and cast stone trim, and with aluminum entrance doors and stair rails and two exterior display cases at its Chicago Avenue entrance.It was one of few buildings in McAllen having an elevator at the time it was built, and one of few with air conditioning.

Downtown McAllen is the main business district in McAllen, Texas. U.S. Interstate 2 runs directly south of the downtown area. The City's Central Business District and encompasses the area west of 10th street, east of Bicentennical, south of Hackberry and north of Interstate 2. This area thrives from over 250 retail businesses, the Federal building Bentsen tower, McAllen city Hall, the Mexican Consulate, the Honduran Consulate, the Guatemalan Consulate, Medical offices, banks, the City's Bus Terminal McAllen Central Station and the Downtown Parking Garage. It is estimated that 5,516,000 pedestrians visit the Central Business District. The two tallest towers in the area are the Chase Tower and the Bentsen Tower. 17th Street in Downtown is lined with many bars, pubs, lounges, restaurants, and music venues. It is also home to the historic Cine El Rey.

South Texas College (STC) is a public community college in the Rio Grande Valley region of South Texas. It is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award Bachelor of Applied Technology, Associate of Applied Science, Associate of Arts, and Associate of Science degrees. STC has an enrollment of approximately 31,000 students and a staff of 1,600 working across six campuses. It was created on September 1, 1993, with the passage of Texas Senate Bill 251, the purpose of which was to serve Hidalgo and Starr County.As defined by the Texas Legislature, the official service area of STC includes all of Hidalgo and Starr Counties.

McAllen Memorial High School is one of five high schools serving the McAllen, Texas area as a part of the McAllen Independent School District. It houses over 2,000 students from grades 9-12. Prior to the establishment of Memorial High School, the school and its building were originally opened and operated as Brown Middle School. The high school opened in 1980, at its current location, 101 East Hackberry Avenue McAllen, Texas, United States. The school colors are Columbia blue and bright gold and the mascot is a mustang. All athletic teams compete in the UIL District 30-6A.

The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) is a museum located in McAllen, Texas. It is dedicated to exhibiting Latin American art, as well as educating visitors about science. Its exhibits include antique stained glass, images from the Hubble Space Telescope, and the Discovery Pavilion, an educational children's exhibit. The museum also features a sculpture garden and a science playground. The museum's art collections include European art from the 16th to 19th centuries, Japanese prints, Modern art and folk art. The International Museum of Art & Science is a Smithsonian Affiliate and accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.

McAllen Public Library, or MPL, is the public library system serving McAllen, Texas, United States.

The Veteran's War Memorial of Texas was established on Veteran's Day, November 2013, to honor the 1.4 million Americans were killed or missing in action in all wars and conflicts of this nation. The Memorial site is located on a 3.5-acre (14,000 m2) complex in McAllen, Texas at the intersection of 29th and Galveston Streets and is encircled by 5 war sites: World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, The Gulf War & All Wars. The site has 160 granite panels with stories containing historical information on each war, its citizenships and events of that time as well as a statue known as "The Warrior" which commemorates the 3,440 Medal of Honor recipients in the United States Armed Forces

James "Nikki" Rowe High School is one of three high schools and the only T. E. A. recognized high school serving the McAllen, Texas area as a part of the McAllen Independent School District. It houses over 4,200 students from grades 9–12. The school originally opened in 1990, its current location is 2101 North Ware Road McAllen, Texas, United States. The school colors are green and gold and the mascot is the warrior. All athletic teams compete in the UIL District 30-6A.The school was named after James Nicholas "Nikki" Rowe (1938–1989), who was born in McAllen, Texas to Lee Delavan and Florence (Survillo) Rowe. He grew up in McAllen and graduated from McAllen High School in 1956 before leaving for the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. Rowe graduated from West Point in 1960 and became a United States Army officer and later one of only thirty-four American prisoners of war to escape captivity during the Vietnam War.Nikki Rowe High School was the newest addition to the McAllen Independent School District. Nikki Rowe High School was established in 1990 as a ninth grade center, and in 1992 became a class 5A high school. Rowe High School courses include: Advanced Placement, Honors Courses, College Preparatory Courses, and regular level courses. Nikki Rowe High School was the first in McAllen to establish the ACE program—A Chance to Excel. Rowe also offers the Quest program—a search for success, and Project Stay in School. In, 2010 Nikki Rowe High School was officially recognized by Texas Education Agency, for surpassing state mandate requirement as a 30 5A District campus.
