Downtown McAllen

The M and J Nelson Building (also known as the J. C. Penney Building) is a building in downtown McAllen, Texas, that is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. It is a three-story reinforced concrete two-part commercial block building built between 1948 and 1950 for the J. C. Penney Company. It was built in Streamlined Moderne style, with horizontal bands of red and buff brick and cast stone trim, and with aluminum entrance doors and stair rails and two exterior display cases at its Chicago Avenue entrance.It was one of few buildings in McAllen having an elevator at the time it was built, and one of few with air conditioning.

South Texas Health System Mcallen is a hospital in McAllen, Texas, United States. It is the flagship hospital of the South Texas Health System. It is owned by Universal Health Services, a Pennsylvania-based hospital management company.McAllen is a tertiary care regional provider. It offers advanced wound care, maternity care including a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), neurosurgery, comprehensive stroke unit, orthopedics, and oncology. It is the designated advanced Level II Trauma Center for Hidalgo County. Since 2011 it has been the base for emergency helicopter service throughout the Rio Grande Valley. In cooperation with the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, McAllen offers a three-year residency in Family Practice.In a 2015 peer-reviewed study ranking the United States' most expensive hospitals South Texas Health System, which owns hospitals including McAllen, was ranked as the 48th most expensive, charging roughly 9.2 times the amount procedures cost. This figure is disputed by STHS.

McAllen is the largest city in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States, and the 23rd-most populous city in Texas. It is located at the southern tip of the state in the Rio Grande Valley, on the Mexico–United States border. The city limits extend south to the Rio Grande, across from the Mexican city of Reynosa. McAllen is about 70 mi (110 km) west of the Gulf of Mexico. As of the 2020 census, McAllen's population was 142,210. It is the fifth-most populous metropolitan area (McAllen–Edinburg–Mission) in the state of Texas, and the binational Reynosa–McAllen metropolitan area counts a population of more than 1.5 million.From its settlement in 1904, the area around McAllen was largely rural and agricultural in character, but the latter half of the 20th century had steady growth, which has continued in the 21st century in the metropolitan area. The introduction of the maquiladora economy and the North American Free Trade Association led to an increase in cross-border trading with Mexico.

McAllen Nature Center (20 acres), formerly known as McAllen Botanical Gardens, is a city-operated nature preserve located in McAllen, Texas at 4101 West Business US 83. The site is between Ware and Bentsen Roads on the west side of McAllen, not far from the McAllen Convention Center. The gardens were established in 1962, with an emphasis on palms. The site is no longer maintained as a botanical garden but as a general nature site. The site contains three quarters of a mile of trails through pristine native thornscrub habitat with birding opportunities and It also has picnic areas.

McAllen Memorial High School is one of five high schools serving the McAllen, Texas area as a part of the McAllen Independent School District. It houses over 2,000 students from grades 9-12. Prior to the establishment of Memorial High School, the school and its building were originally opened and operated as Brown Middle School. The high school opened in 1980, at its current location, 101 East Hackberry Avenue McAllen, Texas, United States. The school colors are Columbia blue and bright gold and the mascot is a mustang. All athletic teams compete in the UIL District 30-6A.

The Veteran's War Memorial of Texas was established on Veteran's Day, November 2013, to honor the 1.4 million Americans were killed or missing in action in all wars and conflicts of this nation. The Memorial site is located on a 3.5-acre (14,000 m2) complex in McAllen, Texas at the intersection of 29th and Galveston Streets and is encircled by 5 war sites: World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, The Gulf War & All Wars. The site has 160 granite panels with stories containing historical information on each war, its citizenships and events of that time as well as a statue known as "The Warrior" which commemorates the 3,440 Medal of Honor recipients in the United States Armed Forces

It was the freestanding heart hospital in the United States The hospital provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient cardiac care, a 24-hour Emergency Center, General and Weight Loss Surgery programs. It serves McAllen and the surrounding communities in The Rio Grande Valley.

McAllen Stadium is a high school football stadium in McAllen, Texas, United States. It has been used for college and high school football and soccer games and track and field meets. The stadium contains a full track and full-color video scoreboard. It is owned and operated by McAllen Independent School District, and is the home stadium for the football teams from McAllen High School, James "Nikki" Rowe High School, and McAllen Memorial High School. Memorial Stadium is the largest stadium in the Rio Grande Valley.From 1981 to 1985, the stadium played host to the NCAA Division II Football Championship, known as the Palm Bowl during its five-year stay in McAllen. The McAllen Convention Center is a 174,000-square-foot (16,200 m2) multi-purpose convention center in McAllen, Texas, USA with a seating capacity of 3,500. Having opened in 2007, it hosts locals sporting events and concerts. It was home to the Continental Basketball Association's Rio Grande Valley Silverados, who played only one season in 2007-08 before leaving to become the Southeast Texas Mavericks.

South Texas College (STC) is a public community college in the Rio Grande Valley region of South Texas. It is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award Bachelor of Applied Technology, Associate of Applied Science, Associate of Arts, and Associate of Science degrees. STC has an enrollment of approximately 31,000 students and a staff of 1,600 working across six campuses. It was created on September 1, 1993, with the passage of Texas Senate Bill 251, the purpose of which was to serve Hidalgo and Starr County.As defined by the Texas Legislature, the official service area of STC includes all of Hidalgo and Starr Counties.
